What makes whisky so special?
Whisky, or whiskey as it is often spelled in Ireland and the US, is more than just a spirit; it is an invitation to explore history, culture and craftsmanship. The origins of whiskey date back centuries, with its production perfected by Christian monks who used the clear distillate for medicinal reasons. Today, whisky is a symbol of indulgence and style, produced in a variety of styles and flavor profiles ranging from smooth and oily to heavily peaty and smoky.

Isle of Jura 12 Years Single Malt Whisky 0.7L 40% Signature Range Series The 12 Years Single Malt is presented in a new guise in the already well-known Signature Range series. The series represents the company's special style. The 12-year-old can safely be classified above the 10-year-old and the Jura Journey with no age statement. This means that it appeals not only to beginners, but also to the odd whisky expert who wants to be inspired by the perfectly balanced aromas. At the beginning there are aromas of fine vanilla, toffee and malt and a subtle hint of pear. The peat smoke then becomes more apparent on the palate, along with notes of iodine, leather and a pinch of salt, although the whisky always appears very soft and non-alcoholic. The aroma of oak wood lingers more in the background, heralding the surprisingly long, soft finish characterized by light peat. Here, too, vanilla, malt and citrus accompany the palate before toasted oak wood takes over.

Aroma: intense with a malty aroma, fresh citrus notes. Taste: full-bodied whisky, fine honey notes with orange notes and green tea. Finish: long and smoky with a fine peppery spice.

The distillery has existed since 1832 and is valued for its high quality and authenticity. Today Glen Scotia is produced under the management of the Loch Lomond Distillery Co., which produces only around 100,000 l of Glen Scotia each year. Maturation and taste The name of the whisky does what it suggests: It exudes a harbor atmosphere! The Glen Scotia Campbeltown Harbour matures entirely in first-fill ex-bourbon casks, which give the whisky slightly fruity characteristics. There is also a sweet herbal aroma, as well as a certain saltiness and subtle influences of peat smoke and a mild sea breeze.

The Ileach Peated Islay Single Malt Whisky Cask Strength 0.7L 58% Islay through and through We warmly recommend this whisky to fans of strong peat smoke notes. However, the exact distillery behind this peaty whisky has not been fully disclosed. Some think they recognize a typical Lagavulin, but others see it more as a Caol Ila... In terms of taste, this ignorance gives The Ileach Islay Cask Strength even more 'character'; you perceive the aromas more intensely and perhaps not be able to recognize a specific distillery. All in all, however, this The Ileach (translated from Gaelic, this means 'citizen of Islay') reflects the typical Islay characteristics: clear and sometimes strong peat smoke notes combined with maritime overtones.

Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon 0.7L 47% Responsible distillery The American Heaven Hill distillery is behind the Elijah whiskey. It can be found in Louisville, Kentucky, where it has been the largest independent and family-run whiskey distillery in the entire USA for years. Elijah Craig This straight bourbon gets its name 'Elijah Craig' from a special key figure in American bourbon history, Reverend Elijah Craig, who in 1789 is said to have been the first person in spirits history to put the finished distillate into burnt oak barrels for the first time and store it there for some time. The Elijah Craig Small Batch Straight Bourbon is made up of both corn and rye whiskey. There is no longer an exact age, but it is known that the blend is made up of barrels that have been stored for between eight and twelve years. In terms of taste, you can look forward to a complex, soft and warming bourbon. Oak and nutmeg initially dominate the taste, but then give way to sweet vanilla and fruit notes as well as various spices. Sweet notes are also present for a long time in the long-lasting finish.

These are combined to create wonderful blends and often brought to market as limited editions. One of these outstanding products is the Highland Journey Blended Malt Whisky. The whiskies used for the blend matured partly in bourbon but also in sherry casks, creating a wonderful harmony between herbal and oak notes as well as sweet fruit notes. Tamnavullin Speyside Single Malt Whisky Double Cask 0.7L 40% Distillery anniversary It was not clear for a long time that the distillery would even have such a 'big' anniversary. The distillery, which was only built by Invergordon in 1966, had its difficulties right from the start. After it was taken over by Whyte & Mackay in 1994, they closed the distillery a good year later. At the turn of the century, production resumed briefly for a few months, but nothing major. It was only after the distillery was sold again and bought by a subsidiary of the Indian UB Group that whisky production began again in the same year it was bought, 2007. However, they rarely sold under their own name, and liter after liter went into various blends, including Mackinlay's. To mark the company's 50th anniversary, the Tamnavullin distillery from the village of the same name in Scotland has finally brought a new original bottling onto the market. This went through two maturation phases, the first in ex-bourbon barrels and the second in ex-sherry barrels, which gave it a strong amber color. The Double Cask has a lot to offer in terms of taste. Spicy notes such as cinnamon and cardamom, cloves and allspice, as well as notes of dark stone fruit such as plums. Light sweetness from malt and butter caramel. Sweet and spicy notes accompany the finish.

Glen Grant Single Malt Whisky Arboralis 0.7L 40% Arboralis Single Malt Whisky Arboralis refers to the old Victorian garden, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the Glen Grant distillery. The name is an allusion to this storage location, because translated it means something like 'light that shines through the trees'. In this old garden, the whisky is stored partly in bourbon and partly in sherry casks. This is married in a ratio of 9:1. In terms of taste, this new single malt whisky has a lot to offer. On the nose, it is initially fruity notes such as peach, banana and pear that pamper the senses. Honey and a hint of vanilla are also present. If you now take a small sip, an equally fruity bouquet develops. Here, however, there are other fruits that you can recognize. There are orange and apple, as well as peach with a hint of vanilla. Something reminiscent of tea hangs in the background. The finish is medium-long, with further notes, this time of a more spicy character.

Three different types of barrels were used for this 12-year-old malt whisky: Bourbon, sherry and freshly charred French oak barrels. All three contribute with their special properties to a harmonious taste experience - and that for a whisky that has been matured for such a short time. Isle of Jura The Sound Single Malt Whisky 1.0L 42.5% Isle of Jura Distillery The Isle of Jura Distillery is located on the Isle of Jura, an island that belongs to Scotland. Even before the distillery was 'officially' founded by Charles Mackinlay & Company in 1960, a distillery is said to have existed at the same location years earlier, around 1831. After a few changes of ownership, however, following disputes between the Ferguson family and the then owner of the land, the distillery was closed and all the equipment sold. It was only after the new building was built in 1960 and under the management of Charles Mackinlay & Company distilled whisky from the Isle of Jura for the first time in 1963. The Sound - Single Malt Whisky The single malt 'The Sound' is one of the special bottlings that are all geared to the special geographical conditions of the island. After there was already a The Road, which was dedicated to the unpaved road that leads directly to the distillery, there is now 'The Sound'. This reflects the character of the strait on the Gulf of Corryvreckan and the sound of the sea caused by stormy seas.

Glengoyne Single Malt Whisky 12 Years Time Keeper Set with Glass 0.7L 43% Glengoyne The Scottish Glengoyne whisky distillery also has a long history. It was founded in 1833 by a local farmer named Georg Connell. Initially, the illegal distillery was operated under the name 'Burnfoot Distillery' until it was finally given its current name 'Glengoyne' at the beginning of the 20th century. 12 Years Time Keeper Set with Glass 'Time is a gift' - is the company's advertising slogan for this great gift set. At the distillery, this refers both to the production process, for which people like to take their time, and to the enjoyment of the finished product. The 12-year maturation takes place in both bourbon and sherry casks in the traditional warehouses, which, unlike the distillery itself, are located in the Lowlands. These consist of moist clay soils, which create a special climate for storage. This means that a perfect balance between fresh notes and the typically soft character of the Glengoyne could be created over the maturation period.

Bushmills Steamship Collection No. 3 Char Bourbon Cask Reserve Triple Distilled Single Malt Whiskey 1.0L 40% Steamship Collection To celebrate the 125th anniversary of the famous steamship SS Bushmills, a special whisky series was launched in 2015. In order to obtain special spirits such as rum, bourbon whisky or others, the 1890 distillery used the opportunity to advertise them overseas with the SS Bushmills. To honor this diversity, each whisky in the Steamship Collection is given a different finish in different types of casks, including port wine casks, sherry casks or old rum casks. Bourbon casks were selected for maturation for the No. 3 Char Bourbon Cask Reserve Triple Distiller. The addition of No. In this case, 3 Char refers to the type or duration of the barrel being charred from the inside. No. 1 Char would be 15 seconds, No. 2 30 seconds and No. 3 takes 35 seconds to burn out. Whisky vs. whiskey: a look at the differences
The difference between "whisky" and "whiskey" is not just a matter of spelling, but also reflects deep-rooted traditions, production methods and geographical origin.
Geographical differences
Whisky: In Scotland, Canada, Japan and other parts of the world, the spirit is spelled without an 'e' as "whisky". This spelling is often associated with the Scottish tradition, which includes some of the oldest and most renowned whisky distilleries in the world.
Whiskey: In Ireland and the United States, however, the spirit is referred to as "whiskey". This form reflects the Gaelic roots of the drink and the different production styles cultivated in these countries.

- What is whisky?
-
Whisky is a distilled spirit made from fermented grain. Different types of grain such as barley, rye, corn or wheat can be used. Every whisky has to mature in barrels, which gives it its characteristic aromas and color.
- What is the typical alcohol content of whisky?
-
Whisky must have a minimum alcohol content of 40% vol. in order to be sold as such. However, some whiskies, particularly cask strength variants, can have significantly higher alcohol contents.
- When can a distillate be called whisky?
-
A distillate may only be called whisky if it has been matured in wooden casks for at least three years and one day. This minimum maturation period is required by law in most whisky-producing countries such as Scotland, Ireland and the USA.
- What is peated whisky?
-
Peated whisky takes its name from peat, which is used in the malting process to give the malt a smoky note. This smoky flavour is absorbed during the kilning of the malt and characterizes strongly peated whiskies.
- Why does whisky often have a smoky taste?
-
The smoky taste in some whiskies is created by burning peat, which is used to dry the malt. The smoke permeates the malt and later gives off this distinctive flavor during distillation and maturation.
- Which country produces the most whisky?
-
The USA is considered one of the largest whisky producers in the world, particularly through the production of bourbon and Tennessee whiskey. Scotland is also a leading producer, known for its wide range of single malt and blended whiskies.
- Which country has the most whisky distilleries?
-
Scotland has the highest density of whisky distilleries in the world, with over 130 active distilleries producing a wide range of whisky styles.
- What is the shelf life of whisky?
-
Whisky can last practically indefinitely as long as it is stored properly - cool, dark and with little temperature fluctuation. Once opened, it is ideal to consume the whisky within a few years to ensure the best quality.
- What does the term "single grain whisky" mean?
-
Single grain whisky refers to whisky produced in a single distillery from water and grain (not exclusively barley). It can be milder and less complex than malt whisky, but offers an elegant and often underrated drinking experience.
- What is a blended whisky?
-
A blended whisky is a mixture of different types of whisky, typically a combination of malt and grain whiskies. Blends are known to offer consistent flavor profiles that cover a wide range of aromas and complexities.
- Can whisky vary in color and taste?
-
Yes, whisky can have a wide range of hues, from clear gold to deep amber. These variations result from the type of cask used and the length of cask maturation. The taste of whisky can range from light and fruity to rich and peaty, depending on the method of production and the region.
- What is the difference between whisky and whiskey?
-
The spelling "whisky" is commonly used in Scotland, Canada and Japan, while "whiskey" is used in Ireland and the USA. This distinction is partly due to historical and geographical differences in production and style.
