What makes whisky so special?
Whisky, or whiskey as it is often spelled in Ireland and the US, is more than just a spirit; it is an invitation to explore history, culture and craftsmanship. The origins of whiskey date back centuries, with its production perfected by Christian monks who used the clear distillate for medicinal reasons. Today, whisky is a symbol of indulgence and style, produced in a variety of styles and flavor profiles ranging from smooth and oily to heavily peaty and smoky.

Neat, Over Ice or in Cocktails The bold character of Wild Turkey 101 Straight Bourbon Whiskey makes it highly versatile. Wild Turkey Longbranch 1.0L 43% Wild Turkey Distilling Company The Ripy brothers founded the Texan Ripy distillery in 1869 in Lawrenceburg Kentucky. They had their breakthrough a few years later at the Chicago World Fair in 1893, where they were allowed to represent the state of Kentucky with their whiskey. Their whiskey quickly became very well known beyond the borders of Kentucky. However, it did not receive its name 'Wild Turkey Whisky' until almost a century later. When distillery manager Thomas McCarthy was hunting with friends and toasted 'wild turkeys', the name 'Wild Turkey Bourbon' was born. Collaboration with film star In order to create a connection between the states of Texas and Hollywood, the distillery developed a special whiskey. With Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey, who has been the distillery's brand ambassador since 2016, a wonderfully smooth 8-year-old straight bourbon whiskey with a fruity, sweet character was created. The filtering certainly contributed to the special taste. Here, the whiskey was not only filtered through wooden hollows made from American soft oak, but also charcoal from the Texas sweet chestnut tree. The taste is very complex with sweet and fruity nuances and spicy, smoky, peppery notes on the finish.
Tenjaku Blended Whisky 0.7L 40% Japan Who hasn't seen the picturesque mountainous region around Mount Fuji in Japan? Tenjaku, not just the name of the whisky, but a town to the east of Kofu, in the Yamanashi region, is a very fertile land. High mountains and, above all, peach orchards and vineyards characterise the landscape. Tenjaku Blended Whisky A wonderful blend of single malt and grain whisky. After distillation, it is diluted with clear mountain spring water to a pleasant drinking strength of 40% vol. Light enjoyment, that is also what the label reflects. It depicts a sign of the harbinger of spring, Hibari, which in German best approximates the word Feldleche. The whisky should also reflect the freshness of spring and light enjoyment. The aroma has subtle smoky notes and a slight sweetness. On the palate, as expected, it is very mild and velvety soft. Vanilla, caramel and honey further refine the taste. Sweet fruit notes and oak notes round off the finish.

The Ileach Peated Islay Malt Whisky 0.7L 40% The Ileach Whisky The Scottish single malt whisky is a minor celebrity on the island of Islay. It takes its name from the Gaelic and is the name for an inhabitant of the island. For a very long time, the distillery's whisky was only available to buy on the island. Since 1999, however, we in Germany have also been lucky enough to be able to enjoy Islay whisky. It is produced by the Highlands & Islands Scotch Whisky Co. distillery and is a worthy representative of the island's taste. Unfortunately, we do not have an exact age, but one thing is clear: it is a strong, peaty, smoky whisky. In 2008, it even received a review from Jim Murray, who gave it 94 out of 100 points. On the nose, it is reminiscent of the rugged coasts of Islay and exudes smoky and peaty notes. On the palate, however, these are not quite as pronounced and are somewhat softened by fine spicy notes.

Jack Daniels Bottled in Bond 100 Proof Tennessee Whiskey 1.0L 50% 100 Proof Botteld in Bond The newest member and a limited release bottling of the Jack Daniels family was first bottled for the travel retail market, but is now also available elsewhere. This 'Botteld in Bond' is intended to commemorate the year 1897. At that time, the US government passed the so-called 'Botteld-in-Bond Act'. In the 19th century, whisky was not usually bottled, which meant that many shop owners who wanted to sell it added additives or diluted the whisky after purchasing it from the distilleries in order to make more profit. Jack Daniels was one of the first companies to start bottling whisky in 1895. This was to ensure that no one could subsequently change anything in the whisky. The Botteld in Bond Act set certain requirements for the whisky to ensure its quality. One of these was, for example, bottling as 100 proof (for us that means 50% vol.) or the whisky could only come from one distillery in order to receive the quality award. Taste of the new Jack Daniels It is a very rich and strong whisky with an intense character. When you open the bottle, a lush aroma exudes. Notes of dried fruit with cinnamon, caramelized sugar and the sweet note of almonds. If you then pour a sip into the glass and let it react with the air for a moment, a wonderfully fruity bouquet opens up. You can taste green apples and the aroma of baked bananas, a little sweet Canadian maple syrup and the spice of black pepper. The aftertaste is excellent with notes of oak and toffee, ending in a persistent, warming finish.
Glenalmond Highland Blended Malt Scotch Whisky 0.7L 40% Vintage Malt Whisky Co. After several years as export director of one of the best known Scottish whisky distilleries, Brian Crook founded what is now Vintage Malt Whisky Co. in 1992. Since its founding, the company's aim has been to make Scotland's best malt whiskies accessible to independent wine and spirits importers from all over the world. His idea was exactly the right path; today the company is one of the leading independent bottlers in Scotland. Glenalmond Highland Blended Malt Scotch Whisky In addition to typical whisky notes such as vanilla and caramel, the new addition to the Glenalmond distillery also surprises with aromas of malt and honey. On the palate, it surprises with fruity notes such as cherry. Due to the maturation in ex-bourbon and sherry casks, an undertone of spiced wood is always present.

Arran Single Malt Whisky Amarone Finish 0.7L 50% Scotland The Arran distillery comes from the Scottish Isle of Arran of the same name and is the only distillery there for over 150 years, as the Lagg Distillery was once located there from 1825 to 1837. Compared to many other whisky distilleries in Scotland, the Arran distillery is a relatively young one. It was only built in the early 1990s by Harold J. Currie, the former managing director of Seagram, and whisky was first produced in the mid-1990s. The distillery opened in 1997. Whisky from the distillery has therefore only been available on the market since 2001. Range You will often find single barrel bottlings of the brand that have undergone a special finish in different barrels such as sherry, cognac or rum. Amarone Finish Amarone is a special Italian red wine from the Veneto region. This is not a wine that you enjoy with food. An Amarone is a comparatively heavy wine, but still has a wealth of aromas. On the nose, fruity notes such as sweet and sour currants or raspberries paired with wood spices appear and develops into a soft, sweet whisky on the palate. Here, too, the memory of red fruits is strong. A light sweetness of honey and spicy aromas are also present. The creamy Amarone whisky fades slowly but powerfully with fruit and oak notes.

Aerstone Single Malt Whisky 10 Years Landcask 0.7L 40% William Grant & Sons William Grant & Sons has made a name for itself in recent years, particularly with the best-known whisky distilleries Glenfiddich and Balvenie. But the company's portfolio now also includes many smaller distilleries. One of these distilleries, which is now under the patronage of William Grant & Sons, is the Ailsa Bay Distillery. The Ailsa Bay Distillery can be found on the grounds of the Girvan Distillery. It is the youngest of all the distilleries in Scotland and was built in just nine months. They exclusively produce whisky for blends from William Grant & Sons here. Lowland Whisky If you compare the Aerstone 10 year old Land Cask with other representatives of the Lowlands, you have to clearly emphasize that this is one of the few representatives of smoky whisky from the Lowlands. This makes it the exact opposite of another product from Aerstone Whisky, namely the Sea Cask. This matured for 10 years in warehouses near the rugged Ayrshire coast and the Land Casks in the Lowlands. The aroma of the whisky matured in the country is between earthy peat smoke and sweet vanilla and candied orange notes. This is also reflected in the taste. A silky soft character that also surprises with salty caramel notes and a splash of fruity, fresh lime. A pleasant note of smoke paired with a not too intrusive fruity sweetness continues into the finish.

Jameson Triple Triple Irish Whiskey 1.0L 40% Jameson – branded whiskey since 1780 This year John Jameson developed a special method of producing whiskey. It was supposed to be particularly soft and mild. Over 200 years of daring, experience and passion are behind every Jameson bottle that leaves the distillery today. Triple Distilled As with every Jameson whiskey, the basis of this Triple Triple Whiskey is a blend of pot still malted and unmalted barley and grain whiskey, both of which are triple distilled and then matured for at least 4 years each. For the Triple Triple, the distillery adds another triple component on top. In this edition, the blend is not just matured in one type of barrel. Here, three are used again: sherry and bourbon as well as Malaga barrels. All contribute to a great overall picture with their own, unique aromas. However, the distillery does not give any precise information about the maturation time in the various barrels. All good things come in threes The overall impression of the Jameson Triple Triple Whiskey is definitely convincing. However, what is rather unusual for Jamson Whiskeys is the significantly fruitier character. The nose is reminiscent of wine, with a very berry accent, refined with citrus peel, cinnamon and cloves. On the palate, a sweet body, berries, raisins and a touch of spice. Here, too, the association with wine. The finish is also fruity and spicy and has a pleasant length.
Tobermory 12 Years Non Chill Filtered Single Malt Scotch Whisky 0.7L 46.3% Scottish Malt Distillery The Tobermory distillery is located on the Scottish island of Mull, takes its name from the island's capital of the same name, is the only distillery on the island and is also considered one of the oldest active distilleries in Scotland. It was founded in 1795 right next to the island's impressive waterfall. However, over the past few centuries it has been closed more often than it has been in operation. It has been owned by DCL since 1916. In the last century it was closed from 1930-1972, was then renovated and expanded to four stills and was also renamed 'Ledaig', under this name it was produced between 1972 and 1976. There were even two bottlings under this name. Up until 1993 there were numerous closures, bankruptcies and reopenings. Only with the sale to Burn Stewart did this back and forth come to an end. Since then the Tobermory distillery has produced smaller quantities, with only two stills and only uses little to no peated malt. In the past there was no clear line and so there were often very big (quality) differences. With the new owner there is now more clarity and two uniform lines: Ledaig Whisky & Tobermory Whisky. 12-year-old Non Chill Filtered Malt Whisky This bottling is a 12-year-old whisky from the rarities collection. With its colorful designs it is intended to be reminiscent of the colorful houses of the island's capital. The edition of the 12-year-old whisky was allowed to mature in Manzanilla barrels and is non-chill-filtered. This preserves an overwhelming abundance of aromas that reflect the spirit of the Isle of Mull. These aromas, which can be clearly perceived on the palate, include citrus notes, dried fruits, various finely balanced spices and creamy toffee notes. The finish also reveals a fruity, spicy, long-lasting bouquet.

The Legendary Silkie Irish Whiskey 0.7L 46% The myth lives on Like many whiskeys, rums, gins, etc., there is often something profound behind the name of the product. Be it a story about old sailors, tales from war or mythology. The Silkie blended Irish Whisky also uses one of these exciting creatures from old Irish or Scottish folklore. This great blended Irish whiskey is supposed to remind you of a mythological creature with its name and its 'irresistible' taste. According to stories, it lives in the water and resembles a seal there, but on land it transforms into 'irresistible' human-like creatures. 'Irresistible' is also the taste of this blended Irish whiskey, which was distilled and bottled for the Sliabh Liag Distillery - Donegal - Ireland. This is how a whiskey was designed that presents notes of fresh fruit on the nose. These include apricot and white grapes. Malt and honey as well as a floral note ensure a fresh whiskey. On the palate, this fruity part is accompanied by honey or syrup wafers, a little violet and a note reminiscent of perfume. The finish is rather short, a slightly bitter note with oak aroma comes through.

The Glenrothes Bourbon Cask Reserve 0.7L 40% Speyside Distillery Glenrothes, a Scottish malt distillery, is located in the 'Valley of the Rothes' (which is also what the company name means) between Craigella and Elgin in Speyside. It was founded in 1879. At that time, the distillery was founded by William Grant & Co., who is not to be confused with the founder of Glenfiddich. In the years after its founding, there were a few turbulent years for the whisky distillery. It was often hit by one fire or another and once burned down completely. However, these setbacks did not hold the company back and the distillery was continually rebuilt. It was worth it: The distillery's generally light whisky with its fine bouquet of berries, other fruits and carefully selected spices is among the best in all of Scotland. Here, whisky is divided into categories by master blenders. In this classification, the malt from Glenrothes is now among the top six and is therefore doing really well in the whisky business. Bourbon Cask Reserve This new release 'Bourbon Cask' is also known to experts as 'Alba Reserve'. However, in order to better emphasize the name of the type of cask used, it was renamed 'Bourbon Cask' and so it fits better into the cask series, which includes a sherry and a peated cask. Tasting Notes The aroma is floral and fresh with hints of vanilla and a few exotic notes. It is stored in ex-bourbon barrels made of American white oak, which primarily shape the taste profile. On the palate, as is well known, a very soft and light whisky, with a strong emphasis on vanilla. The aromas are accompanied by other fruit components of red berries. The finish is medium-long, but as expected, very soft and creamy with sweet notes

Penderyn Faraday Single Malt Welsh Whisky 0.7L 46% Penderyn The Penderyn whisky is a Welsh single malt from the Gwalia distillery. This has been operated by the Welsh Whiskey Company since September 2000. It is the only distillery in Wales, which, along with other factors, makes it very unique. The distillery also uses a very special distillation process, using the Faraday still which was specially made for Penderyn. Just three years after it opened, the first 'First Ever Single Malt Welsh Whiskey' was released. The first real presentation of the Penderyn single malt started with an all-star cast. As Prince of Wales, Prince Charles took on the task himself - you couldn't have found a better crew! The first bottling was sold out on the same day. The company was very lucky with this event and was able to quickly gain international recognition. The whisky The Penderyn Single Malt Whiskey is characterized above all by its purity and soft texture. In terms of taste, the Penderyn whisky offers primarily fruity aromas with an exciting spice and aroma due to the barrel maturation, which takes place here in bourbon and Madeira barrels.

Tomatin Single Malt Whisky 12 years 1.0L 43% Tomatin The Tomatin distillery is a Scottish distillery. Translated, its name means 'juniper book'. The whisky distillery can be found on the edge of the Grampian Mountains, where it was founded in 1897, during the peak whisky years. Like many other distilleries, however, the Tomatin distillery fell victim to the rapid end of the whisky boom. However, it reopened in 1909 and was greatly expanded between 1956 and 1962. The Tomatin distillery quickly became the largest in Scotland, with more than twelve million litres of alcohol. The tradition of whisky production was maintained despite its size, but a 'saviour in times of need' was needed. This was the Japanese interest group Takara Shuzp Co. and Okura and was the first intervention by a Japanese company in Scotland. Tomatin 12 YO Because of storage in traditional oak barrels, former bourbon barrels and former sherry barrels, the Tomatin 12 YO gets a very complex aroma. On the nose, a great combination of fruit and fine spices. Green apple, cinnamon, nutmeg and a subtle hint of milk chocolate are the defining features. On the palate, the Tomatin 12 YO is definitely clearer. Fruity notes are particularly prominent. Lemon and orange peel join in, followed by strong notes of spices and wood. The finish is surprisingly refreshing with citrus notes that are rounded off by fine roasted oak aromas.
Nikka Days Blended Whisky 0.7L 40% Japan The Nikka distillery is a Japanese whisky distillery based in Yoichi/Hokkaido. The path to this point was not easy - Teketsuru was already forty when he founded his distillery. Taketsuru came to Glasgow as a student in 1918, originally to learn more about brewing beer. Somehow, however, he was more fascinated by the art of whisky and so he continued his studies in this direction. When he returned to Japan, Taketsuru was hired by the second pioneer of Japanese whisky, Shinjiro, as production manager, where he contributed his experience for several years. In 1929, the two of them brought the first Japanese whisky onto the market. It wasn't long before they went their separate ways and Masataka Taketsuru founded his own distillery in 1934 and used it to ensure that whisky became increasingly well-known and popular in Japan. A good thirty years later, a second distillery, the Miyagikyo distillery, was founded. Nikka Days Blended Whisky Nikka Days Whisky is a fine blend of Coffey grain whisky and Miyagikyo single malt whiskies. It matures in bourbon barrels and thus gets its golden yellow color. The aroma of Nikka Blended Whisky is fruity to floral. Notes of orange blossom and pear can be detected on the nose. The taste also reveals sweet caramel and vanilla aromas. Together with a subtle spiciness and fine peat aroma, the components combine to create a true taste experience. A long finish of malty vanilla and apricot notes end in a beautiful aftertaste.

Deanston Single Malt Whisky 10 Years Bordeaux Red Wine Cask Finish 0.7L 46.3% A strong community There is a small community behind Deanston and it represents the people who have made the company what it is today. The actual history of the distillery, however, begins in 1785 with an old cotton mill that was opened on the banks of the River Teith by Richard Arkwright. During these years, agriculture changed to industrialisation and Arkwright later became one of the fathers of the industrial revolution. The company developed very well and the number of employees grew. In order not to lose them again, it was necessary to think of accommodation for new employees. This is how the idea came about to build a self-contained village. This has been preserved to this day and continues to form the centre of Deanston. It was not until 1965, when the cotton industry slowly declined, that the number of employees also gradually decreased. Instead of giving up the company altogether, it was also of great value for the community to start anew with a new craft! Deanston 10 YO Bordeaux Red Wine Cask Finish After the distillation process in 2006, the whisky was first matured for 8 years in ex-bourbon casks and then finished for two years in old red wine casks from Bordeaux. This whisky has a lot of volume, with strong sherry and alcohol notes on the nose. Deanston is known for the fresh honey sweetness in every whisky and this note can also be found in the 10 YO Bordeaux. Honey, caramel and sweet malt combine with red wine and a hint of citrus aroma. The aftertaste is a persistent fruity sweetness combined with a subtle spiciness.

Islay Storm Single Malt Scotch Whisky Limited Release 0.7L 40% Islay Whisky These special whiskies speak for themselves. They are characterised by peaty, smoky aromas and are particularly strong to powerful; you really have to like them. The Islay island is usually seen as a whisky region, but is also increasingly seen as an independent region, which is probably due to the abundance of distilleries and is absolutely justified, because the island is home to a total of seven distilleries (if you count Port Ellen, some buildings are still standing and you can still get their malt, there would be eight). The taste is of course debatable; if you compare Bunnahabhain Wiksy with Ardbeg, for example, there is a world of difference; one is more fruity and gentle and the other is very extreme in taste. In summary, all whiskies from the island have one thing in common: the distinctive smoky and peaty taste with phenolic and some call it medicinal tones. Unfortunately, we don't know much about Islay Storm Whisky, but it is probably distilled and bottled in Scotland and is a single malt scotch from an unknown Islay distillery. Taste of the Islay Storm Whisky Limited Release On the nose, there is mainly a peaty, smoky aroma. On the palate, a light, sweet peat note alternates with sea salt, vanilla and various spices. The finish is once again characterized by smoke, but leaves a pleasant mouthfeel.

Johnnie Walker The White Walker Blended Whisky 1.0L 41.7% Johnnie Walker – White Walker The idea behind Johnnie Walker White Walker was inspired by the world-famous series 'Game of Thrones'. In it, an army of White Walkers goes to war against the supposedly good guys in the series. A lot of effort has been put into the bottle design to put the fine blend in the spotlight even more: The highlight becomes apparent when you store the bottle in the freezer; the fine cracks in the ice grow larger and the most famous sentence from the series appears: 'Winter is Here'. This special edition was created by Johnnie Walker's small blending team in collaboration with George Harper. Taste of White Walker's In terms of taste, the Scotch is more on the berry side. Notes of vanilla harmonize perfectly with caramel, red berries and other fruits from the orchard. Johnnie Walker is a finely tuned blend from two of the northernmost distilleries in Scotland: the Cardhu and Clynelish distilleries. When selecting the distilleries, the blenders naturally had something special in mind. The two distilleries in the icy north have had to endure long Scottish winters, just like the 'Night Watch' in the Game of Thrones series. Enjoy Johnnie Walker White Walker neat and ice cold! If you want one of these coveted bottles in your collection, you should be quick, because the White Walker Edition is unfortunately only a limited edition!!!
Bowmore Single Malt Whisky 10 Years Dark and Intense 1.0L 40% Bowmore Distillery The first written mentions of the distillery date back to 1779, but if you believe some of the older generations of islanders, the distillery was already in operation in years before that. What is certain, however, is that the distillery was the first on the island of Islay and has one of the oldest maturation warehouses, the No. 1 Vaults. Whisky has been stored there for over 240 years. They are located right by the sea and some are even below sea level, which gives the Bowmore whiskies a salty toughness compared to other whiskies on the island. 10YO Dark & Intense Malt Whisky The storage in hogsheads and sherry casks from Spain gives the Dark and Intense their reddish, brown amber color. With its daring flavor combinations, the Bowmore Dark & Intense breaks all boundaries. The taste is intended to unite fire and earth and plays on precisely these two elements with spicy sherry tones and the typical Bowmore peat smoke. The nose delights with sun-ripened fruits, including Seville oranges and roasted maple wood. On the palate, dried grapes, a hint of sea salt and the oiliness of dark fruits. Notes of peaty walnut and a fine mixture of different spices also play a significant role.
Jameson Irish Whiskey Caskmates IPA Edition 1.0L 40% Jameson Whisky Jameson stands for Irish whiskey and an Irish company that is characterized by great tradition. The beginnings of the distillery are not that far away. The Jameson company has only existed in its current form since 1968. Before that, the history goes back a long way, to the year 1780. This is the official founding date. A Scotsman named John Jameson is named as the 'founding father'. He married the Stein's daughter and together they emigrated to Ireland in 1770. Their son took over the Bow Street distillery, while his brother William acquired the Marrowbone distillery. Both distilleries merged with the last remaining distilleries, Power and Cork Distilleries, to form IDG in 1966 and production was discontinued. The Irish Distillers Group opened in Midleton, Cork in 1975. It has been part of the Pernod Ricard Group since 1988. Jameson Caskmates IPA Edition Irish Whisky This new Jameson whisky primarily retains the soft characteristics that one is used to from a whisky of this brand. It has only been expanded to include a few aromas in the taste. These include coffee beans, cocoa, toffee and hops! The aromas on the nose and palate are really special. On the nose, first floral hops, some grapefruit and/or citrus notes rounded off by woody, nutty aromas. The full aromas then reveal themselves on the palate. The hops and citrus notes, which give the whisky a bit of freshness, can be clearly tasted. These are accompanied by spicy herbal tones. In the finish, the very present hops and fruit notes give way to a fine barley taste and make the aftertaste soft and persistent. This IPA whisky is best enjoyed neat, on the rocks or with a beer. For the really crazy, there are also 'beer cocktails' in which the IPA Caskmates works very well. One of these comes from Paul Thompson from the Ona Mor Bar in Cologne. His drink "Fassbruder" consists of the Jameson Caskmates, sugar syrup, lemon juice and beer. In summary, if you are a big fan of new, interesting beers in addition to whisky, then the Jameson Caskmates IPA Edition Irish Whisky is the right choice!
Mackmyra Expedition Swedish Single Malt Whisky 0.5L 46.10% Why is there no whisky from Sweden? That's exactly what the founders of Mackmyra thought and so they created the first Swedish distillery. The basis of this Scandinavian whisky is the purest water in the world, which has been perfectly filtered for centuries since the Ice Age. The barley used here develops its own unique, sweet aroma over the warm summer days. The barrels for storage are also made of regionally produced Swedish oak, which gives the whisky a stronger taste than American oak. Mackmyra Expedition Whisky celebrates the craft of whisky and the constant search for new inspiration. The company's philosophy: to produce whisky that takes buyers on a journey and lets them discover ingredients that would otherwise have remained unknown. Whisky is produced here according to old traditions, but in one of the most modern distilleries in the world. In addition, the company uses regional, Swedish ingredients and does not use additives, and production is geared towards sustainability, so that the work here is really very environmentally friendly. Cloudberry The cloudberry is a purely wild fruit and is actually quite rare in European regions. However, in Canada and the Scandinavian countries such as Sweden, Finland and especially Norway, it is a very popular berry. It is related to the rose family and raspberries. If eaten raw, they are sweet and tart at the same time and are therefore often made into jam or jelly, but are also used in the production of alcoholic beverages. Taste This whisky has a new variety of aromas. It has a fruity & spicy character. On the nose, spicy to smoky notes with vanilla and dried fruits/berries. Even if you don't know the taste of cloudberries, it is clearly expressed here. An unusual mixture of juniper, caramel, peat and the tart, fruity undertone of cloudberries. The finish is just as spicy and full of the aroma of the berries together with pleasant smokiness and notes of liquorice.

Whisky vs. whiskey: a look at the differences
The difference between "whisky" and "whiskey" is not just a matter of spelling, but also reflects deep-rooted traditions, production methods and geographical origin.
Geographical differences
Whisky: In Scotland, Canada, Japan and other parts of the world, the spirit is spelled without an 'e' as "whisky". This spelling is often associated with the Scottish tradition, which includes some of the oldest and most renowned whisky distilleries in the world.
Whiskey: In Ireland and the United States, however, the spirit is referred to as "whiskey". This form reflects the Gaelic roots of the drink and the different production styles cultivated in these countries.

- What is whisky?
-
Whisky is a distilled spirit made from fermented grain. Different types of grain such as barley, rye, corn or wheat can be used. Every whisky has to mature in barrels, which gives it its characteristic aromas and color.
- What is the typical alcohol content of whisky?
-
Whisky must have a minimum alcohol content of 40% vol. in order to be sold as such. However, some whiskies, particularly cask strength variants, can have significantly higher alcohol contents.
- When can a distillate be called whisky?
-
A distillate may only be called whisky if it has been matured in wooden casks for at least three years and one day. This minimum maturation period is required by law in most whisky-producing countries such as Scotland, Ireland and the USA.
- What is peated whisky?
-
Peated whisky takes its name from peat, which is used in the malting process to give the malt a smoky note. This smoky flavour is absorbed during the kilning of the malt and characterizes strongly peated whiskies.
- Why does whisky often have a smoky taste?
-
The smoky taste in some whiskies is created by burning peat, which is used to dry the malt. The smoke permeates the malt and later gives off this distinctive flavor during distillation and maturation.
- Which country produces the most whisky?
-
The USA is considered one of the largest whisky producers in the world, particularly through the production of bourbon and Tennessee whiskey. Scotland is also a leading producer, known for its wide range of single malt and blended whiskies.
- Which country has the most whisky distilleries?
-
Scotland has the highest density of whisky distilleries in the world, with over 130 active distilleries producing a wide range of whisky styles.
- What is the shelf life of whisky?
-
Whisky can last practically indefinitely as long as it is stored properly - cool, dark and with little temperature fluctuation. Once opened, it is ideal to consume the whisky within a few years to ensure the best quality.
- What does the term "single grain whisky" mean?
-
Single grain whisky refers to whisky produced in a single distillery from water and grain (not exclusively barley). It can be milder and less complex than malt whisky, but offers an elegant and often underrated drinking experience.
- What is a blended whisky?
-
A blended whisky is a mixture of different types of whisky, typically a combination of malt and grain whiskies. Blends are known to offer consistent flavor profiles that cover a wide range of aromas and complexities.
- Can whisky vary in color and taste?
-
Yes, whisky can have a wide range of hues, from clear gold to deep amber. These variations result from the type of cask used and the length of cask maturation. The taste of whisky can range from light and fruity to rich and peaty, depending on the method of production and the region.
- What is the difference between whisky and whiskey?
-
The spelling "whisky" is commonly used in Scotland, Canada and Japan, while "whiskey" is used in Ireland and the USA. This distinction is partly due to historical and geographical differences in production and style.
