Rye Whiskey – American Whiskey Based on Rye
Rye whiskey, or simply rye, is the most traditional of all American whiskey types and was originally produced by Irish and Scottish immigrants. Rye whiskey is made from at least 51% rye and has a spicier flavor than bourbon or Tennessee whiskey. The production process of rye whiskey differs from bourbon only in its base ingredients, but unlike bourbon, rye whiskey can also be produced outside the USA. For example, there is a Dutch rye made by the Zuidam distillery in the Netherlands. Well-known American producers include Thomas H. Handy, Sazerac, Prichard's, Hudson, and the High West Distillery. However, larger distilleries such as Jim Beam also produce their own rye whiskey, helping this often underrated whiskey type gain significance.
