It begins in 1987, when Thomas E. Bulleit fulfilled a lifelong dream and relaunched an old family recipe for a bourbon whiskey. He gave up his successful career as a lawyer and founded the Bulleit Distilling Company. The basic recipe for the whiskey comes from his great-great-grandfather Augustus Bulleit, who produced a bourbon whiskey with a high rye content in the 1830s-60s. Augustus Bulleit owned a tavern in Louisville, Kentucky and decided to produce his own, high-quality bourbon for his guests. After numerous small-scale experiments, he finally found a recipe that both he and his guests enjoyed extraordinarily. Unfortunately, his success was short-lived, as a few years later Augustus Bulleit disappeared while transporting several barrels of his bourbon whiskey from Kentucky to New Orleans. His fate remains unknown to this day, and the secret of this special bourbon was almost lost with him. The production of Bulleit Bourbon Bulleit is a so-called small batch whiskey, which means it is distilled and stored in relatively small batches. The mash used has a fairly high proportion of rye, which gives Bulleit Bourbon its unmistakable character. The water used is naturally filtered through limestone and, together with a specially bred yeast strain, gives the whiskey another unique selling point. The taste of Bulleit Bourbon Due to the high rye content, the amber-colored Bulleit Bourbon has a drier and more distinctive taste than other bourbons.
