A look at the history of rum
The history of rum is as rich and fascinating as the spirit itself. First mentioned in documents in the 17th century, rum has its roots in the Caribbean and South America, where sugar cane plantations and the resulting molasses provided the perfect basis for rum production. It is even said that the first rum-like drinks came with the sailors from South Asia. There it was called arrack, a drink made from pure palm juice or sugar cane. But it is impossible to say for sure.
At the time, Caribbean rum was more commonly known as rum bullion, a product made from boiled sugar cane. Rum quickly became popular not only with plantation workers, but also with pirates and sailors, which led to its spread and popularity in Europe.
Over the years, different regions developed their own unique methods of rum production, resulting in a remarkable variety of rum styles. Today, rum is appreciated worldwide and produced in many countries, with each style offering its own characteristic flavors and production methods.
At Drinkology, we honor the rich history and diversity of rum by offering a wide range of rums from around the world. Discover the fascinating world of rum with us and find your favorite.

Lazy Dodo Rum 0.7L 40% Lazy Dodo? A rum with the name Lazy Dodo sounds unusual for a rum at first. However, when you consider the origin of the Lazy Dodo Rum, it becomes clear why the connection is not so far-fetched. The Lazy Dodo Rum comes from the island of Mauritius. The island state in the southwest of the Indian Ocean is considered one of the best places in the world for growing sugar cane because of its humid and warm climate, as well as its topography and very fertile soil. The rums produced locally are of a correspondingly high quality and are popular and sought after by rum lovers around the world. The island's heraldic animal is the legendary dodo bird, which has been considered extinct since the end of the 17th century. The dodo was a flightless bird, around one meter tall, that fed mainly on fermented fruit, nested on the ground and was considered to be slow and comfortable. Since the dodo had no natural enemies, it was considered to be very trusting and had no escape or defense behavior. This made it easy prey for humans and introduced, feral pets. Even if it sounds a bit harsh, the dodo is considered a "prime example" of a species eradicated by humans and this rum wants to make a small contribution to remembering this. The Lazy Dodo Rum The Lazy Dodo Rum is produced on one of the most fascinating plantations in Mauritius. The property includes a botanical garden with gigantic dimensions of 37 hectares as well as seemingly endless sugar cane fields, which is why this plantation is considered one of the most important on the island. The molasses obtained from the sugar cane grown on site is naturally fermented and carefully distilled by a master distiller. The individual rums for the Lazy Dodo Rum are then aged for up to 12 years in various types of barrels. In addition to French oak barrels, new barrels made of American oak, former bourbon whiskey barrels and some barrels that previously contained sugar syrup are used. This gives the Lazy Dodo Rum a very special taste. The amber-colored rum impresses on the nose and palate with fresh and exotic notes. On the palate, in addition to a good structure, it shows additional nuances of caramel, vanilla and oak. The Lazy Dodo is suitable for drinking neat (on ice) as well as in cocktails.

Takamaka Bay Rum White Overproof, 0.7 L, 69% History and production of Takamaka White Overproof 69 Rum: Takamaka, the name already sounds like vacation. Inevitably, a picture of turquoise sea, palm trees and sandy beaches appears in the mind's eye. And indeed: Takamaka is a rum made in the Seychelles from freshly pressed sugar cane juice, which combines the culture and flair of the island state. The numerous islands of the Seychelles are located in the Indian Ocean, about 800 km east of the African mainland. Due to the great distance from continental landmasses, a unique flora and fauna has developed over the millennia, which also differs from island to island and ensures a great deal of diversity. The climate is warm and humid, the volcanic origin with its fertile soil offers ideal conditions for growing sugar cane. In 2001, the two local d'Offay brothers decided to use the sugar cane from their own plantations to make rum, and Takamaka was born. Since then, numerous creations based on fresh sugar cane juice have appeared. All Takamaka products therefore delight with a very typical note that can best be described as a combination of fruitiness, sweetness and a slight grassiness. The Takamaka portfolio shines with a fruity, fresh white rum, a full-bodied brown rum, a spiced rum and a pineapple and coconut rum - all available here in our shop. The latest product is the Takamaka White Overproof 69 Rum. This is the undiluted version of the popular Takamaka White Rum, which with its 69% ABV makes quite a racket on the tongue and is particularly predestined for targeted use in cocktails. Like the other Takamaka products, the Takamaka White Overproof 69 Rum comes in a completely revised design. The bright turquoise shines like the Indian Ocean that surrounds the Seychelles, but leaves enough room for an unobstructed view of the crystal-clear contents. Tasting the Takamaka White Overproof 69 Rum: The Takamaka White Overproof 69 Rum forms long streaks in the glass and appears extremely oily. The bouquet is characterized by a phenomenal abundance of aromas. In addition to tropical fruits such as bananas, pineapples and mangos, there are also pears, apples, sugar cane and raspberries. Surrounded by earth and grass tones, a fine spiciness and roasted peanuts emerge in the background. On the nose, the Takamaka White Overproof 69 Rum is the archetype of a Rhum Agricoles, i.e. a rum made from fresh sugar cane juice, with a complexity that cannot be found in any other white rum. With its strong 69% alcohol by volume, the Takamaka White Overproof 69 Rum represents the true face of the Seychelles on the tongue: straightforward, unvarnished, natural and with a pinch of Creole flair. When enjoyed neat, however, you should consider diluting it with a few drops of water. Otherwise, the taste buds will be faced with an almost impossible task. With its rough, direct character, the Takamaka White Overproof 69 Rum takes every rum cocktail to a higher level and provides the necessary kick of sugar cane and tropical fruits. The Takamaka White Overproof 69 Rum also cuts a fabulous figure in the Ti Punch. However, you should be careful to use it sparingly, otherwise the sheer power of the distillate will be difficult to tame.

Malteco Rum Selección 1987, 0.7L 40% History and production of the Malteco Seleccion 1987: The rum producer Ron Malteco has built up a veritable reputation in recent years. The product range extends from highly aromatic rums, which form a strong base in cocktails and mixed drinks, to exclusive, award-winning rarities that make the hearts of all aficionados beat faster. The Malteco Seleccion 1987 definitely belongs to the latter category. The limited special editions from the Selección series are all vintage rums that are produced according to an old Guatemalan recipe. The Malteco Seleccion 1987 is made from freshly pressed sugar cane juice and fermented with a specially bred, decades-old yeast strain that creates very characteristic ester notes. After distillation in column stills, the Malteco Seleccion 1987 was stored for more than 28 years in selected white oak barrels that previously contained the best Kentucky bourbon. That is a truly impressive age for a rum. The bottle itself impresses with its unique design. Golden, curved arches run from the top into the cap and form a visual symbiosis with the decorations. The stylized silhouette of a legendary bird immediately catches the eye. This is the quetzal, native to Central America (after which the currency in Guatemala is also named), whose meter-long tail and exciting appearance are the subject of numerous myths and stories. To complete the visual appearance, the Malteco Seleccion 1987 comes in an elaborately crafted wooden box decorated with a metal lock and fittings. On the front, the quetzal can be seen again in fiery red. Tasting the Malteco Seleccion 1987: The smell of the Malteco Seleccion 1987 surprises with a great combination of dark, heavy roasted and oak aromas and ester-rich tropical fruits. Bananas, mangos and papayas are accompanied by dark chocolate, roasted almonds, coffee beans and pastries. The fruitiness fades into the background over time and is replaced by sweet notes and oak. In addition, a light, earthy grassiness hovers over the remaining aromas. On the tongue, the Malteco Seleccion 1987 is extremely mild and velvety soft. The oily distillate gently caresses the taste buds and lingers on the palate for a long time. The taste is characterized by harmonious roasted aromas and pleasant sweetness. Burnt caramel, roasted hazelnuts, freshly brewed coffee and fine dark chocolate with a high cocoa content combine with vanilla, brown sugar and candied fruit, as well as freshly baked bread with a dark crust. The strong oak spice of the Malteco Seleccion 1987 is always present and forms the flavor backbone that forms the basis for the balanced taste impressions. There is also a delicate smoky note in the background, which extends into the long, warming finish and provides additional complexity. The Malteco Seleccion 1987 is an outstanding rum that is definitely unrivalled in its complexity and intensity of taste. An absolute must for rum fans.

Such a long maturation is extremely rare for rum and the few available examples are accordingly sought after. It seems almost impossible to find a more complex, better balanced rum. We have rarely seen such a beautiful bottle as the Malteco Seleccion 1986. The unique design impresses with a curved, golden band that runs towards the top and ends in the lid. The glass base is very solid and ensures a secure stand. In addition, each bottle is individually numbered. The Malteco Seleccion 1986 comes to your home in a beautifully crafted box made of dark wood. A metal fitting proudly presents the name and year of distillation of the rum. A lock in the same look also ensures that the box is not opened accidentally. On the front, a typical Guatemalan bird, the Quetzal, is illustrated as a 3D relief. The extremely elaborately designed packaging also visually underlines the outstanding taste and premium quality of this rum. This means that the Malteco Seleccion 1986 is sure to take one of the top places in your bar. Taste of the Malteco Seleccion 1986: The Malteco Seleccion 1986 lies heavy and dark in the glass. Highly viscous drops form on the edge, which demonstrate the high quality of the distillate. The smell is dominated by roasted aromas, coffee and noble bitter chocolate, which are rounded off by wonderfully sweet, well-dosed notes of vanilla, brown sugar, raisins and toffee. In the background there is a strong oak spice that skilfully combines all the aromas. On the tongue, the Malteco Seleccion 1986 is extremely creamy and mild, the mouthfeel is sensational. Once again, a variety of roasted notes come to the fore. These range from roasted almonds, hazelnuts and coffee to freshly baked rye bread and dark caramel. There are also dried fruits, orange marmalade and cloves. The spicy oak is also enhanced by a delicate smoky note. The finish is almost endless. As it dries over time, a delicate interplay of tobacco, dark chocolate and oak emerges. The Malteco Seleccion 1986 is truly an exceptional rum, with all the characteristics that aficianados appreciate. These include full-bodiedness, complexity, balanced at the same time and a wonderful aroma and flavor profile. A rum close to perfection.

Pusser's British Navy Rum Black Label Gunpowder proof, 0.7L 54.5% History and production of Pussers Black Label Gunpowder Proof: Pussers Rum has a long tradition that is closely linked to British seafaring. As payment and to boost morale, marines on board the Royal Navy were given a rum ration (called tot) every day at 12 noon sharp, which consisted of a total of 70 ml of rum with an alcohol content of 54.5% vol. Depending on military rank, the rum was handed out neat or diluted with water. The tradition of daily tots continued until July 31, 1970. As a result of scientific and medical findings, increased alcohol consumption was classified as hazardous to health and the rum ration on Royal Navy ships was declared to be over. Nine years later, Pussers Rum Ltd. was founded with the goal of bringing the Royal Navy's historic rum blend back to life and selling it worldwide. To do this, company founder Charles Tobias acquired the original recipe, which calls for a total of five different rums from the West Indies. Since then, authentic Navy rum with different alcohol strengths has been produced under the name Pusser's Rum. The name Pussers Rum was chosen in reference to the quartermaster responsible for serving the rum. He was casually called "pusser," which in turn is derived from the English word purser. To improve the clarity of the portfolio, the label design of the standard range was recently changed. The world-famous Pussers British Navy Rum with its 40% alcohol by volume comes in classic navy blue. The Navy Strength Rum with 54.5% alcohol by volume, which also previously had a blue label, is now marketed as Pussers Black Label Gunpowder Proof with a black and gold label to avoid confusion. The Pussers Black Label Gunpowder Proof owes its name to an interesting story. To check the alcohol content of their daily rum ration, the sailors of the Royal Navy mixed the rum they were given with gunpowder and set it on fire. Only when the mixture burned did the rum have the prescribed alcohol strength of 54.5% vol. Tasting the Pussers Black Label Gunpowder Proof: The Pussers Black Label Gunpowder Proof has a dark color reminiscent of amber. Due to the high viscosity, delicate streaks run down the glass wall. On the nose, the Pussers Black Label Gunpowder Proof presents a rich, pleasantly sweet bouquet. Intense aromas of vanilla and caramel, candied orange peel, toffee and tropical fruits create a wonderfully harmonious combination. A spicy oak note in the background, which is complemented by slightly bitter notes, provides additional complexity. The Pussers Black Label Gunpowder Proof is, as expected, strong and full-bodied at first. A whole range of different notes ensure a true explosion of flavor on the tongue. Once again on the sweet side, vanilla, caramel candies and gingerbread come to the fore. Christmas spices, especially cinnamon and cloves, as well as bananas, mangos and apricots create an enormous variety that nevertheless seems balanced. The exceptionally long, warming finish also reveals oak spices, tobacco and hints of leather. This makes the Pussers Black Label Gunpowder Proof an excellent rum, which, due to its intensity and aromatic strength, is ideal for all types of mixed drinks and cocktails, especially the world-famous Painkiller.

Vizcaya Rum Cask No. 21 VXOP 0.7L 40% History and production of Vizcaya Rum Cask No. 21 VXOP: The Vizcaya Rum Cask No. 21 VXOP is produced by the world-famous Oliver & Oliver company in the Dominican Republic. The family business was founded in Cuba by Juan Oliver in the 19th century. The War of Independence and the revolution forced the family to emigrate to the Dominican Republic and continue rum production there. However, they have retained the original Cuban production process for their products, such as Ron Cubaney or Opthimus. The Vizcaya Rum Cask No. 21 VXOP differs from the rums usually produced in the Dominican Republic in that it is made using fresh cane sugar juice rather than molasses. This gives it a fresh, extremely fruity bouquet. After distillation, the Vizcaya Rum Cask No. 21 VXOP is stored for up to 12 years in former bourbon barrels made of American white oak. As is usual with Oliver & Oliver, the complex Solera process is used for maturation. The Vizcaya Rum Cask No. 21 VXOP is bottled at 40% alcohol by volume and in a graceful, elegantly designed bottle with gold emblems and a solid base. Taste of the Vizcaya Rum Cask No. 21 VXOP: The Vizcaya Rum Cask No. 21 VXOP immediately shows delicate, mild aromas of chocolate, brown sugar, caramel and vanilla on the nose. After some time in the glass, a surprising fruitiness is added that you would not initially expect from a Dominican rum. Pineapple, green apples, bananas, apricots and red berries come to the fore and form a great counterpart to the initial, dark, heavy aromas. In terms of taste, the Vizcaya Rum Cask No. 21 VXOP presents an incredibly mild and gentle character. The mouthfeel is extremely oily and coats all the taste buds for a long time. Dark, intense notes of first-class chocolate with a high cocoa content, honey and freshly cut vanilla pods immediately create a holiday feeling. These are accompanied by more fruity nuances of pineapple, mango and papaya. The finish is long and warming, with hints of tobacco, coconut and Christmas spices. This highly complex and extremely harmonious interplay of fruitiness, spice and mild sweetness ensures that the Vizcaya Rum Cask No. 21 VXOP comes without reservation. The Vizcaya Rum Cask No. 21 VXOP is undoubtedly one of the best rums from the Dominican Republic and is an absolute must for all fans of full-bodied, pleasantly sweet and complex sipping rums.

Skipper Demerara Rum 0.7L 40% History and production of Skipper Demerara Rum: During colonial times, large areas of what is now Guyana were occupied by the Dutch. The colony was called Demerara at the time, after the Demerara River, which meanders through the entire country. This name is still in use today and can also be found in the form of Demerara sugar or Demerara rum. While Demerara sugar is a very special type of cane sugar that is characterized by a high molasses content and a dark brown color, Demerara rum is simply a designation of origin for all rums that come from Guyana. This also applies to Skipper Demerara Rum. Skipper Demerara Rum is a highly aromatic blend of a total of seven different molasses rums from the famous Diamond Distillery in Guyana. Matured for at least three years in oak barrels, it shows rich aromas of molasses and coffee as well as a powerful body. The Skipper Demerara Rum has been produced since the 1930s and remains true to itself to this day. Over all these years, the label design has been retained and neither the recipe nor the traditional production methods have been changed. This has ensured the inimitably full-bodied, intense taste that makes the Skipper Demerara Rum perfect for all types of rum cocktails. Tasting the Skipper Demerara Rum: The Skipper Demerara Rum has a dark brown, slightly reddish shimmering color that is reminiscent of fine mahogany wood. In the nosing, it shows beguiling aromas of molasses, vanilla, caramelized fruit, bananas, raisins, baked apples and gingerbread. In the background, hints of lime also suggest a light freshness. It is already clear that the Skipper Demerara Rum will play the aromatic main role in mixed drinks. This is ideal for Tiki cocktails. On the tongue, the Skipper Demerara Rum has a strong, intense start with a full body and rich notes of rock candy, vanilla, dark chocolate and coffee. Spicy oak, cinnamon, cloves and allspice round off the fabulous taste wonderfully. The Skipper Demerara Rum has a long finish that leaves a pleasant sweetness on the tongue and palate. Due to its full-bodied, characterful taste, the Skipper Demerara Rum is perfect for any type of cocktail that requires a solid rum base. Try the Skipper Demerara Rum in a Dark & Stormy or Rum Old Fashioned.

Old Monk XXX Black Rum 0.7L 37.5% Graceful shine The Old Monk XXX Black is a rum that is second to none and has a certain value among collectors. The graceful bottle contains a very long-aged rum from the Mohan Meakin Distillery, which is based in Ghaziabad, India. The employees of Mohan Meakin Ltd. take great care of the distillate throughout the entire production process, from the resurrection of the rum to bottling. In many steps, they act in the same way as their ancestors. In fact, the current representatives of the third generation still work in the company today. They have inherited the specialist knowledge and skills from their ancestors and are up to the challenge. This emotional matter of the heart makes it an obligation for the distillery to set an example for sustainability, integrity, tradition and craftsmanship. A real craft Over the decades, the company has adapted to modern times, but basic values that have always remained the same are still present. Each bottle of Old Monk Rum is handmade from start to finish. Therefore, it is a unique product, or rather, a one-of-a-kind, and its taste is also unmistakable! After distillation from molasses, the rum was placed in oak barrels to mature for at least a decade. Exotic, fruity! On the nose, the Old Monk XXX Black has a predominantly fruity, but not too sweet or spicy note. It has a typically Asian effect, which is probably due to the spices from Indian cuisine. The sweetness is even more evident in the taste, but the fruit and spice are not lost. The vanilla creates an apparently harmonious and round finish that you can rave about for a while. This Indian companion impresses down to the smallest detail and at an unbeatable price! For rum lovers who would like to enter the premium segment with a gentle drop. Enjoyed neat, the Old Monk XXX Black is an incredible firework!

La Belle Cabresse White Rhum 1.0L 50% The Blanc is the standard white rum from the La Cabresse company - other brands they make are La Cayennaise and La Coeur de Chauffe. Like all their rums, it's a column still product based on a 48-hour fermentation cycle of the fresh sugar cane juice harvested from their own fields, and it's bottled at 50% ABV. That's enough to give it some power without being too weak for a strong bar cocktail.

Old Monk Rum The Legend 1.0L 42.8% Old Monk - A Legend In the world of rum, "Old Monk" is one of the most famous bottlings and one of the best-selling rums in the world. Its origins surprise many, because Old Monk does not come from the Caribbean as some people assume, but from India, which is one of the world's largest alcohol-producing countries. Old Monk Rum is produced by Mohan Meakin Pvt. Ltd., which is a merger of several companies and whose history stretches back to the middle of the 19th century, when Scottish entrepreneur Edward Dyer built the Dyer Brewery in Kasauli in the Himalayas to supply his local countrymen with beer. Due to the high demand, Dyer built further breweries and the brewery in Kasauli was converted into a distillery. In 1887, another British entrepreneur - HG Meakin - set up breweries in India and after the First World War, the two companies merged as "Dyer Meakin Breweries", which Narendra Nath Mohan joined and the company thus received its current name Mohan Meakin Pvt. Ltd., whose main brands are Old Monk Rum and Golden Eagle Beer. Old Monk "The Legend" After the somewhat dry history behind the manufacturing company, we would now like to turn to the more exciting topic - rum. If you like the normal "Old Monk" rum, you will love the Old Monk "The Legend". The various rum distillates for this special bottling mature for at least 18 years in oak barrels, where they develop their full aroma and are then combined to form this blend. Bottled in the stylish monk's head bottle, the Old Monk "The Legend" is a highlight in every spirits collection and a great gift for lovers and collectors of good rum. This incomparable rum impresses with aromas of exotic spices such as cloves and cinnamon and subtle nuances of banana, butterscotch, sugar cane molasses and citrus fruits. The aftertaste is amazingly complex and leaves hints of oak and vanilla on the palate. In contrast to the classic Old Monk, we recommend not using "The Legend" as a mixed spirit, but enjoying it neat or "on the rocks".
Flor de Cana 25 Slow aged Rum 0.7L 40% Flor de Cana 'Flor de Cana' rum is a brand of the Compañia Licorera de Nicaragua, which was founded in 1890. The company is based in Managua, Nicaragua, although the distillery itself is located a few kilometers further northwest. As the rum is distilled from molasses here, there is direct access to the San Antonio sugar factory. Ultra Premium Rum The Flor de Cana 25 Slow aged rum is a 'slow aged' rum. For those who are not very familiar with rum, this says something about the particularly high quality and careful storage of the rum. The 25 Slow Aged in particular matured in specially selected oak barrels and the above-average storage time created a deep, dark amber tone. To further express the special nature of the Flor de Cana rum, it is interesting to know that this is the only rum to have received the 'Slow Aged' label from the US government agency. This guarantees that it is a truly natural maturation process and has not been artificially accelerated. In terms of taste, you can look forward to vanilla aromas, oak wood and dark chocolate with the Flor de Cana 25 slow aged. The palate is complemented by subtle fruit tones, almond and caramel, which continue into the long-lasting finish.

Austrian Empire Navy Rum Solera 18 Years 0.7L 40% History and Production of Austrian Empire Navy Rum Solera 18 The name Austrian Empire Navy Rum Solera 18 seems odd at first glance. What does Austria have to do with Navy Rum, and what does Solera actually mean? The answer is less complicated than you might think. But let's start at the beginning: Austrian Empire Navy Rum Solera 18 is bottled and sold by the Albert Michler Distillery in Bristol, England. However, this globally operating company originated in Buchsdorf, which at the time of its founding in 1863 belonged to Austrian Silesia. The Albert Michler Liqueur, Rum and Spirits Factory, as the company was then called, sold not only the world-famous Buchsdorfer herbal bitters but also numerous overseas rums, which were acquired in the Caribbean and subsequently transported to Silesia. The first part of the name thus refers to the origins of the Albert Michler Distillery in the Austrian Empire. From 1655 onwards, sailors in the Royal Navy received a quarter liter of rum twice a day as payment. This so-called *tot* was served by the purser and served to prevent mutinies and disinfect the water on board. This tradition was maintained for 300 years, although the quantities of rum were gradually reduced. The rums served were usually blends from different distilleries. The Austrian Empire Navy Rum Solera 18 is a blend of different Caribbean rums from the Dominican Republic, thus honoring the old tradition dating back to the time of the Royal Navy. The Austrian Empire Navy Rum Solera 18 is aged for at least 18 years in selected oak barrels using the elaborate Solera method. Rums of different ages are blended together throughout the entire maturation process to achieve a particularly complex aroma and a full-bodied flavor. The Master Blender combines the individual rums to achieve the desired flavor profile. This is extremely time-consuming and requires a great deal of experience and dedication. Taste of Austrian Empire Navy Rum Solera 18 The Austrian Empire Navy Rum Solera 18 has a wonderful aroma of ripe fruits. Bananas, mangoes, and oranges are predominant. These are complemented by notes of vanilla, caramel, raisins, and plums. The taste of the Austrian Empire Navy Rum Solera 18 is smooth and well-rounded, without any alcoholic burn. Sweet barrel aromas, especially toffee, candied apples, and cotton candy, are accompanied by bitter notes such as dark chocolate and coffee. The finish is long and lingering, with a robust oak spice and hints of tobacco. The Austrian Empire Navy Rum Solera 18 is an outstanding sipping rum with great strength and elegance that should bring much joy to every connoisseur.

Austrian Empire Navy Rum Reserva 1863, 0.7L 40% History and production of Austrian Empire Navy Rum Reserva 1863 Barbados is considered the cradle of rum. The tropical climate and fertile soil make the Caribbean island ideal for growing sugar cane. The actual sugar production also produces molasses, a thick, brown mass that still contains a lot of sugar and is the basic ingredient for rum distillation. English merchants discovered early on that, in addition to sugar cane cultivation, rum production in Barbados is a real gold mine and so many smaller distilleries were built on the island. The distillation of molasses rum is still firmly anchored in Barbados and fills Barbadians with great pride. The rums are mainly distilled in small pot stills and have a strong taste, with notes of molasses and caramel predominating. The name Austrian Empire Navy Rum Reserva 1863 0.7L 40% goes back to the Albert Michler liqueur, rum and spirit factory, which was founded in 1863 in Buchsdorf, Austria-Silesia. In addition to the world-famous Buchsdorfer Magenbitter, numerous overseas rums were also imported and sold. However, with the end of the Second World War, the spirits factory had to be closed. Today, Albert Michler Distillery Int. Ltd is based in Bristol in the south of England. The Austrian Empire Navy Rum Reserva 1863 impressively revives Albert Michler's legacy and history. The Austrian Empire Navy Rum Reserva 1863 is an assemblage of the finest Barbados rums that were allowed to mature in barrels made of American and French oak. It is a typical representative of Barbados rums and deserves to be tasted. Taste of the Austrian Empire Navy Rum Reserva 1863 The Austrian Empire Navy Rum Reserva 1863 presents itself as is typical for a Barbados rum. Lots of molasses, caramel and honey on the nose, with light hints of coconut and bananas. The taste is wonderfully soft and round with notes of tropical fruits, chocolate and vanilla. The strong oak spice is wonderfully integrated and provides additional complexity. By using different oak barrels, the sweet aromas such as vanilla, caramel and toffee are combined and harmoniously brought together with the tart, dry impressions of dark chocolate and coffee. The Austrian Empire Navy Rum Reserva 1863 ensures a velvety, viscous mouthfeel and a long-lasting finish. Honey, oak and tobacco are the predominant aromas in the finish. Black Jamaica Rum XO 0.7L 40% History and production of Black Jamaica Rum XO: Jamaica is inseparably linked to rum. This goes so far that even teetotalers have a bottle of the aromatic molasses distillate in the house - as a medicine to rub on for colds and general malaise. It is therefore not surprising that Jamaica is considered the country with the highest bar density in the world. But the intense, full-bodied rums with the strong ester aromas are appreciated not only on the Caribbean island itself, but worldwide. One of them is Black Jamaica Rum XO, which is distilled from molasses, a highly viscous, sweet by-product of sugar production. Subsequent storage for many years in oak barrels ensures a dark color, intense barrel aromas and rounds off the taste. The hot, humid climate of Jamaica accelerates and intensifies the maturation process. The Black Jamaica Rum XO is a blend of various individual rums, each of which has its own special aroma. By mixing these different rums, the master blender can create a unique taste that would never be possible in its complexity and fullness with a single cask bottling. However, it is of crucial importance to create a harmonious, balanced aroma and taste profile. This is only possible through many years of experience, talent and a good rum base. The Black Jamaica Rum XO impressively demonstrates the skills of the master blender with its combination of fruitiness, sweetness, herbal notes and spiciness. Taste of the Black Jamaica Rum XO: The deep dark color of the Black Jamaica Rum XO already gives an idea of the intense aroma this rum has. The typical Jamaican power flows out of the glass with full force. Bananas, candied oranges, sweet apples and dried fruit are present. This is accompanied by a complex combination of honey, vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, liquorice and allspice. In the background, tart notes of dark chocolate, tobacco and leather emerge. The Black Jamaica Rum XO shows its strong side in terms of taste, just as you would expect from a Jamaican. Intense notes of bananas, pears and ripe apples play the main role, along with orange peel, honey and toffee. Together with vanilla, Christmas spices, dark chocolate, oak and tobacco, the Black Jamaica Rum XO shows a good balance of fruitiness, sweetness and tart-spicy notes. The Black Jamaica Rum XO is incredibly fun in the glass. There are always new aromas and taste nuances to discover. The complexity and depth is really impressive and makes the Black Jamaica Rum XO an all-round successful sipping rum in Jamaican style.

The right rum for every taste
Rum is not just a drink, but a journey of discovery. With over 700 different types of rum, Drinkology offers an incomparable variety.
Types of rum: a world of flavors
Rum is a fascinatingly versatile spirit that comes in numerous styles and flavor profiles. Here at Drinkology, we make sure that every rum lover can find the rum that suits their taste. Let's take a closer look at the different types of rum:
White rum
White rum, also known as silver or light rum, is characterized by its clear color and mild taste. It is matured for a short time and often stored in stainless steel barrels to preserve its color. White rum is the perfect choice for cocktails such as mojitos and daiquiris, as it enhances the flavors of the other ingredients without dominating.
Golden rum
Golden rum, sometimes referred to as rum ambre, gets its characteristic color and richer flavor from aging in wooden barrels. These rums offer greater complexity and are versatile, both neat and in cocktails. Their aromas range from caramel and vanilla to spices and woody notes.
Dark rum
Dark rum is known for its deep color and intense taste. The long maturation in burnt barrels gives it notes of molasses, chocolate, spices and sometimes smoke. These rums are excellent for use in rich cocktails, for cooking and baking or for pure enjoyment.
Outdated rum
Over-aged rums, often referred to as XO or Extra Aged, are the jewels of the rum world. They spend many years, sometimes even decades, in barrels, allowing them to develop exceptional depth and complexity. These high-quality rums are best enjoyed neat or on the rocks to fully appreciate their subtle nuances.
Rhum Agricole
Rhum Agricole differs from other rums in that it is made from fresh sugar cane juice instead of molasses (dark brown sugar syrup). This gives it a fresher and often more complex aroma. Rhum Agricole is particularly popular in French Caribbean regions such as Martinique and Guadeloupe and offers a unique spectrum of flavor profiles, from grassy and floral to fruity and spicy.
Spiced rum
Spiced rum is becoming increasingly popular and is characterized by the addition of spices and sometimes caramel during the maturing process. These rums are rich in flavor and offer a wonderful balance of sweetness and spice, ideal for cocktails or to enjoy neat. Unfortunately, these rum blends can no longer be called rum. They are now better known as rum-based spirits.
Cachaça
Although not technically a rum, cachaça is often discussed in similar contexts. Produced in Brazil, cachaça is made from fresh sugar cane juice and is the base for the famous Caipirinha cocktail. Cachaça offers a spectrum of flavors that can range from light and fresh to rich and woody.
Rum from Around the World
From the Caribbean to the Old World, rum is produced with great dedication in many countries. At Drinkology, you can discover rums from traditional rum regions like Barbados, Cuba, and Jamaica, as well as hidden gems from Mauritius, Portugal, India, and even Germany. Each region brings its own style and tradition to rum production.
Caribbean: The Heart of the Rum World
The Caribbean is considered the cradle of rum, with a history dating back to the 17th century. Barbados, often referred to as the birthplace of rum, offers rums with rich complexity and a balanced flavor profile. Cuba is known for its light and aromatic rums, perfect for cocktails like the Mojito. Jamaica, on the other hand, produces bold and characterful rums with a high ester content, which are particularly popular among rum connoisseurs.
Mauritius: Exotic Flavors
Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean, has developed into an exciting new center of rum production. Here you will find rums flavored with exotic fruits and spices, giving them a unique and seductive aroma. Mauritian rum reflects the rich culture and diverse culinary traditions of the island.
Portugal: Madeira – Rum from the EU
When thinking of rum, products from the EU might not come to mind, but on the island of Madeira, which belongs to Portugal, some of the finest rum originates. The climatic conditions in Madeira are ideal for growing sugarcane, and thus Portugal has its own rum producers within the European Union.
India: A Rising Star
India may be a surprising addition to the list of rum producers for many, but the country has a long tradition of making sugarcane spirits. Indian rum is often rich and intense, with a distinct flavor profile influenced by the local quality of sugarcane and traditional distillation methods.
Germany: Tradition Meets Innovation
While Germany might not be known as a traditional rum nation, it does have an interesting history in rum refinement. The northern German region is particularly known for its rum blends, often used in the making of grog and other warm beverages. Today, German distilleries experiment with local ingredients and innovative production methods to create unique rums that blend tradition and modernity.
Production: From Molasses to Fine Spirit
Learn more about the fascinating process of rum production, from the cultivation of sugarcane to barrel aging. The quality of rum is significantly determined by fermentation, distillation, and aging.
Cultivation and Harvesting of Sugarcane
The journey of rum begins in the fields where sugarcane is grown. The quality and flavor of rum are heavily influenced by the quality of the sugarcane. There are also different sugarcane varieties depending on the geographical location and climatic conditions. After the harvest, the sugarcane is pressed to extract the sweet juice, which is either fermented directly or concentrated into molasses.
Fermentation: The Beginning of Alchemy
Fermentation is the process where sugar is converted into alcohol and carbon dioxide by yeast. This step is crucial for developing the characteristic flavor profile of rum. The duration and conditions of fermentation vary depending on the desired final product. Some producers add special yeast strains to enhance specific flavors.
Distillation: The Art of Purification
After fermentation, the resulting mash is distilled. Distillation separates the alcohol from water, yeast, and other impurities. There are two main methods of distillation: pot still distillation, which produces a fuller-bodied, more aromatic rum, and column still distillation, which yields a lighter, purer, and higher-proof spirit. Each method uniquely contributes to the distinctiveness of the rum.
Aging: Time and Wood Working Together
The freshly distilled rum is stored in barrels to mature. This phase imparts color to the rum and significantly contributes to its flavor profile. The type of wood, the pre-treatment of the barrels, and the climate of the storage location all influence the aging process. In tropical climates, rum ages faster than in temperate zones, leading to a more intense interaction between the rum and the barrel.
Blending: The Creation of Harmony
After aging, the rum often undergoes a blending process, where different rums are combined to create a final product with a balanced and rounded flavor profile. Blending is a highly esteemed art form that requires expertise and a delicate touch to achieve the desired flavors and consistency of the rum.
Bottling: The Final Touch
The finished rum is filtered and bottled. At Drinkology, we ensure that the high quality of our rum is maintained even in this final step. Every bottle of rum you purchase from us is the result of a meticulous and passionate production process.

The Influence of Aging
Aging in oak barrels is crucial for the development of the aroma and character of rum. Depending on the duration and type of barrels used, complex flavor profiles emerge, ranging from sweet and fruity to deep and spicy. This phase of the rum production process is a fascinating alchemy where time, wood, and climate work together to refine the rum and add depth.
Barrel Selection
The type of oak wood plays a significant role in aging. Many rum producers use barrels previously used for bourbon, sherry, or even wine. These barrels impart additional flavors and complexity to the rum. American white oak is known for its vanilla and caramel notes, while European oak tends to contribute richer tannins and darker fruit aromas.
Climate Influence
The climate in which the rum ages has a tremendous impact on the aging process. In tropical climates, common in many rum-producing regions, the higher temperature and humidity accelerate the interaction between the rum and the barrel. This leads to faster aging and more intense flavor development compared to cooler climates.
Interaction with the Barrel
During aging, the rum diffuses into and out of the wood, resulting in natural filtration and oxidation. This interaction contributes to the rum's coloration and imparts distinctive wood notes. Additionally, the "Angel's Share," the natural portion of rum lost through evaporation, can lead to further concentrated flavors.
The Role of Time
The aging time varies significantly—from a few years to several decades. During aging, rum undergoes a series of changes, losing its initial harshness and developing greater flavor depth. Long-aged rums are characterized by exceptional smoothness and complex aromas, making them a true delight. Ultimately, the master blender decides when the final product is good enough.
| Aging Time | Designation | Flavor Profile | Ideal For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-3 years | Young | Light, fresh, with notes of grass and green fruits | Cocktails and mixed drinks |
| 4-6 years | Mature | Balanced, with notes of vanilla, caramel, and tropical fruits | Both neat and in upscale cocktails |
| 7-10 years | Very Mature | Complex, with rich notes of dried fruits, spices, and wood | Neat or in high-end cocktails |
| 10-15 years | Old | Deep and intense, with nuances of leather, tobacco, and dark chocolate | Neat, to appreciate the depth of the rum |
| Over 15 years | Very Old | Exceptionally smooth and complex, with multi-layered flavors that only long aging can achieve | Collectors and connoisseurs, neat for meditative enjoyment |
Finishing Techniques
Some rums undergo an additional finishing process in special barrels to achieve further flavor dimensions. This finishing can take place in port, cognac, Madeira, or other specialized casks, adding extra layers of complexity and uniqueness to the rum.
