Ron Malteco – Rum from Guatemala

Ron Malteco is a rum from the Central American state of Guatemala. The history of rum in Guatemala is shorter than in some island states in the Caribbean, for example, but no less interesting. During the colonial period, Guatemala was primarily known as a coffee producer, so rum only played a minor role at that time. The first commercial distilleries were built in the last century, with the Licorera Guatemalteca, which was built in 1914, being one of the pioneers, while other well-known producers such as Euzkadi, Quezalteca and Zacapaneca only joined in the 1930s. As Guatemala was heavily dependent on agriculture and foreign currency earnings, the distilleries merged under the name Industria Licoreras de Guatemala, which enabled technical improvements and thus a significant increase in quality.

Even today, virtually every bottle of Guatemalan rum - like this Malteco Seleccion 1980 - comes from the Industria Licoreras de Guatemala house.

The Malteco Seleccion 1980

The Ron Malteco Seleccion 1980 is one of the house's most special and oldest rums. Rums in this age class are a rarity and are highly valued by connoisseurs and collectors. The Ron Malteco Seleccion 1980 was stored in American white oak barrels at an altitude of 2,300 m. The enormous altitude has a strong influence on the maturity and rums stored at this level develop different flavors than barrels stored at sea level. A good example of rum in this category is the Ron Zacapa 23 from the same house, stored in a double solera.

The taste of the Rum Malteco Seleccion 1980 is both balanced and complex, with fine notes of vanilla, molasses and oak on the nose and palate. The long aftertaste is underlined by spice and fruit notes and is accompanied by aromas of dried fruit such as raisins and dried apricots. Best enjoyed neat or at most on a little ice!
