Merlet Creme de Mure Liqueur, 0.7 L, 18% The history of Merlet The cognac and liqueur house Merlet can look back on an eventful history. It began in 1850, when the young Firmin Merlet decided to start producing cognac near Saint Sauvant. He owned a small still and, like most small producers at the time, sold his cognac to large cognac houses such as Hennessy. The subsequent generations of the Merlet family also remained true to the production of high-quality cognacs and their storage in oak barrels. The Merlets were able to build a good name for themselves in the industry until Gilles Merlet finally felt compelled to remove some of the vines due to their age in 1970. However, he did not replace them with new vines, but planted blackcurrants, which are also typical of the region. Although Gilles Merlet had no significant experience in fruit growing, the blackcurrants developed splendidly and just a few years later he was able to process them successfully for the first time. Merlet used them to create "Crème de Cassis Saintonge Boisée", the Merlet company's first liqueur. This was so well received by consumers that the company decided to produce more liqueurs. One of the most successful since then has been Merlet Creme de Mure Liqueur.
