Brandy - Brandy International
Brandy is the common generic term for brandies that do not originate from France or Germany and is the English word for brandy. In Germany, when people talk about brandy, they often mean the well-known brands from Spain and Italy such as Cardenal Mendoza, Antinori, Gran Duque de Alba or Veterano. In France, brandy is known as Cognac or Armagnac. Like brandy, cognac is a wine distillate made from white wine, but it may only bear the name cognac if the brandy comes from a specific region in France defined by law. If it does not come from this area, it is called Armagnac. In our online store for spirits, we offer cognac in the VS, VSOP and XO quality grades, as well as brandy in the Reserva, Gran Reserva, Solera Reserva and X.O. quality grades. Of course, you will also find a variety of different vintage bottlings - so-called Vintage Cognacs or Vintage Brandies. We also stock German brandies such as Asbach.

Ocucaje Mosto Verde Quebranta, 0.5L 42.5% Pisco - Peru or Chile? While Pisco still has outsider status in Germany, the clear distillate made from grape must is considered the absolute national drink in Chile and Peru. Each of the two countries proclaims to have invented its production and also claims the right to be the sole producer of Pisco. In Chile, only Chilean brandy can be sold under the name Pisco, and the situation in Peru is very similar. The fronts are hardened and the topic of Pisco is repeatedly the cause of legal disputes and arguments between the two countries. Of course, there is no clear and objective answer as to whether the best Pisco comes from Peru or Chile. Especially not when you look at the more than 400-year history. The fact is, however, that the long tradition and the immense passion for Pisco in both Chile and Peru creates outstanding products that are certainly unrivalled in their aroma and taste. Production of the Ocucaje Mosto Verde Quebranta: One of the leading brands in the field of Peruvian Pisco is Ocucaje. Only the best Pisco grapes are used for production; in the case of the Ocucaje Mosto Verde Quebranta, the famous Quebranta grapes are used. These are pressed and the must is then fermented. The name "Mosto Verde" signals that the fermentation is stopped prematurely and a certain amount of residual sweetness remains in the must. This gives a very characteristic taste profile. Furthermore, a special distillation process is prescribed for Peruvian Pisco, which has been perfected at Ocucaje. The fermented grape must is distilled only once and after three months of storage it goes straight into the bottle - without dilution. It is therefore of fundamental importance to use only the best part of the distillate. This requires a great deal of experience on the part of the distillers. It should also be noted that the Ocucaje Mosto Verde Quebranta, like all other Peruvian Piscos, is bottled without additives and comes to your home completely naturally. Many rum producers could certainly learn a thing or two from this. Tasting the Ocucaje Mosto Verde Quebranta: The Ocucaje Mosto Verde Quebranta is crystal clear and, thanks to its drinking strength of 42.5%, wonderfully oily and highly viscous. The nose presents a very characteristic aroma right from the start, which only the Quebranta grapes can provide. The direction is certainly comparable to good pomace, but a much more intense fruitiness emerges. There are also delicate muscatel notes and hints of dried wild berries. On the tongue, the Ocucaje Mosto Verde Quebranta is distinctly fruity and highly complex. The interplay of sweetness, fruit and piquant acidity is wonderfully harmonious. The tannin structure is restrained and very well integrated. The Ocucaje Mosto Verde Quebranta is a pleasure even on its own, but only reveals its true class in a traditional Pisco Sour.

Cles des Ducs Armagnac VSOP 0.7L 40% The history of Armagnac Armagnac is often ridiculed as the little brother of cognac, which supposedly cannot hold a candle to it in terms of quality. The fact is, however, that Armagnac is an independent product with outstanding quality and history that has nothing to hide from cognac. The history of this special French brandy begins in 1461 - that of cognac only in the 17th century. At that time, it was first mentioned in documents that a distillery in the Landes department was granted permission to produce brandy. This early art of spirits production goes back to three cultures. While the Romans brought winegrowing to the region, the Gauls provided suitable barrels and the Moors laid the foundation for the production of Armagnac with their knowledge of the art of distilling. The spirits from that time were still relatively inferior and were mainly used for medicinal purposes. However, the skills of the distillers improved from generation to generation and Armagnac became one of the most respected spirits in the world. With its good reputation, demand also increased. Armagnac was extremely popular, especially in the post-war period, which prompted some manufacturers to produce quantity rather than quality. What followed was severe damage to its image, which Armagnac is still struggling with today. However, the quality of the spirit has long since returned to its previous level. The production of Armagnac Another untruth about Armagnac is that it is just a cognac from another region. However, this statement is incorrect, as Armagnac is clearly different from its younger brother in terms of production. While cognac is double distilled in closed stills, Armagnac is simply distilled in a continuous process. The 55 - 56% raw spirit is then stored in barrels made from holm oak, which is typical for the region. This differs from the Limousin oak barrels used for storing cognac due to its high colorant and tannin content. The natural colorants from the wood give the spirits a beautiful amber color after just a short period of storage. The high tannin content gives young Armagnacs a pleasantly bitter taste. Clés des Ducs VSOP In the heart of Bas-Armagnac, the best of the three Armagnac regions, the traditional company Clés des Ducs produces the highest quality Armagnac. The VSOP is particularly popular. It is a blend of four to twelve year old distillates that have matured in 400 liter barrels made from the best holm oak. It is characterized by its particularly fine and floral bouquet and its slightly astringent taste. An absolutely high-quality VSOP that offers both price and performance!

Merlet VS Cognac 0.7L 40% History and production of Merlet VS Cognac: The history of the Merlet cognac house begins in 1850. The founder, Firmin Merlet, came from a family that owned large vineyards and had a thorough knowledge of the development and storage of fine wines. In the middle of the 19th century, Firmin decided to distill some of his wine and produce cognac. The cognacs were so aromatic and full-bodied that Merlet subsequently supplied all the major cognac houses with his fine brandy. The knowledge of the type of distillation and the complex maturation in oak barrels was passed on and expanded from generation to generation. In the 1970s, one of the descendants, Gilles Merlet, decided to grow blackcurrants on a large scale on the family's own land and to produce a cassis liqueur. The success of this liqueur overshadowed everything that had come before and made the company famous around the world. As a result, many different fruit liqueurs were produced alongside high-quality cognac. However, it was to be a while before Merlet brought cognac onto the market under its own name. One of the flagship products is Merlet VS Cognac. This cognac, which has been matured for a long time in Limousin oak barrels, impresses with its great fruit aroma and full-bodied taste. Whether as a high-quality base in cognac-based cocktails or as a stylish digestif, the Merlet VS Cognac always impresses. Tasting the Merlet VS Cognac: The Merlet VS Cognac shimmers honey-gold in the glass and impresses with its enormous fruit bouquet even before the first sip. There are aromatic notes of grapes, red berries, cherries and plums. There are also spicy hints of roasted nuts, almonds, cinnamon and oak, which combine harmoniously with the fruity character. On the tongue, the Merlet VS Cognac is full-bodied and balanced. The result is a rich interplay of fruitiness, sweetness and spicy barrel freight. Notes of vanilla, honey, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves emerge. There is also a whole potpourri of red, fully ripe fruits. The background is characterized by spicy oak and coffee. The long, warming finish lingers on the tongue and palate forever and forms a worthy conclusion. The Merlet VS Cognac is a remarkable cognac that really has all the facets that correspond to this noble spirit genre. A harmonious, finely balanced aroma and taste profile of mild fruitiness, pleasant sweetness and strong spiciness make the Merlet VS Cognac an absolutely exceptional product.

The Cognac House Dobbé The Cognac House Dobbé is a family-run business that has been owned by the owner family since 1787. Back then, the ancestors of the current managing director, Michel Dobbé, acquired the first vineyards in the Charente and distilled their first cognac a few years later. The Cognac House is located in the small town of Salignac sur Charente, which is very close to the famous town of Cognac. The Dobbé family now cultivates a good 35 hectares of vineyards. While a third of these vineyards are in the Cognac region of Fins Bois, the remaining two thirds of the grapes are grown in the famous "Petite Champagne" region. The vineyards are mostly planted with the Ugni Blanc grape variety, which produces very fruity, fine and complex cognacs. In order to achieve the best possible result, a large part of the work in the vineyard is done by hand and bad or rotten harvests are meticulously sorted out. After the grapes have been gently pressed, the resulting grape must is fermented. This produces a typical, rather acidic base wine, which is then double distilled in the traditional way in 25 hectoliter Charentais stills. The still young distillate is then filled into barrels made of Limousine oak to mature and taken to the Dobbé cellars for storage. The cognac matures there until the long-standing cellar master considers the quality to be perfect and releases the cognac for bottling. Bottling also takes place on site at the estate. This gives the Dobbé family the opportunity to observe every important step in the production of their cognacs first hand. The Dobbé Cognac Petit Champagne 10 years For ten long years, this exclusive cognac was allowed to mature to perfection in the house's cellars. Only grapes from the renowned Petite Champagne were used to produce it, which give this cognac its unmistakable character. On the nose, the cognac, which is bottled at a strong 43% vol., shows aromas of dried fruit, nuts and a hint of flowers and black berries such as blackberries. On the palate, nuances of vanilla, caramel and jam join the aromas from the smell. The long aftertaste is very balanced, harmonious and warming. A great cognac!

Cardenal Mendoza Solera Gran Reserva 0.7 L 40% The history of Cardenal Mendoza Brandy The noble Cardenal Mendoza brandy comes from the Andalusian town of Jerez de la Frontera, which is known worldwide as the home of sherry and for high-quality Spanish brandy. The Cardenal Mendoza Gran Reserva is produced there by the Sanchez Romate house using traditional manufacturing processes. As early as the 18th century, Jerez de la Frontera was a thriving trading town and attracted business people from all over the world. Back then, in 1781 to be precise, the Spanish entrepreneur Juan Sánchez de la Torre was drawn to Jerez de la Frontera where he laid the foundation stone for today's Sánchez Romate Hermanos company. Sánchez Romate Hermanos is still one of the few manufacturing companies in the city that has remained locally owned. While the company initially operated purely as a trading company, in 1887 the fourth generation of the Sánchez Romate family decided to produce a private brandy for the family and their closest friends - this was the birth of the Cardenal Mendoza Gran Reserva! Due to the excellent taste of this private brandy, the family business decided to sell it as well. The success of the brandy and sherries from Sánchez Romate was enormous. In 1909 the company was declared the official supplier to the British House of Lords and in 1917 the official supplier to the Pope. Sánchez Romate Hermanos is now a global company whose products can be found on all five continents. The Cardenal Mendoza Gran Reserva This special Gran Reserva Brandy is made from the best distillates, which mature according to the traditional Solera-Criadera process. The oak barrels used in the Solera were previously filled with Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez Sherry, which gives the finished brandy a very special taste. The mahogany-colored Solera Gran Reserva Brandy has a very fruity, winey smell and shows fine aromas of plums, raisins, vanilla and orange on the palate. The aftertaste is medium-length and very rich. A complex and balanced brandy that is suitable for many occasions!

Osborne Solera 103 1.0L 30% The beginnings of Osborne The history of Osborne can be traced back to 1772. At that time, the English merchant Thomas Osborne Mann moved from Exeter (Devon, England) to Cadiz. Thomas quickly gained a foothold in the regional wine business. This was facilitated by contacts with Sir James Duff and his nephew William Gordon, who together owned several wineries. After the death of Thomas Osborne, his two sons Tomás and Juan Nicolás took over the business. Juan Nicolás also joined the diplomatic corps and received the title "Conde de Osborne". The company's best bottles are still sold today under the "Conde de Osborne" brand. The company was continued by the Osborne family through the next generations and Osborne spirits became increasingly popular with connoisseurs. Osborne's rise to the top of the world's brandies Osborne brandies achieved their big breakthrough on the domestic market between 1935 and 1972. This was achieved through an expansion of the product range and large-scale marketing campaigns, which reached their peak in the 1960s with television commercials. Furthermore, bull silhouettes up to 14 m high (the so-called Osborne bull), which were placed on Spanish motorways, made the brand world famous.
