Aquavit - Aromatic caraway spirits such as Aalborg, Linie & Co.

Aquavit (or Akvavit) is considered a national drink in Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway. Its popularity in the Scandinavian countries is comparable to that of whisky in Scotland. The name aquavit is derived from the Latin aqua vitae (“water of life”). The original name of the whisky (“uisce beatha”) has the same meaning, but is derived from the Gaelic. Neutral alcohol serves as the basis for aquavit, which is distilled again with herbs and spices such as caraway, dill, star anise and fennel. The taste of aquavit is similar to that of German Kümmel (caraway schnapps) and it is typically enjoyed iced after a meal. Well-known aquavit brands include Linie, Aalborg, Bommerlunder and Malteserkreuz.
