Grappa - Exclusive grape marc spirit from Italy
Grappa is the Italian name for grape marc spirit. In other words, a spirit distilled from fermented grape marc. In recent years, grappa has evolved from a farmer's brandy to a luxury spirit that no bar should be without. The Italian grappa distilleries Antinori and Nonino are particularly responsible for this change in image. The freshness and quality of the marc and careful distillation are important for a good grappa. Most grappas (Italian: grappe) are bottled fresh after distillation as clear brandy. However, there are also barrel-aged grappas that take on a slightly golden color. Another specialty are single-varietal grappas, i.e. grappas distilled from a single grape variety such as Merlot or Chardonnay. If such a grappa is well distilled, the grape variety characteristics can be easily recognized.
