What is Aquavit?

Basically, an aquavit is a 'pharmaceutical' term for brandy/spirit. In Scandinavian countries such as Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway, aquavit was already mentioned in records in the early 16th century and is more or less THE national drink there. However, there are small differences in the production process between countries: for example, in Sweden, aquavit is made from grain, whereas in Norway and Denmark, potatoes or grain are used as the basic ingredient. There are also subdivisions within the countries into light and dark aquavit. Light aquavit is more typical for Denmark and only matures for 3-6 months in oak barrels. The dark aquavit mostly comes from Norway, where it is often stored in different barrels for several years, which is then reflected in the color and in a stronger taste.

Arvesolvet Aquavit

This super-premium aquavit comes from Norway, from the Det Norske distillery. After distillation, this aquavit was allowed to mature in fresh Oloroso sherry barrels.

Despite the clear caraway flavor, this is not too overwhelming and one does not perceive it as too intense, probably because the maturation in the Oloroso sherry barrel also means that fine, sweet oak aromas are clearly recognizable and soften the caraway flavor somewhat.

Havaldsen Aquavit Triple Cask, 0.7L 40% The surroundings and home Between Norway's mainland and Drammen lies Lier, the green lung of the country and also one of the most fertile regions in the area. This is one of the reasons why Lier is home to so many local farms. Here you can still find very traditional family businesses that work closely with nature and with great care with consideration for future generations. The Kimerud farm is one of them and this is where the Havaldsen Aquavit Triple Cask comes from, which is particularly linked to the history of the company founded in 1785. It is considered a homage, a toast to the master distiller's grandfather, Herold Havaldsen, who toiled as a miner in the Norwegian mountains during his lifetime and fought for freedom in the Navy during World War II. The distillery thus presents a product that it has placed very consciously for itself and that serves as one of its flagship products from the bottom of its heart. The Havaldsen Aquavit Triple Cask and its creation As it was discovered in 2007, the area surrounding the farm offers much more than just plantable soil. A wide variety of fruits, herbs and spices grow in the immediate vicinity, so the idea of using these and creating a product that reflects the landscape, country and people was not far off. The Havaldsen Aquavit Triple Cask uses caraway, coriander, angelica, mint, ginger, orange and lemon peel, some of which are also used in the company's own gin production. The aquavit cuts an impressive figure as an aperitif and as a digestif. When tasting, it shows a scent of fine fresh caraway, strong oak from storage, as well as refreshing orange. The taste seduces with its complexity and the balance between clear oak notes and citrus fruits, paired with the typical caraway. In the finish, you had a very full, characterful aquavit in the glass, which fades away with a long, soft aftertaste.

Nagu Akvavit 0.7L 38% Nagu Distillery The Nagu distillery can be found in the old 'Flipper Boat Factory' in the very southwest of Finland. The distillery was reopened here in 1996 by two childhood friends. They initially started with their own gin, the 'Small Batch Dry Gin', and in the summer of 2020 other products followed: 'Oak Aged Gin' and the 'Akvavit', followed by the Midsummer Gin in 2021. In Finland, aquavit is often served at crayfish festivals, which can also be seen on the bottle label. Its typical dill and caraway flavors complement the salty, savory taste of the crayfish perfectly.
