Genever - Holland Gin Full of Aromatics
Genever is considered the forefather of the popular dry gin. Originating from the Netherlands, genever is a juniper-flavored spirit. There are different types of genever, such as Oude Genever, Jonge Genever, and Corenwijn, which vary in their production and aging processes. Although there are many great cocktails with genever, major brands like Bols, Bokma, De Kuyper, and Zuidam are often enjoyed neat and slightly chilled in their homeland.

Zuidam Oude Genever Peated American Oak 1 Year Special No. 21 1.0L 38% Zuidam The history of the successful Dutch distillery began in 1975 with its foundation by Fred van Zuidam. The desire for a specially created distillate and other exquisite spirits touched the whole family, so they started with a small copper still in a warehouse measuring just 300 square meters and strove for great success. The focus was always on the best quality and locally-sourced products. Today, the range includes not only the country's typical spirit, genever, but also gin, whiskey, various liqueurs and even rum. American Oak Special No. 21 - 1 year barrel-aged The Oude Genever 1 year combines three different types of grain in equal parts: rye, corn and malted barley. The barley strengthens the taste of the genever, whereas the corn provides a certain sweetness in the distillate and the rye adds something spicy and strong. The distinctive aroma is complemented by selected herbs such as anise or licorice and the typical juniper character. After distillation, the wine is stored in American Oak barrels, which in turn gives the genever a slightly smoky aroma.
Bols Genever Amsterdam Barrel Aged Steen 1.0L 42% Bols Genever Amsterdam Barrel Aged Steen It is probably very rare for a Dutch spirits producer not to have Genever in its product range. The Amsterdam-based company Bols thought the same and has now brought a Genever onto the market. It is based on a recipe from the 19th century and is said to have even come from Lucas Bols himself. However, they did not want to simply adopt an old recipe one-to-one, but rather add their own touch or a 'special effect'. So master distiller Piet Van Leijenhorst took on the task and was inspired by American bourbon. The new Bols Genever is made from what is known as Moutwijn. This is a mixture of fermented corn, rye and wheat, which is triple distilled in a copper pot still and then refined with various botanicals. This is followed by the maturation phase in oak barrels for a good 18 months. Over this period, a harmonious and delicate aroma was able to develop, which is characterized by malt flavor. Notes of fresh herbs and a hint of sweet fruit can also be detected in the background.
Zuidam Rogge Genever 5 years 1.0L 35% The history of the Zuidam distillery After Fred van Zuidam had already worked for several years as a master distiller for other distilleries, such as the well-known De Kuyper distillery, he now had the best conditions for self-employment. So he founded the distillery 'Baarle International' in the mid-1970s, named after the location of the distillery, Baarle-Nassau. In order to have a firm foothold in the large spirits market, the company now has a broader portfolio and has not only concentrated on the traditional spirit Geneva, but also has liqueurs in its range, including Millstone whisky.
Wenneker Zeer Oude Korenwijn 0.7L 38% Wenneker The distillery goes to work with a passion for good drinks and a desire to share this with the world. It has been family-owned since it opened in 1693 and sells high-quality liqueurs and spirits that have won many medals. At that time, Hendrick Steeman was granted a license to set up two brandy stills and so the history of the distillery began. In 1812, it was bought by Joannes Wenneker. In 1903, due to a lack of success, his great-grandson Franciscus had to hand it over to Johannes Cornelis van der Tuijn, who thus became the first generation of Van der Tuijns to have the say over the company. Today it is in the fourth generation. With steadily growing success, the Wenneker distillery eventually became too small and they had to expand. As this was not permitted at the Schiedam location, the decision was made to move to Roosendaal, as there are good connections to shipping there, as Roosendaal is located between Rotterdam and Antwerp. In around 230 years, the company has built up a very good reputation on the world market and the distillery's spirits can now be bought in over 50 countries. Wenneker Zeer Oude Korenwijn Like all products from the Wenneker distillery, Korenwijn is made based on original recipes from the 17th century. Korenwijn consists of a combination of malt brandy, grain alcohol and a special distillate of Korenwijn, which consists of a special blend of spices and thus gets its subtle taste. The 3-year maturation phase in selected oak barrels, which hold less than 300 liters of distillate, is also special. As a finish for the Very Old Korenwijn, this mixture is made drinkable from 60% vol. to 38% vol. The opinion of customers has always played a major role at Wenneker and so the taste is tailored to the customers' preferences. In order to achieve a perfect taste experience, only the best rye is used for the base. The botanicals used are the result of years of testing and are subject to the strictest secrecy, but it is clear that juniper must be included.

Zuidam Oude Genever 3 Jaar vatgelagerd 1,0L 38% The roots The physicist Franciscus Sylvius distilled the first genever in the 17th century, laying the foundation for the spirit that is so famous today. However, the products of that time are by no means comparable to the current heyday of the art of distilling. It is hard to imagine the tastes of the first attempts. It was probably convenient that juniper was said to have healing properties and was added to genever. The strong taste of its own also managed to mask the brandy, rough and rather edgy character of the first distillates. Old Tom Gin set a new milestone in terms of know-how, but it still had to be sweetened to meet the demands of the zeitgeist of the time. It was only with the introduction of the column still process that they came close to the current dry gin and managed to produce soft and round raw spirits. The Renaissance Despite all these new methods, Zuidam is now producing genever again. But they now rely on 50 years of tradition and completely new, more modern know-how in the value chain. With the Zuidam Oude Genever 3 years, the perfection they have found is finally coming to the market and to your home. Zuidam has found the right balance for the raw spirit in three equal parts of grain. Corn, rye and barley are crushed in windmills using a time-honored process and mixed with water to form a mash. After fermentation and the first percentage of alcohol has been extracted, the beer is distilled three times in hand-made copper pot stills and part of it is macerated with a secret blend of spices and herbs for the 4th distillation. The modern fruits The three specific qualities of the individual types of grain give the Zuidam Oude Genever 3 years a full sweetness and the necessary backbone. In terms of taste, it seduces with delicate vanilla combined with strong toffee and, thanks to the three-year storage in partly new and old American white oak barrels, delicate, woody oak notes. A genever that is still kept fresh by the juniper and that perfectly combines the new world with its past.
Zuidam Korenwijn 5 Jaar vatgelagerd, 0.5L 38% The story of Zuidam It was in 1975 when the Dutchman Fred van Zuidam decided to found a small spirits factory. His clear philosophy behind it: to produce the highest quality distillates from the best basic ingredients! Even if this idea sounds simple at first, the implementation is very complex. After a long planning and concept phase, Fred van Zuidam finally built his factory on an area of just 300 m², which initially consisted of a copper pot still and a manageable bottling line. As with many newly founded companies, the first few years at Zuidam were a bit difficult, but the hard work paid off and just ten years later, Zuidam Distillers was one of the best known spirits companies in the Netherlands. The founder's wife, Helene van Zuidam, was also heavily involved in this. The designs she created and the use of her own bottle shape ensure Zuidam's special look, which is a unique selling point in the industry. Due to increasing demand, the production line was expanded in 1989 and a hall was added, so that production could now take up 600 m². Fred and Helene van Zuidam have now handed the company over to their two sons Patrick and Gilbert, and the production area has been expanded to 3600 m². While Patrick van Zuidam takes care of the processes within the distillery, his brother Gilbert is responsible for marketing and communications. The two sons are also committed to the principle of supplying customers with the best possible distillate! Zuidam Korenwijn 5 Jaar vatgelagerd This Zuidam Korenwijn Single Barrel, which has been stored in oak barrels for five years, is undoubtedly an extremely high-quality distillate. Korenwijn is a classic Dutch spirit that resembles the 18th century genever style and, like it, is considered the forerunner of gin. This barrel-aged variant impresses with a fine sweetness and notes of chocolate, vanilla and liquorice. The aftertaste is pleasantly mild and surprisingly long. The Zuidam Korenwijn 5 Jaar vatgelagerd is very suitable for authentically mixing gin-based cocktail creations from the 19th century.

Hooghoudt - A family business since 1888 The history of the Hooghoudt family business goes back to 1888. At that time, the married couple Grietje and Jan Hooghoudt opened a small liqueur and spirits factory in what is now the center of Groningen. They made use of the scientific knowledge of the time and produced a wide variety of schnapps and liqueurs based on the latest research results. Always with the aim of retaining as many flavors and active ingredients from the raw materials as possible in the finished product. Due to the high quality and excellent taste of Hooghoudt's products, demand rose quickly and the previous production space was no longer sufficient. In 1914, the factory premises were finally expanded and modernized. The company's next milestone followed in 1920, because in that year Grietje Hooghoudt distilled the company's first own genever, the Oude Klare. In 1926 the second generation of Hooghoudts joined the company and successfully continued the family business. Under the leadership of son Ludolf Hooghoudt, lemonade syrups were successfully introduced, which are still very popular today. Since 1994 the fourth generation of the Hooghoudt family has been responsible for the fortunes of the family business.Under the leadership of Bert Hooghoudt the company's internal and external presentation was completely overhauled and the diverse portfolio now appeals to young and more mature customers. The Hooghoudt Dubbele Graanjenever The Hooghoudt Dubbele Graanjenever is one of the absolute classics in the Hooghoudt portfolio. The basis is the best Dutch rye and grain. After this has been processed into the famous Moutwijn (toll wine), it is double distilled with the addition of juniper and other ingredients such as wormwood, fruit peel and orange peel. To round off the taste, the Hooghoudt Dubbele Graanjenever is then briefly stored in oak barrels. The result is a very pure and complex genever with aromas of juniper, pepper and citrus fruits. If you don't want to drink the Dubbele Graanjenever neat, you can also enjoy it in a tasty combination with orange juice.
Hooghoudt Bessen Genever, 1 L, 20% Hooghoudt - a family business with tradition! The production of liqueurs and spirits has a long tradition in the Netherlands. World-famous brands such as Bols, de Kuyper and Ketel 1 have their origins in our neighboring country. The Hooghoudt company, founded in 1888, fits seamlessly into the long line of traditional companies. The company was founded as a liqueur and spirits manufacturer by the married couple Grietje and Jan Hooghoudt in what is now the center of Groningen. In the beginning, the two experimented with extracts of various herbs and spices on the basis of current scientific publications at the time. The aim was to transfer as many aromas and active ingredients as possible from the raw materials into the finished liqueur. The Hooghoudt family's success proved them right, and due to the high demand for the high-quality products, the production facilities had to be expanded for the first time in 1914. Just a few years later, in 1920, the company distilled its first own genever, Hooghoudt Oude Klare, and was thus able to become independent of external producers. Six years later, the second generation, son Ludolf Hooghoudt, joined the family business. He developed various lemonade syrups that are still very popular today. With Bert Hooghoudt, the fourth generation of the Hooghoudt family is now at the helm and directs the company's fortunes. Under his leadership, the portfolio was expanded to include many new and innovative products and the design of the products was completely overhauled, so that Hooghoudt appeals to younger and older customers with its diverse products. The Hooghoudt Bessen Genever Bessen Genever is a traditional Dutch product that is also becoming increasingly popular in Germany. It is a mixture of genever and extracts from fresh fruit. The Hooghoudt Bessen Genever mainly uses black and red currants, which also significantly shape the aroma of the Bessen Genever. The Hooghoudt Bessen Genever is best enjoyed neat or mixed with Prosecco!
Zuidam Oude Genever 5 years, 1.0L 38% Traditional Dutch liqueurs and spirits As one of the few spirits producers in the Netherlands, the Zuidam distillery still produces its products in a very traditional way. All ingredients processed by Zuidam are 100% natural and are processed using traditional handcraft. In addition to high-quality genever, the distillery also produces rum, whiskey and liqueurs. All product recipes are developed by the owner Fred van Zuidam and his son Patrick. This family collaboration is a special feature in the spirits industry, where many products are often only developed by specialists in the laboratory. When creating recipes, Fred and Patrick from Zuidam see themselves as artists who work with aromas instead of colors. In addition to the quality of the contents, Zuidam also attaches particular importance to the design of the bottles. These are not run-of-the-mill bottles off the production line, but are intended to express the respective product particularly well. The development of the Zuidam distillery In 1975, Fred van Zuidam founded the Zuidam distillery with a clear vision. His distillery should only produce very exclusive products, which are manufactured in a very traditional way. With just one pot still and a small production line, Zuidam began producing his first spirits on 300 m². However, success was not forthcoming and it took over 10 years before Zuidam had earned a reputation as a producer of the highest quality distillates. However, Zuidam was only able to establish itself on the market when his wife Helene von Zuidam began to take care of the design of the bottles. Nowadays, the two brothers Patrick and Gilbert take care of the production and marketing of the products - under the constant supervision of their parents, of course. The distillery site now includes four copper pot stills, four production lines and over 1000 oak barrels on a good 3600 m². What does Zuidam Oude Genever 5 years taste like Only the very best barrels are selected for this special bottling from Zuidam. The genever stored in them is made from barley, wheat malt and corn. After fermentation and distillation of these basic products, various botanicals such as aniseed, juniper and liquorice root are added for maceration. This is followed by storage in barrels made of the best oak for at least 60 months. On the nose and palate, the genever shows fascinating aromas of malt, oak, vanilla and toffee. The long aftertaste is also very malty and extraordinarily smooth. A great genever!

Zuidam Oude Genever 1.0L 38% Best ingredients The master distillers of Zuidam still produce their products in the traditional way. All ingredients are 100% natural and only the best quality is used. The exact recipes of the respective spirits were created together by father Fred and son Patrick van Zuidam. The malted barley, rye and corn used for Zuidam's Genever are still milled in the old-fashioned way by Dutch windmills. In addition to its traditional character, the milling process by windmills also has a very practical advantage. The slow rotation of the millstones means that there is virtually no frictional heat that could affect the quality of the respective flour. The production of Genever After grinding, the mashing begins. For this, the ground corn, rye or malted barley is mixed with hot water and the enzymes break down the starch into sugar. This is followed by fermentation, which takes place at a very low temperature, which gives the genever its fruity aromas. After a week of fermentation, the mash is distilled three times by hand in copper pot stills. The company's Korenwijns are even distilled four times. In the small pot stills, the alcohol vapors come into contact with a particularly large copper surface, which reduces the proportion of undesirable substances in the end product. Parts of the fresh distillate are then distilled again with a secret mixture of herbs and spices and filled into barrels together with the fine spirit from the first distillation process. At Zuidam, new barrels made of American white oak and former bourbon whiskey and oloroso sherry barrels are used for barrel storage. By storing the small barrels in a dry barrel warehouse, the spirits from Zuidam mature relatively quickly. A disadvantage of this method is the high evaporation rate ("Angels Share") of 4-5% per year. Very old Genever The Oude Genever from Zuidam has a high proportion of grain Eau de Vie, which gives it an extremely rich and complex taste. In addition to juniper, aromatics include aniseed and licorice root. After some time in the barrel, the Zuidam Zeer Oude Genever has an intense malty aroma with delicate herbal notes and offers a particularly delicate drinking experience.
