Hernö – organic gin from Sweden!

Best Taste Gin 2017 !!

Sweden has a long culture when it comes to producing high-quality spirits – think of the world-famous Absolut Vodka, for example! However, many lovers still associate gin with the motherland of gin – England! Although the majority of gins are still produced in England today, there have been some qualitative improvements in other countries. For example, Germany with the Monkey 47 Black Forest Dry Gin and France with the G-Vine also have high-quality gins that are known all over the world.

Since 2011, a gin from Sweden, Hernö Gin (organic), has joined the top-class competition and is causing a sensation among connoisseurs around the globe! The Hernö Gin Distillery was founded by Jon Hillgreen, who worked as a bartender in London with some friends in the late 90s. During this time he got to know and love gin and tasted over 100 different bottlings. The great variety fascinated Hillgreen and he decided to delve deeper into the subject. He therefore visited numerous distilleries in the country and exchanged ideas with the master distillers of the individual distilleries. Over time, the decision grew to set up his own gin distillery.

Hillgreen had the Hernö Gin Distillery built in the classic Swedish style with white and red painted wooden beams. The distillery is located in the small town of Dala near the town of Härnösand in Ångermanland, making it the northernmost gin production facility in the world!

The Hernö Old Tom Gin (ORGANIC)
In England, Hillgreen also got to know Old Tom Gin. A slightly sweet gin that was mainly drunk in the 19th century. He wanted to bring this old style of gin to Sweden. Like the "normal" Hernö Gin, Old Tom Gin is made from eight different - organically grown - botanicals. The meadowsweet used is, however, dosed more heavily and the gin is then sweetened with a little honey and sugar. This creates a slightly sweet gin that still has all the typical gin aromas such as juniper, citrus and coriander! A very successful Old Tom Gin!

Ransom Old Tom Gin, 0,7 L, 44%
Ransom Old Tom Gin 0.7L 44% This remarkable Old Tom Gin is produced by Ransom Spirits, based in Oregon, USA. The gin is a remake of the "Old Tom" style of gin, which was extremely popular in England in the 18th century. It is a slightly sweetened gin that is the basis of many classic cocktail recipes. Ransom Spirits developed its Old Tom Gin with the help of the famous cocktail historian David Wondrich, who also developed a Curaçao with Cognac Ferrand that was named "Spirit of the Year 2013".In the production of Ransom Old Tom Gin, a malty spice is used, which is also why the subtle malt notes on the nose are due to it. After distillation, various herbs and spices are added to the base for maceration and then distilled in small pot stills and the best fraction of the distillation is bottled. A great Old Tom Gin that is ideal for the Martinez cocktail.

Hernö High Coast Terroir Gin 2018, 0,5L 46,8%
Hernö High Coast Terroir Gin 2018 0.5L 46.8% Hernö Hernö Distillery is the first gin distillery in Sweden. The story began with a passion for gin and the resulting dream of crafting your own gin. The distillery is based in Dala, somewhere almost in the middle of nowhere in Sweden and yet in the gin world, where the founder Jon Hillgren bought an old 18th century farm in 2011 and converted it into the Hernö Distillery with the support of his family. Dala has a natural beauty and always inspires with its diverse flora and fauna, which always gives Jon the strength to keep dreaming and turn these dreams into fantastic creations. In 2012, Hernö Gin was introduced in three local Systembolaget stores. People lined up to get a bottle of this incredibly good gin that everyone was talking about. In 2013, Hernö Gin became the most awarded gin at the International Gin Masters 2013 and thus achieved its international breakthrough. In order to meet the new high demand, the company had to expand. By selling shares to gin enthusiasts, a new distillery with a visitor center was built. Taste notes The distillery's award-winning gins are made exclusively from organically grown, natural botanicals. Only around 400 bottles of this edition, Hernö High Coast Terroir Gin, were bottled. In 2000, Sweden's High Coast was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Shaped by the last ice ages, you can find a great variety of flora and fauna there. It was precisely these extraordinary herbs, spices and berries that were intended to be brought to the customer in the Hernö High Coast Terroir Gin. All botanicals used for distillation were hand-picked on the High Coast. Rowan berries, willowherb, spruce shoots and hops are used in this gin. These are intended to give you the feeling of a leisurely walk in the forest and conjure up a piece of the rugged coast in the glass. On the nose you primarily smell juniper, on the palate it is more spicy and herbaceous, you can detect a slight sweetness from spruce shoots. Rowan berries and hops are more in the background, along with a little citrus freshness. In the finish, the juniper taste lingers on the palate with a pleasant sharpness. A gin that speaks of the landscape it comes from.

Hernö Sipping Gin 2019 1.3 ex Islay Cask 0,5L 49,1%
Hernö Sipping Gin 2019 0.5L 49.1% Hernö Distillery When the founder of the Hernö Distillery, Jon Hillgren, moved to London in 1999 and earned his money there as a bartender, his attention to the drink for which the English were so famous grew. He quickly became particularly enthusiastic about balanced and very special gins. Hillgren continued to work with gin outside of everyday bar life, too; he was interested in gin production and took part in workshops. He also took scientific studies and techniques from major manufacturers to heart. During this time, Jon acquired a lot of knowledge and the craft of gin production. When he returned to his home in northern Sweden in 2011, he founded the Hernö Distillery. With the new foundation he also earned himself the title of 'northernmost distillery in the world', as the distillery is located in the small town of Dala in the High Coast region in the far north of Sweden. Sipping Gin The idea behind the Sipping Gin series was to contribute to a stronger visitor industry as a local company. The first editions at the Hernö Open House, as well as the High Coast Whisky Festival and the exclusive first order options for the special editions, the aim was to increase the attractiveness of the gin. For the Sipping Gin No. 1.3. ex Ardbeg Cask, the gin was stored for 21 days in old whisky barrels that were previously used by Ardbeg. Master Distiller Jon Hillgren himself says that this bottling is the 'most powerful' in this series so far. When tasting, the first thing you notice is the characteristic Hernö taste, but then the influences of the barrel storage become apparent: peat, oak and smoke aromas have been transferred into the gin. Its taste is convincing with smoke aromas and a fine scent of caramel and fresh coffee. Vanilla and fresh citrus notes are present in the background and offer an unforgettable experience. It's always worth being quick with the special limited editions from the Hernö distillery, because as is often the case with Hernö, the focus was initially on sales at the High Coast Whisky Festival and at Hernö Gin's Open House in Dala. Only a few bottles are now available for public sale.

Hernö Pink BTL (Bottle) Gin (Bio) 0,5L 42%
Hernö Pink BTL (Bottle) Gin Organic 0.5L 42% Founded in 2011 With the purchase of an old farm from the 18th century by Jon Hillgreen in 2011, a new era of a gin distillery in Sweden began. The founder was inspired by the natural beauty of the region around Dala and the craft itself. The distillery produces gins that are produced in copper kettles. Despite its young age, the distillery has already been able to prove how much experience it already has and what great products it creates, because between 2013 and 2017 Hernö Gin was the most award-winning gin in Europe, and in 2017/18 it was named World Best Gin, and further awards have followed steadily. Tasting Hernö Rosa BTL Gin Artificial flavors, additional sugar or color additives are not used in this Hernö Pink BTL Dry Gin. Despite the name and the sweet, fruity notes associated with it, the focus is primarily on a distinct juniper aroma, both on the nose and on the palate, followed by fresh citrus notes and the aroma of red fruits combined with a pleasant spiciness. These fruity aromas enchant the palate at first, but are quickly covered by the notes of juniper. It takes a while for these to assert themselves again. The taste is rounded off by spicy notes of cassis and cinnamon that linger into a long finish.

In terms of taste, Hernö has once again come up with something special. They wanted to create a gin with a clear line, so only 8 botanicals were used here: Vanilla, cinnamon bark, meadowsweet, lemon peel, black pepper, coriander seeds, lingonberry (a plant species related to the American cranberry or European lingonberry) and juniper berries. After distillation, the gin matured in Swedish birch barrels. Aromas The first notes that hit your nose are fresh birch wood paired with clear notes of juniper and meadowsweet. On the palate, sweet floral notes develop alongside the clear juniper notes.
