Gin with a Far Eastern touch
Bombay Sapphire East Gin takes up the striking design of its successful brother Bombay Sapphire and comes in a well-known light blue bottle and an elegant label dominated by dark tones. The brand, which belongs to the Bacardi Group, is now expanding its product range with another premium gin that is intended to score points primarily with Far Eastern aromas. Currently only available in selected markets, this gin was presented to a wide mass of gin lovers in North American cities towards the end of 2012 and immediately received great applause.
The botanicals used
Like Bombay Sapphire, the base is based on 10 botanicals. These include Tuscan juniper berries, lily root, Chinese licorice and angelica. For Bombay Sapphire East Gin, the successful recipe has now been expanded to include a few flavorings, and thus Spanish bitter almonds and lemon peel, cinnamon bark from Indonesia, Moroccan coriander, grains of paradise from Africa, lemongrass from Thailand and black pepper from Vietnam have found their way into this exquisite variant of a gin for the 21st century.
The production of Bombay Sapphire East Gin
Just like the well-known Bombay Sapphire Gin, Bombay Sapphire East is distilled using the so-called steam infusion process, whereby the rising alcohol vapors are passed through a container filled with spices and herbs, thereby gently enriching them with the aromas of the botanicals. It is thanks to this complex process that Bombay Sapphire East Gin knows how to convince with its wonderfully rich nuances and distinctive, complex aroma.
Bombay Sapphire East Gin taste
Bottled at 42% ABV, this gin is positioned somewhat above Bombay Sapphire, which was castrated in Germany a few years ago from its original 47% ABV to 40% ABV, and as a result this resulted in some unpleasant comments about this questionable step.
Black pepper is the dominant first impression here, and the symbiosis it forms with the juniper berries is both surprising and delicate. Tones of lemongrass then spread out, making room for the aromas already found in Bombay Sapphire, such as coriander and citrus peel. A light nutty sweetness can be detected, which can probably be attributed to the use of cinnamon bark and almonds. The conclusion is simple: A very balanced, complex gin with an exotic flair, ideally suited to provide the basis for great classics such as Gin & Tonic or Dry Martini Cocktails.
