The origin of Ron Espero's Creole Coconut & Rum lies in the Dominican Republic, an island state between the Atlantic and the Caribbean, which shares the island of Hispaniola with the state of Haiti. Although the island is one of the pioneers in the cultivation of sugar cane - a sugar mill existed as early as 1516 - it is often overlooked by rum enthusiasts. This may be due, among other things, to the fact that the Dominican Republic operated a pre-industrial agricultural economy before it was incorporated into the American sugar empire at the end of the 19th century. Like Puerto Rico and Cuba, the country was subject to strict fiscal controls in North America in the 1930s, and the economy was dominated by huge sugar companies that exported most of the rum it produced to Europe. The brutal dictatorship under Rafael Leónidas Trujillo Molina until the 1960s brought further challenges for the rum producers based in the Dominican Republic. In recent decades, however, not only has tourism grown, but the rum brands of the Dominican Republic have also gained international recognition. Brands such as Brugal and Barceló are helping to further strengthen the reputation of rums from the Dominican Republic.
