What exactly Christopher Columbus thought when he first saw the island's long sandy beaches and bays is unfortunately not known - but it is certain that he was probably just as fascinated by the island's beauty as the thousands of tourists who travel to the Caribbean island every year.

One person who was also fascinated by the beauty of the idyllic island of St. Kitts, which together with the island of Nevis forms the island state of St. Kitts and Nevis, is the entrepreneur Bob Brinley. In 1986, he founded an electronics company on the island that manufactured temperature sensors. As the company was doing well, Bob Brinley and his family settled on the island. However, when he had to give up the electronics company after many successful years, Bob Brinley and his son Zach considered how they could make money on the small island from now on. Zach then gave up his well-paid job on Wall Street and decided to do something completely new with his father - rum.

The two had one goal firmly in mind: to bring the smoothest spiced rum in the world to market! The first product in the portfolio of the then young company was Brinley Rum Vanilla. A noble blend of fine rum and the best vanilla from Madagascar. The locals and visitors to the island were immediately enthusiastic and the experts at the renowned International Rum Festival in Newfoundland awarded Brinley Rum Vanilla two gold medals in its first year. Driven by this success, other products followed, such as Brinley Rum Mango, Coconut, Coffee and Spiced!

Ever since the well-respected company Opici was won over as a sales partner in the USA, it was clear that the family business wanted to operate worldwide. Brinley's spiced rums have recently become available in Germany and are rapidly becoming more popular here.

The Brinley Shipwreck Spiced

The basis for the Brinley Shipwreck Spiced is a high-quality four-year-old rum that was distilled from molasses using traditional methods and allowed to mature in wooden barrels. Rums made from molasses are considered to be very aromatic and complex and are therefore ideal for making spiced rums. The base rum is flavored with vanilla, nutmeg, cloves, orange and other spices.

The Brinley Shipwreck Spiced is a very complex spiced rum that is not only suitable for enjoying with cola. The multitude of flavors are waiting to be discovered and so connoisseurs drink it at room temperature or on ice - but mostly neat!

Originally founded as Licorerias Unidas in 1959 in La Miel, the company was initially under the management of the Canadian group Seagrams. The aim was to bring together all the major Venezuelan alcohol distribution companies. After the takeover of Seagram in 2002 by the spirits groups Pernod Ricard and Diageo, they are now responsible for the distribution of Botucal rum. The Botucal Reserva Exclusiva is the most successful bottling among the various Botucal variants. A complex blend of different rums, distilled in copper pot stills and matured in oak barrels for at least 12 years before they are artfully married and bottled at 40% ABV. This copper-colored rum reveals fine aromas of cocoa, dried ginger, cloves and fruit bread on the nose. On the palate it presents complex notes of caramel candies, vanilla, orange zest and banana, followed by a medium-long finish with an abundance of dried fruit and chocolate.

La Hechicera Extra Anejo Rum 0.05L 40% In Germany, rum is often associated exclusively with the Caribbean. But this perspective is more the result of the marketing of large corporations, because the largest producer of sugar cane spirits in the world is South America. From Mexico to Patagonia, rum and related products are the preferred spirit, which means that there are a variety of different rum styles on the South American continent. Colombian rum is particularly popular with connoisseurs. Colombian rum is often described as medium-heavy in body and fruity-chocolatey in taste. A well-known example is Dictador Rum, and the XO variants of this first-class rum in particular are highly praised by experts and connoisseurs. For several years, however, another Colombian rum has been fighting for the top position - La Hechicera Rum. La Hechicera Rum is produced in a part of Colombia that borders the Caribbean Sea and is exposed to similar climatic conditions as the famous Caribbean rums. The La Hechicera Extra Anejo Rum 0.05L 40%, distilled from molasses, matures for 12-21 years in American white oak barrels. The name is derived from the Spanish word "enchantress". And this rum also presents itself magically in the glass, with a color reminiscent of maple syrup. On the nose, it reveals elegant aromas of orange peel, toffee, wood and vanilla. On the palate, it unfolds an impressive complexity with explosive aromas of tobacco, roasted coffee, dark chocolate, walnuts and apricot. The finish is surprisingly mild and long. La Hechicera is definitely a rum that should be enjoyed neat or slightly chilled and is ideal as a digestif or accompaniment to a medium-strength Colombian cigar.
