The history of Abuelo Rum

Abuelo Rum is produced by the company Varela Hermanos SA, whose history goes back to 1908. At that time, the young Spanish immigrant Don José Varela Blanco built a small sugar factory in the city of San Isidro in the newly formed Republic of Panama. At that time, the city had a population of just under 10,000, most of whom specialized in growing sugar cane, so Don José Varela Blanco was always able to obtain raw materials for his new factory quickly and cheaply.

In 1936, Don José Varela Blanco finally began distilling alcohol based on sugar cane, following the wishes of his three sons. The rums produced by the young company quickly enjoyed an excellent reputation throughout the country and Varela Hermanos SA quickly managed to take a leading position in the national spirits industry.
In 1976 the old stills were finally replaced with a modern distillation plant, laying the foundation for the continued successful existence of Varela Hermanos SA. Alongside numerous other products, one rum stands out as the company's primary product: Abuelo Rum!

The production of Abuelo Rum Anejo Gran Reserva 12 years

The production process of Abuelo Rum Anejo Gran Reserva 12 years begins on the company's own plantations. There, experienced employees take care of the perfect cultivation and care of the sugar cane. Once it has ripened optimally, it is pressed. To produce Abuelo Rum Anejo Gran Reserva 12 years, only so-called "virgin sugar cane honey", i.e. sugar cane juice from the first pressing, is used. This guarantees the very best quality! After this has been fermented, the Abuelo rum is carefully distilled in distillation columns.
