Mezcal & Sotol - agave and dasyliria spirit
While the Mexican national drink tequila must originate from the city of Tequila in the state of Jalisco, agave spirit produced outside this area is known as mezcal (or mescal). Mezcal is divided into three quality levels: Blanco Mezcal, Reposado Mezcal and Añejo Mezcal and is usually drunk as a digestif or in cocktails and long drinks. The drinks Mezcal Old Fashioned and Mezcal Sazerac are particularly popular. A “worm” is occasionally found in mezcal as a marketing gag. Sotol is also a Mexican spirit with a taste similar to tequila. Unlike tequila and mezcal, however, sotol is not distilled from agave but from dasyliria. Sotol is also divided into three quality levels: Blanco, Reposado and Añejo. Well-known mezcal & sotol brands are San Cosme and Hacienda de Chihuahua.

The Lost Explorer Tobalá Mezcal 0.2L 42%The Lost Explorer Mezcal Tobalá 0.2L with 42% ABV is an exclusive premium mezcal from Mexico, representing the highest level of craftsmanship and sustainable production. Made from the rare Tobalá agave, this mezcal is among the finest representatives of its category. It is produced in San Pablo Huixtepec in Oaxaca – one of the most important regions for authentic mezcal. On the ancestral lands of the Mixtec people in the Central Valleys, the agaves grow on mineral-rich, volcanic soils and develop their unique aroma over many years. Under the direction of Maestro Mezcalero Fortino Ramos, only perfectly ripened agave plants are harvested and processed by hand. The agave hearts are traditionally cooked in underground pits and brick ovens, giving the mezcal its characteristic depth. After gentle crushing, a double distillation takes place, resulting in a particularly fine and complex distillate. On the palate, Tobalá Mezcal impresses with elegant, subtle vanilla notes that blend harmoniously with hints of leather and mineral nuances. These are reminiscent of the complexity of a fine Scotch whisky. The smooth, earthy finish is accompanied by fresh citrus notes and a touch of spring grass. An exceptional mezcal for connoisseurs and lovers of rare agave spirits – ideal for enjoying neat and for special occasions.

The Lost Explorer Salmiana Mezcal 0.2L 42%The Lost Explorer Mezcal Salmiana is an exceptional premium mezcal from Mexico that combines traditional craftsmanship with sustainable production. Made from 12-year-aged Salmiana agave, this mezcal comes from the renowned San Pablo Huixtepec region in Oaxaca – the heart of mezcal culture. The journey of this special distillate begins on the ancestral lands of the Mixtec people in the Central Valleys. Under the expertise of Maestro Mezcalero Fortino Ramos, the agave matures for 8 to 12 years on mineral-rich, volcanic soil until it reaches its optimal ripeness. Only then are they carefully harvested by hand. The agave hearts are traditionally cooked both in underground pits and in brick ovens above ground. This elaborate process gives the mezcal its complex aroma. The hearts are then gently crushed and double-distilled to create a particularly expressive and elegant distillate. On the nose, Mezcal Salmiana reveals fresh notes of green chilies, tangy grapefruit peel, and damp agave after a summer rain. On the palate, the vibrant citrus notes continue, accompanied by subtle nuances of dried herbs. The finish is spicy, long-lasting, and characterized by a balanced minerality. Montelobos Espadin Mezcal 0.7L 43.2% What is Mezcal? Mezcal is a traditional Mexican agave spirit, similar to tequila, and historians say it is one of the oldest spirits in the world. Who and where exactly the inventor is, however, is somewhat unclear. Some sources claim that Mezcal was first mentioned in the 16th century and was invented in what is now Mexico. Others say that the Indians invented distillation over 3000 years ago. The fact is, however, that Mezcal can only be produced in Mexico today; the designation of origin has been in effect since 1995. Quality levels As is often the case with plant species used for spirits, there is an extensive variety of varieties. There are up to 50 different types of agave to choose from for production. The most commonly used variety for mezcal is the 'Espadín'. In addition to the agave itself, it is also permissible to use up to 20% other sugar sources in production, according to which the quality levels are divided: Tipo | stands for mezcal made from 100% agave; Tipo || for mezcal made from at least 80% agave and 20% other types of sugar. Taste This agave spirit has its very own aroma, it is difficult to create a clear definition here, it is often described as light and refreshing. Notes of sweet honey and fresh, cut grass but also the aroma of tropical fruits flatter the palate, along with slightly nutty aromas and subtle wood notes.
