One of them is Basil Hayden Sr., a distiller from Maryland, without whom bourbon whiskey as we know it today would simply be unthinkable. Actually from the east coast, Basil Hayden and 25 other families moved to Nelson County, in what is now the US state of Kentucky, at the end of the 18th century, where they founded a Catholic parish. Grain that was not needed for food at the time could be used to preserve it for whiskey production. As master distiller, Basil Hayden was responsible for the production of whiskey in the community.
