In the history of American whiskey there have been many personalities who have distinguished themselves through their inventiveness and pioneering spirit. One of them is Basil Hayden Sr., a distiller from Maryland, without whom bourbon whiskey as we know it today would simply be unthinkable.
Actually from the east coast, Basil Hayden and 25 other families moved to Nelson County, in what is now the US state of Kentucky, at the end of the 18th century, where they founded a Catholic parish. Grain that was not needed for food at the time could be used to preserve it for whiskey production. As master distiller, Basil Hayden was responsible for the production of whiskey in the community. In this role, he developed a completely new whiskey recipe by breaking with the centuries-old tradition of using only one type of grain. Instead, he added a large amount of rye to the mash. This enabled Basil Hayden to add a certain spice and additional complexity to the sweet, mild taste of the corn whiskey of the time. Although this innovation caused a lot of controversy in the traditional distillery circles of the time, adding other types of grain to the whiskey mash is common practice today. Many distilleries have their own closely guarded recipe, which often contains wheat or barley malt.
With his invention, Basil Hayden is undoubtedly one of the most important figures in the history of American whiskey.

Baker's Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey 7 years, 0.7L 53.5% History and production of Baker's Bourbon 7 years: The Jim Beam distillery is undoubtedly one of the most famous and popular whiskey distilleries in the world. The Jim Beam White Label in particular, with its soft, gentle taste, represents the typical taste profile of a Kentucky Straight Bourbon like no other whiskey. The Jim Beam distillery was founded by Jakob Böhm, who was of German descent. The son of German emigrants moved from Pennsylvania to Maryland at the age of 18 to grow grain. As early as 1788, he produced his first whiskey from surplus grain. A few years later, he moved to Kentucky and operated a water-powered mill there. As payment for grinding grain, Böhm received grain from the farmers, which he used to produce whiskey. Jakob Böhm changed his name to Jacob Beam and in 1795 sold his first whiskey barrel under the name Old Jake Beam. In 1820, Jacob Beam handed over management of his distillery to his son David Beam. Today, the distillery is still in the hands of the Beam family. The Jim Beam distillery recently released four hand-selected, top-class Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskeys in the Small Batch Bourbon Collection.
