Journeyman Last Feather Rye Whiskey 0.5L 45% History and production of the Journeyman Last Feather Rye Whiskey: The Journeyman Distillery from the rural town of Three Oaks, in the US state of Michigan, was opened in 2011 by the friendly master distiller Bill Welter and has been producing first-class organic spirits ever since. While the term craft distillery has been used rather inflationary in the recent past, it is all the more gratifying that the Journeyman Distillery has established itself on the scene as a distillery that embodies the values of the craft movement like no other. Elaborate handwork, an awareness of tradition, the use of organically grown ingredients, the pursuit of the best quality and the love and passion for their own product are the cornerstones of the family business. All spirits are organically certified and are made from locally grown grain. At Journeyman, the main focus is on traditional American whiskey. In addition, gin variations, vodkas, rums and special creations have also been released in limited editions in the recent past. The distillery itself was built in a former corset factory. In the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries, corsets made of featherbone were produced there, which were in demand worldwide due to the innovative production method and gave the town of Three Oaks a certain notoriety. Today, this role is taken on by the Journeyman Distillery with the award-winning Journeyman Last Feather Rye Whiskey. The grain mash consists largely of organic rye. Wheat and barley, also organically grown, are also used. Master distiller and founder Bill Welter developed and perfected the recipe for his rye whiskey at the Koval distillery in Chicago. The first rye whiskey was eventually distilled at Koval, filled into barrels there and then transported by pickup to the Journeyman Distillery for storage. In reference to the Ravenswood district in Chicago, where the Koval distillery is located, the whiskey was eventually called Ravenswood Rye Whiskey. All spirits now come from the company's own distillery. For legal reasons, the name Ravenswood Rye could no longer be used and so only one feather, the "Last Feather", remained of the once proud raven. Taste of the Journeyman Last Feather Rye Whiskey: The Journeyman Last Feather Rye Whiskey is a complete surprise on the nose. The typical rye spice is initially dominated by intense, fruity aromas. Oranges, bananas, honeydew melons and pears are present, along with notes of nuts, butter biscuits and baked apples. Over time, the rye takes over the reins and ensures a strong and extremely complex aroma. The taste of the Journeyman Last Feather Rye Whiskey initially shows complex grain notes, marble cake and oak. This is followed by cinnamon, black pepper, spicy rye bread and cloves. The Journeyman Last Feather Rye Whiskey's interplay of fruity, sweet and spicy aromas creates a multi-layered taste experience that is absolutely unique for a rye whiskey. Nevertheless, it does not lack in power and intensity. The finish is medium-long and dry, with herbal notes of coriander and ginger. Overall, the Journeyman Last Feather Rye Whiskey is an extremely successful rye whiskey that will delight you with its unique flavor nuances.
Journeyman WR White Whiskey 0.5L 45% History and production of Journeyman WR White Whiskey: The Journeyman Distillery, founded in 2011 by Bill Welter in the US state of Michigan, just 100 km from Chicago, has built up a veritable reputation in the craft scene over the last four years. The spirits produced there in small quantities are all organically certified and impress with their exceptional taste and first-class quality. In addition to the standard bottlings, which include bourbon and rye whiskey as well as gin, limited editions are regularly presented, which often have a historical reference to the founder or the historic factory hall in which the distillery was built. Bill Welter dedicated the Journeyman WR White Whiskey to his father and grandfather as well as to all the journeymen who, after their examination, embark on a multi-year journey in order to expand their technical and operational knowledge and improve their own skills. The W and R in the name of the Journeyman WR White Whiskey do not only come from the first names of his father and grandfather, but also stand for "white rye", i.e. unaged rye whiskey. Because that's what this exceptional product is all about. The Journeyman WR White Whiskey is made from the same grain mash that is used for the Journeyman Last Feather Rye Whiskey, which is also available here in the shop. This consists mainly of organic rye, which is supplemented by organically grown wheat and a little barley. The difference to its big brother lies in the subsequent storage. In the case of the Journeyman WR White Whiskey, this is less than 24 hours. The barrels made of American white oak are freshly burned out and during this time hardly give off any color or barrel aromas and only provide a slight rounding of the taste. Filled in stylishly designed bottles sealed with black wax, the Journeyman WR White Whiskey presents the natural, fresh taste of an unaged rye brandy. Taste of the Journeyman WR White Whiskey: On the nose, the Journeyman WR White Whiskey is extremely fruity and lively. Bananas, apples, grapefruits and pears form a wonderfully fresh bouquet that is reminiscent of fruit salad. Accompanied by the unadulterated aromas of rye and wheat, notes of licorice and ginger can be seen in the background. The taste of the Journeyman WR White Whiskey is clearly dominated by rye. The intense spiciness is balanced by a certain malt sweetness, which creates a surprisingly soft, creamy mouthfeel without alcoholic sharpness. In addition, there are hints of baked apples, pears, caramel, toffee and mint. It is really amazing what variety of tastes and aromas can emerge in an unaged grain spirit. Intense fruitiness, malt sweetness but also herbal and spicy notes form a wonderful unity with a lot of harmony, without barrel aromas being able to cover up these light, almost delicate notes. Together with the creamy texture and the long, oily finish, the Journeyman WR White Whiskey is an all-round successful product that receives our unreserved recommendation.
Journeyman Corsets, Whips & Whiskey 0.5L 58.5% History and production of the Journeyman Corsets, Whips & Whiskey: The Journeyman Distillery was founded in 2011 by Bill Welten in the tranquil town of Three Oaks, in the US federal state of Michigan. Until a few years ago, the friendly master distiller worked in the family bank. This was sold and Welter looked for a new challenge. He traveled the world and lived in Scotland for a few years, where he fell in love with single malt whisky. The desire to distill his own whisky quickly grew in him. By a lucky coincidence he met Greg Ramsay. He runs his own distillery in Tasmania, Australia, where Welter was able to work for a few weeks. Bill Welter visited many more distilleries, mostly in the USA, and gained important experiences and impressions from every single one. Finally, the time had come for him to look for a suitable place for his stills. He finally found one in Three Oaks. The EK Warren featherbone factory, a former corset factory, was the perfect place for Welter to set up his own distillery. After an extensive renovation phase, production of his first-class organic spirits finally started in 2011. In addition to bourbon, wheat and rye whiskey, the craft distillery also produces various gin variations, vodka, rum and limited specialties. One specialty is certainly the Journeyman Corsets, Whips & Whiskey, which is made from 100% organically grown wheat. Whiskey made from wheat is quite rare, as the production process is very complex and can only be managed with a lot of experience and skill. The result is extremely mild and soft, with intense notes of vanilla and caramel. Storage in fresh American white oak barrels also contributes to the gentle taste of the Journeyman Corsets, Whips & Whiskey. The Journeyman Corsets, Whips & Whiskey is bottled undiluted, i.e. at cask strength, with a strong 58.3% alcohol by volume and, of course, without the addition of coloring. Taste of the Journeyman Corsets, Whips & Whiskey: On the nose, the Journeyman Corsets, Whips & Whiskey has rich notes of vanilla, caramel, oranges, coconuts and baked apples. In the background, there are hints of raisins, apricots and spicy oak. You definitely can't tell how strong the alcohol is when you smell the Journeyman Corsets, Whips & Whiskey. Rather, the aromas appear very delicate and harmonious, with no trace of alcoholic spiciness. The full power of the Journeyman Corsets, Whips & Whiskey is revealed in the taste. The high alcohol content ensures a powerful start. Notes of vanilla, toffees, marshmallows and biscuits are present. There are also spicy oak, black pepper and cinnamon. The Journeyman Corsets, Whips & Whiskey can easily tolerate the addition of water. This opens up the bouquet and light fruit aromas emerge. On the tongue, the Journeyman Corsets, Whips & Whiskey is then significantly milder and there is a gentle creaminess. The finish is long and surprisingly spicy. The Journeyman Corsets, Whips & Whiskey is an all-round successful product, which is unlikely to be found anywhere else. Perfect for pure enjoyment after adding water, it also plays a leading role in cocktails and mixed drinks.
Journeyman Corsets, Whips and Whiskey 0.05L 58.5% The whisky scene is booming worldwide. In America, too, whisky producers are bustling with new ideas. In order to stand out from the usual mass products, many small and medium-sized companies have formed across the country to compete with the large corporations. They want to stand out from the crowd through loving handcraft, sustainability and special flavors. With the opening of the Journeyman Distillery in 2011, these founders are also trying to carve out a special place for themselves in the industry. If you know the translation of the company name, you can already guess that there is a lot of dedication to craftsmanship here. Journeyman means 'journeyman'. This very young distillery can be found in Three Oaks in the state of Michigan. Organic products are also used here, which means that the ingredients used all come from the surrounding region and corn, wheat, barley and rye are grown organically by local farmers. The organic seal that they receive as a result is only valid in America, however. The Journeyman Distillery mainly concentrates on producing whiskeys and gin, but there are also other limited specialties. Taste of Corsets, Whips & Whiskey The whiskey is named after the products once made in the historic building: corsets and whips. Corsets, Whips is the single grain, barrel version of Journeyman's Buggy Whipp Wheat Whiskeys. The limited release whiskey shows the high and particularly good quality of the wheat from Michigan. Because Corsets, Whip & Whisky is a single distillation of 100% wheat, which gives the whisky its pleasant sweetness and softness and is bottled at cask strength. When tasting it, it has a great mouthfeel, thick and chewy. The sweetness is not too intrusive and harmonizes very well with the citrus, vanilla and caramel notes. Warming and complex in taste, a perfectly harmonious whisky.
Journeyman Last Feather Rye Whiskey Miniature 0.05L 45% The story behind the Journeyman Distillery When the founder of the Journeyman Distillery considered opening a distillery, he realized that he had to do an apprenticeship first. He lived in Scotland for a few years and learned the ins and outs of a whisky distillery. He knew that making whisky was something he enjoyed and that he wanted to get into the business. In 2010, he began an apprenticeship at Koval Distillery in Chicago. They are known for first-class, organic-certified and even kosher spirits in the Midwest. There he developed his own recipes and during this time he perfected the one that would later become THE recipe for 'Last Feather Rye'. The distillery is located in an old building of a former corset and whip factory in Three Oaks, Michigan. The building dates back to the 1800s and the above-mentioned products were manufactured there until the 19th century, when it was finally able to accommodate the Journeyman Distillery after extensive renovation work. The distillery gets the ingredients for the whiskey mainly from local producers, and the special blend of rye and wheat as well as a small amount of barley to round off the taste come from farmers in the Midwest. Last Feather Rye The Last Feather Rye whiskey is the company's flagship product. It is one of the few rye whiskeys that is also very wheat-heavy. This offers a pleasant spiciness from the rye and a slight sweetness from the wheat. After distillation, Journeyman Last Feather Rye Whisky is bottled in new barrels made of American white oak. The taste is of ripe banana mixed with spices and spicy pepper. If you don't dare to grab a large bottle straight away, you now have the option of purchasing the Last Feather Rye in a sample size of 0.05l per bottle.
