Willett – An expensive pleasure?

Willett – When lovers of good American rye whiskey hear this name, their mouths start to water. The older bottlings from the Willett Distillery in particular are sought-after collectors' items and are now even objects of speculation. You can quickly spend several hundred euros if you want to treat yourself to a bottle of Willett Rye Whiskey 23 years - assuming you even get the chance to buy one of these rare bottlings.

Thank goodness there are also excellent whiskeys from Willett that are still affordable and still offer a lot of enjoyment - one of them is the Willett Family Estate Rye Whiskey 7 years.

The history of the Willett distillery

The whiskey distillery was founded shortly after Prohibition, more precisely in 1936. The company concentrated on the production of bourbon whiskey and rye whiskey and was able to successfully establish itself in the competitive market. Due to the so-called "bourbon crisis" (sales of bourbon fell into crisis worldwide) in the 1970s, the distillery had to cope with heavy losses and ultimately ceased operations completely a good ten years later. However, one person continued to believe in the success of the Willett brand - Even Kulsveen, Martha Willet's husband. For this reason, he acquired the shares of the other family members and finally opened a new distillery on the same site in 2012. Classic bourbon and rye whiskey is now produced, stored and bottled there.

The Willett Family Estate Rye Whiskey 7 years

Although the actual distillery was closed, Kulsveen also had his company Kentucky Bourbon Distillers produce whiskey according to the original Willett recipe and have it matured and bottled on the Willett premises. The mash bill of this great rye consists of 95% rye and 5% malted barley.

After distillation, the rye matures for a full seven years in American white oak barrels before it is finally bottled without chill filtration and at the strong cask strength of 57.2%. The copper-colored Willett 7 years shows intense aromas of chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, citrus fruits and maple syrup on the nose and palate. The aftertaste is long, balanced and full of flavor intensity. A great rye, whose stock is unfortunately limited!

Willett Family Estate Rye Whiskey 6 years, 0.7L, 58.7% Willett - A company with a long history For older Rye Whiskey bottlings from the Willett Distillery, lovers and collectors are prepared to pay up to four-figure sums. A real cult has developed around these very rare bottlings and the Willett distillery enjoys an excellent reputation among connoisseurs. However, you don't necessarily have to spend a large part of your monthly earnings on a bottle of Willett Rye, because fortunately there are also affordable and very tasty younger bottlings, such as this Willett Family Estate Rye Whiskey 6 years. The original Willett distillery was founded in 1936, shortly after the end of American Prohibition. In the decades that followed, business was good and the distillery was able to establish itself firmly in the Bardstown, Kentucky region. In the 1970s, however, the distillery fell into crisis due to a strong stagnation in demand for bourbon whiskey and, to the regret of many connoisseurs, finally had to cease operations in the 1980s. The Norwegian entrepreneur Even Kulsveen, husband of Martha Willet, however, had the ambition to continue running the Willett distillery with his company Kentucky Bourbon Distillers and bought the Willett Distillery from the remaining family members. In 2012 the time had finally come and the distillery was put back into operation and the production of bourbon whiskey and rye whiskey began. The Willett Family Estate Rye Whiskey 6 years This 6-year-old Willett Rye was distilled by Kulsveen's company in Indiana and then matured for six years in barrels made of American white oak in the Willett distillery. The mash bill consisted of 95% rye and 5% barley malt. The already very full-bodied rye whiskey impresses on the nose with a beautiful sweetness and aromas of spices and cocoa. On the palate there is a whole potpourri of aromas reminiscent of vanilla, dried fruit, oak and black tea. The aftertaste is of medium length and impresses above all with its mild and balanced character. The Willett Family Estate Rye Whiskey 6 years is not chill-filtered and bottled at cask strength with a solid 58.7% vol.

Willett XCF Rye Whiskey 7 years, 0.7L 51.7% Willett - A special whiskey from a special distillery! Several hundred euros are due if you want to buy one of the sought-after older bottlings of a Willett Rye Whiskey. Old bottles, such as the Willett Rye Whiskey 23 years, are very popular with collectors and speculators and are now only occasionally found at auctions. The hype surrounding these products is not unjustified, however, because anyone who has tried an older Willett at least once in their life knows about the extraordinary quality of these whiskeys. Nevertheless, you obviously don't want to spend half your monthly salary on a bottle of Rye, which is why you should also consider the current bottlings from Willett! A very special bottle that has only recently been on the market is the Willett XCF Rye Whiskey 7 years! Before we tell you more about this strictly limited bottle, we would like to take a quick look at the history of the distillery. The history of the Willett Distillery After the end of American Prohibition, the thirst for high-quality whiskeys was great. So it was definitely the right time when the brothers Thompson and John T. Willett opened the Willett distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky in 1936. The distillery was able to establish itself successfully with its products in the decades that followed, but slipped into a crisis in the 1970s when global demand for bourbon fell sharply. In the 1980s, Willett ultimately had to close due to weak sales. However, one man continued to believe in the success of the distillery - the successful entrepreneur Even Kulsveen, husband of Martha Willett. He therefore bought the shares in the Willett Distillery from the other family members. Through his company Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, he continued to produce whiskey according to Willett's recipe and to store and bottle it in Bardstown. In 2012, he finally had a new distillery built on the old site, which has since then produced high-quality bourbon and rye whiskey with a pot still and a column still. The Willett XCF Rye Whiskey 7 years The Willett XCF Rye is part of the new "Exploratory Cask Finish" series from the Willett Distillery and matured for a total of seven years in charred American white oak barrels. It was then allowed to mature for around 90 days in French Curacao barrels. These were most likely barrels of the popular orange liqueur Grand Marnier. The mash bill of this excellent whiskey consisted of 95% rye and 5% malted barley. It was finally bottled at a strong 51.7% vol. On the nose, the chestnut-colored whiskey shows intense notes of oak, strong caramel, orange and spices. On the palate, the Willett XCF is slightly sweet with aromas of orange and other citrus fruits. The aftertaste is characterized by a clear rye style and is of considerable length. Please note: only a few bottles in stock!
