The history of Old Pulteney

The Pulteney Distillery is located in Wick on the northern tip of Scotland and was founded in 1826 by James Henderson. The distillery is the northernmost on the Scottish mainland and is called simply Pulteney, while it calls its whisky Old Pulteney. The adjective is not intended to refer to the whisky's great age, but rather to the fact that it matures particularly quickly. For a long time, Old Pulteney whiskies were only available from independent bottlers. Since 1997, however, it has also been available in distillery bottlings and since around 2008 Old Pulteney has experienced a significant upswing and is very popular with enthusiasts. Because of its sherry flavor and its slightly salty and dry taste, Old Pulteney is often referred to as the "Manzanilla of the North."

The production of Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky 12 Years

The water used to produce Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky 12 Years comes from the nearby Loch of Yarrows and is relatively peaty. However, the malt for Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky 12 Years is not peated, which is why the whisky only has a subtle peat note. The distillery's six cast-iron fermentation tanks (wash backs) each hold 24,000 liters and are lined with stainless steel. After the mash has fermented, it is first distilled in a wash still and then in a 17,300 liter spirit still. The resulting alcohol vapors are passed through a T-shaped, slightly sloping pipe (lyne arm) into a stainless steel condenser (worm tub), which is rarely found in this form these days. After condensation, the fresh distillate is filled into barrels made of the best oak wood to mature in them for over 12 years.

The taste of the Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky 12 years

The golden-colored Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky 12 years clearly shows the maritime character on the nose, which is also promised by the manufacturer. On the palate, the Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky 12 years seems a little dry at first, but then shows wonderful aromas of roasted hazelnuts and a clearly floral character. The aftertaste of the Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky 12 years is a little sweeter than expected and impresses with fruity aromas of passion fruit and mango. Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky 12 years is definitely one of the best whiskies in its class!

Old Pulteney Stroma Malt Whisky Liqueur, 0,5 L, 35%
Old Pulteney Stroma Malt Whisky Liqueur, 0.5 L, 35% The history of the Pulteney distillery The delicate Stroma Malt Whisky Liqueur is distilled by the Scottish malt distillery Pulteney in the northern Highlands. More precisely in the village of Wick near the North Sea coast, making the Pulteney Distillery the northernmost on the Scottish mainland. The Pulteney distillery was built in 1826 by James Henderson and remained in family ownership until the 1920s. In the decades that followed, however, there were numerous changes of ownership and the distillery had to experience some ups and downs. Pulteney is currently operated by Inver House Distillers Ltd and, with an annual production volume of around 1,000,000 liters, is one of the smaller ones in Scotland. The whiskeys are distilled in just two stills. The Old Pulteney Stroma Malt Whisky Liqueur The Stroma Whisky Liqueur is the successor to the now sought-after Old Pulteney Liqueur, which was slightly lighter in terms of alcohol content than the current bottling. The name of the liqueur is based on the small island of Stroma, off the north coast of Scotland. The Stroma Malt Whisky Liqueur is intended to wash over the taste buds in the same way that the island is washed by the waves of the sea. The liqueur is produced using award-winning, strong malt whiskeys and lighter malt whiskeys. The different whiskeys are blended and then mixed with honey and various herbs and spices. The taste of the Old Pulteney Stroma Malt Whisky Liqueur In the glass, the whiskey liqueur shimmers in a dark gold and smells of fine whiskey, sherry, honey and spicy herbs. On the palate, the liqueur has a clear, but not too strong, sweetness and robust, full-bodied and fruity notes. The aftertaste is medium-length and intensely warming. The Pulteney Distillery recommends enjoying the Stroma liqueur neat or on the rocks. A view that we support, but we at Drinkology.de would also like to point out that it can be used well in whiskey cocktails.

Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky 16 Yo 0,7L 46%
Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky 16 years 0.7L 46% Old Pulteney Pulteney is the most northerly Scottish single malt whisky distillery on the Scottish mainland. The distillery, built in 1826, is located in the small village of Wick, which was once designed by Thomas Telford and Sir William Pulteney as the ideal fishing port. It was during this opening phase that the town experienced a real herring boom, which was of course perfect for James Henderson, the founder of the distillery, and the sale of his whisky. Shortly afterwards, however, the Wick town council had to impose an alcohol ban and turn the town into a 'dry town' in order to curb the amount of alcohol consumed. For a long time, whisky from the Pulteney distillery was only available through independent bottlers such as Gordon & MacPhail, which is of course different today. But even today you can find bottlings from Gordon & MacPhail as well as Cadenheads and Duncan Taylor. The distillery's core range includes a 12-, 15-, 18- and 25-year-old. In addition to these, there are also a few special bottlings with 'special' names, such as "Floatilla", "Duncansby Head" or "Noss Head". Old Pulteney 16 Year Old Malt Whisky For an even more intense and, above all, more complex taste, the Pulteney matures in two different types of barrels, followed by a blend of the two barrels. American bourbon barrels and Spanish sherry barrels are used for the maturation period. Notes of honey, vanilla and a pleasant aroma of smoky oak wood spread on the nose. Nevertheless, you have to give the 16-year-old some time in the glass to fully develop. But if you give it that time, every second of waiting will be worth it. The taste is initially a little reserved, then a more intense, sharper spiciness follows. Then, just like on the nose, vanilla, honey and oak.

Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky 18 Yo 0,7L 46%
Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky 18 years 0.7L 46% History of Old Pulteney The distillery was founded in 1826 by Mr. James Henderson. He chose the perfect location, right by the fishing port of Wick in the north of Scotland. It was common practice at the time, and one of the few transport routes, to ship whisky directly across the sea to all parts of the world. The distillery remained in family ownership for another 100 years, until it was finally sold to James Watson & Son in 1920, and later bought back by John Dewar & Son. The distillery did not remain in their possession for long, either, as DCL bought Old Pulteney in 1925, only to shut it down five years later. It took until after the Second World War, until 1951, for a lawyer named Cumming to buy the closed distillery. He already owned the Balblair Distillery. Today it belongs to Inver House Distillers. 18-year-old The 18-year-old edition of Old Pulteney offers a fruity bouquet. On the nose, it evokes memories of warm apple strudel, balanced with fine spices such as cinnamon, vanilla and raisins. Something chocolatey and a hint of oak join in and continue the aromatic journey on the palate. Something salty, reminiscent of a sea breeze, comes to the fore and continues with an aftertaste of roasted nuts and orange peel in a long finish. This whisky is to be enjoyed and not a run-of-the-mill product. It offers a fantastic combination of finesse, complexity and sophistication and presents itself with a deep amber color.

Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch Whisky Huddart 0,7L 46%
Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch Whisky Huddart 0.7L 46% Old Pulteney Distillery In the tranquil village of Wick, on the very northern tip of the Scottish mainland, you can find the Old Pulteney Distillery. It is a small fishing village and was considered the 'herring capital' of Europe in the 19th century. Where many workers came together and did hard work, alcohol was often not far away. So James Henderson founded the Old Pulteney Distillery in 1826 to quench the workers' thirst. The name of the distillery is also closely related to fishing: Henderson named his whisky after the then director of the fishing company, Sir William Johnstone Pullteney. Huddart Single Malt The new product from the Old Pulteney distillery is named after the street on which the production facility is located. It is a whisky with a strong character, with notes of honey, smoke and leather as well as fruity notes such as apple and sweet vanilla. It is ideal for whisky newbies who want to gain their first experience with a much smokier and slightly peaty whisky.
