Gin from the Black Forest

The history of Monkey 47 is a success story. The self-proclaimed Black Forest Dry Gin was introduced in May 2010 and quickly gained international renown. It can now be found in the best bars and restaurants in Spain and Great Britain.

The history of Monkey 47

No good product without a good story. This is also the case with Monkey 47. According to legend, the British Royal Air Force soldier Montgomery "Monty" Collins ended up in the Black Forest after a stay in Berlin. As the diplomat's son Montgomery spent his childhood in India, he had a great affinity for exotic flora and fauna. This also explains why he adopted a Java monkey from the Berlin Zoo before leaving Berlin.

After arriving in the Black Forest, he opened an inn there and named it "Zum wilden Affen" in reference to his adopted monkey. As a British gentleman, Montgomery naturally did not want to do without the most British of all drinks - gin - in his inn. For this reason, he developed a recipe with 47 botanicals. These herbs and spices were based on his own life story and so he combined traditional gin aromatics, such as juniper, with exotic botanicals from India and pure and original aromas from herbs native to the Black Forest.

In the 1960s, all trace of Montgomery was lost and with him the recipe for the gin. It was not until the turn of the millennium that an old box with the recipe was rediscovered in the attic of the inn. Alexander Stein, the managing director of the Blackforest distillery, quickly recognised the potential of the recipe and began making initial attempts to produce the gin according to the old recipe. He finally succeeded and so the Monkey 47 Black Forest Dry Gin saw the light of day again.

The taste of Monkey 47

All of the botanicals used in Monkey 47 are hand-picked and of exceptional quality. Particularly noteworthy is the use of fresh blueberries, which give the gin an incomparable aroma. After distillation, the gin matures for 100 days in ancient stoneware jugs, which allow oxygen to be exchanged with the environment through fine pores. This allows the aromas in the product to harmonise particularly well. Finally, the gin is reduced with extremely soft spring water to a drinking strength of 47% vol. This old-school gin has a wonderful bouquet of cranberries, spruce needles and cucumber and lime aromas. The aftertaste is characterized by fine floral nuances and remains in the memory for a long time. A great product!

Elephant London Dry Gin 0,5 L
Elephant London Dry Gin 0.5L 45% The history of Elephant London Dry Gin Gin from Germany has experienced a strong boom in recent years. Brands such as Monkey 47 Schwarzwald Dry Gin and The Duke Munich Dry Gin have convinced gin lovers and experts alike and laid the foundation for other brands. Since then, many products have flooded the market, most of which have not, however, been convincing. The situation is different with Elephant London Dry Gin. It has been produced in Germany since 2013 and is closely linked to the continent of Africa. The producers of Elephant London Dry Gin were not only inspired by the magic of Africa when it came to the ingredients, but also help to preserve the originality of the black continent. For every bottle of Elephant London Dry Gin sold, the manufacturer donates 15% to elephant conservation organizations in Africa, which, among other things, help to preserve the original routes of African elephants. The elaborately designed bottle, with its label in the form of an old African postage stamp, the natural cork and the hand-wound cord, conveys the flair of Africa from the time of discovery. The production of Elephant London Dry Gin The basis for the taste of Elephant London Dry Gin, which is produced near Hamburg, is of course juniper. The other 14 botanicals are rather unusual and mostly come from Africa. The probably least known botanicals are the fruit of the baobab (monkey bread tree), African smoked wormwood, devil's claw and buchu flowers. Components from Germany such as apple are also used, which are distilled in a copper pot still together with the neutral alcohol after maceration. Elephant London Dry Gin is produced in relatively small batches. These are not differentiated by numbers as is usually the case, but are named after elephants that are protected by the organizations. The name of the respective batch or elephant is noted on each bottle. The taste of the Elephant London Dry Gin Just like the botanicals, the taste of the Elephant London Dry Gin is also surprising. The first impression on the nose is floral and fruity and less dominated by juniper than expected. On the palate, the Elephant London Dry Gin then shows its full potential and convinces with notes of pine needles, cinnamon and the sour-fruity aromas of the baobab fruit, which are rather unknown to the German palate. Overall, the Elephant London Dry Gin has a very complex play of aromas, which can also be perceived for a long time in the aftertaste. The manufacturer recommends serving the Elephant London Dry Gin with a slice of apple, as this highlights the fruity notes of the Elephant London Dry Gin particularly well. We can only support this statement and recommend the Elephant London Dry Gin with a clear conscience!

Gin Mare 1,0L 42,7%
Gin Mare 1,0 L 42,7%
Gin Mare 1.0L 42.7% Gin Mare - an innovative gin Innovations in the gin segment are rarely successful these days. However, Gin Mare, produced in Spain, has already won over many gin lovers with its unusual taste. It is the first and only Mediterranean gin from Spain. The production of Gin Mare Gin Gin Mare is produced in a distillery in an old fishing village on the Costa Dourada. There, the finest neutral alcohol is extracted from the best wheat using the pot still process and then mixed with Mediterranean botanicals. It is these botanicals that make Gin Mare so special. Green Arbequina olives, basil from Italy, rosemary from Greece and thyme from Turkey are used for the maceration, among others. These aromas give Gin Mare a touch of the Mediterranean and a light, relaxed taste. After the production process is complete, the Gin Mare is bottled. However, no ordinary bottles are used, but specially made bottles from a designer collection. With its curved shape, this bottle combines blue and white light reflections that are intended to symbolize the connection between sky, sea, water and foam. This unique bottle design has already won awards and underlines the super premium gin quality of Gin Mare. The taste of Gin Mare Gin The bouquet of Gin Mare initially appears somewhat weak. However, this is deceptive, as one is simply used to more intense aromas from other gins. If you smell the Gin Mare a little longer, wonderfully interwoven aromas emerge that immediately remind you of the Mediterranean and vacation. On the palate, the aromas of the Gin Mare then become stronger and thyme, rosemary, juniper and olives can be clearly tasted. The aftertaste of the Gin Mare is surprisingly long and nuances of citrus peel and floral notes can be perceived. Gin Mare has already won numerous awards, including some very important ones such as an award at the One World Spirits Competition (International Competition in San Francisco). Although Gin Mare is wonderful in cocktails, it is also worth trying it neat with Mediterranean dishes!

Cape Fynbos Small Batch Gin 0,5L 45%
Cape Fynbos Small Batch Gin 0,5L 45%
Cape Fynbos Small Batch Gin 0.5L 45% The spirit of the Cape The restaurateur and master distiller Helmut Wilderer, who comes from Baden, emigrated to South Africa in 1994 to start his fruit brandies. There he was the first to receive a license to distill grappa and eau de vie and since then has received several awards every year for handmade pomace and fruit brandies. Creativity and quality are Wilderer's top priorities. So he naturally finds enough incentives in the Cape region, which is one of the world's largest fruit growing areas, to meet his demands. The brandies are triple distilled in a state-of-the-art facility with a capacity of over 700 liters. Produced in harmony with nature Wilderer sometimes uses unique wild herbs for his spirits that are completely unknown to us in Europe. These include, for example, 'Wild Dagga' (also called wild cannabis, THC free!), 'Buchu', a mint plant, 'Honeybush', and 'Devil's Claw'. The Cape Fynbos Gin contains a total of 33 botanicals from the Fynbos region, which is known worldwide as one of the most species-rich botanical regions. They are all grown sustainably and harvested by hand. Vineyards are usually found next to the Fynbos region, so it is only logical that the base alcohol of this gin is based on white grapes. In order to achieve a perfect bond between the aromas, the plants, herbs and spices are macerated before distillation. The taste A well-rounded taste in the mouth that fills you with pleasant warmth. Despite its alcohol content of 45% vol., the gin is still rather mild. You can taste deep, complex herbal aromas and a hint of orange zest. The mixture of the various herbs makes the Cape Fynbos Gin almost indescribable and you should just get an idea of these extraordinary aromas for yourself. The best way to enjoy this fine brandy is of course neat and on ice, but it can also be mixed well with a tonic or something else.

Nordes Atlantic Galician Gin 1 L 40%
Nordes Atlantic Galician Gin 1 L 40%
Nordes Atlantic Galician Gin 1.0L 40% Hype about juniper spirits The constantly increasing range of different gins seems to have no end. More and more spirits producers, primarily many small distilleries, seem to be riding the wave and are happy to deviate from the path of 'normal' gin production and create their very own gin world. This is how the producers of Nordés have managed to stand out from the crowd on the big market. Because instead of using an alcohol made from grain or molasses as a base, as is usual, they have conjured up a completely new gin from grapes. This convinces with a rather sweet, fruity aroma, which is of course still flavored with juniper in particular. 100% Galicia Nordés Atlantic Galician Gin is produced in Vedra, in Galicia, Spain. It is not just the location of production that contributes to a 100% Galician product, because the products used also all come from the Galicia region. And unlike most other types of gin, the base alcohol here is not a grain distillate, but wine from the regional white grape variety Albariño. This gin is distilled four times, with the final distillation taking place in one of the traditional copper stills, in which the 12 different botanicals of the Nordés Atlantic Galician Gin also melt with the base alcohol. The design of the bottle alone gives you hope for a fascinating gin. And that is exactly what it is. With a combination of botanicals such as eucalyptus, hibiscus, quinine, seaweed, broom, cardamom, liquorice and ginger, this gin has a very special note that leaves the typical juniper taste far in the background. This offers a very pleasant, fresh and very floral taste. A light spiciness accompanies the harmonious mixture of eucalyptus, sage, tea and spices together with juniper, which probably comes from the ginger used. Due to its surprising mildness, this gin is particularly convincing when drunk neat.

Monkey 47 Dry Gin Barrel Cut 0,5L 47%
Monkey 47 Dry Gin Barrel Cut 0,5L 47%
Monkey 47 Dry Gin Barrel Cut 0.5L 47% The German brand Monkey Gin from the Black Forest was one of the very first distilleries in Germany to produce gin. As the name suggests, the distillery's label features a monkey. Today, the Black Forest Gin is one of the most popular, and alongside the first product, Monkey Gin, the range is constantly being expanded to include new limited editions. The barrels selected for maturation come from the Palatinate. They are made from a long-forgotten wood, that of the mulberry tree. The company in the Palatinate still makes wooden barrels by hand to refine various distillates. After bottling, the first maturation phase begins. This is where the desired aromas are extracted from the wood. This is followed by the second maturation phase, which takes place in an old granary dating back to 1840. The constant climate with a consistent temperature that prevails there influences the taste even further. Barrel Cut Monkey Gin The new limited barrel-aged edition of Monkey Gin has its own multifaceted taste thanks to the choice of the particularly fragrant aroma of mulberry wood. These aromas are also clearly in the foreground on the palate. They combine with fine notes of roasted wood, a subtle, unobtrusive sweetness and subtle fruit notes.

Monkey Shoulder Smokey Monkey Blended Malt Whisky 0,7L 40%
Monkey Shoulder Smokey Monkey Blended Malt Whisky 0.7L 40% Who is behind Monkey Shoulder? Not many people have heard of this brand yet. But let us tell you that you most likely know the whisky brand behind Monkey Shoulder. The founder of the brand is none other than the well-known company William Grant & Sons! This is therefore a real Scottish whisky and brings together three of the greatest whisky producers under one roof. These three different distilleries and their different characters are also united in the Monkey Shoulder Blended Whisky. The first edition of this blend, the 'Mokey Shoulder', was released in 2005, but this bottling is the 'peated' version. 'Somkey' is absolutely the name of the game with this blend. All blends used are based on peated barley or peated whisky. This taste is more likely to attract connoisseurs than beginners. The smoky character is accompanied on the palate by fruity notes such as orange and a fine sweetness that can also convince beginners.
