Highland Park Single Malt Whisky 18 Years Viking Pride 0.7L 46% Highland Park History In 1798, the 'first version' of the Highland Park distillery was built and put into operation. The distillery owes its name to the nearby Highland Park spring, from which the water is still used to produce the whiskeys today. The distillery was initially operated by a priest named Magnus Eunson. He engaged in illegal distillation and then hid the whiskey in the vaults of his church. He deliberately tried to sell his goods on the main smuggling route to boost his business. Due to its very isolated camps from the rest of the country, it was difficult for authorities and tax collectors to get to Orkney at the time and so Orkney was one of the largest smuggling towns in the north of Scotland at that time. The authorities finally caught up with him in 1813, but he escaped punishment and negotiated a deal with his prosecutor. The prosecutor, John Robertson, agreed to release Eunson if he sold him the distillery and the associated farmland. In 1823 the distillery received an official distilling license and was expanded immediately afterwards. Over the years the company built up a good reputation and in the 1850s a limited selection of single malts, including Ballantines, Chivas and Dewars, were introduced into some of the largest whisky houses in Scotland. In 1895 James Grant bought the distillery. At the end of the 19th century the Highland Park distillery was bought by James Grant from the Glenlivet distillery. Under his management Highland Park was expanded and capacity doubled. 20 years of pure enjoyment You have been able to buy a bottle of Highland Park 18 year old for 20 years now. Since 2017 it has been available in a new design and with the nickname 'Viking Pride'. Viking Pride is mainly matured in sherry-seasoned European oak barrels. This gives the whisky aromas of dried fruit, dark chocolate and spicy tannins, which harmoniously round off the taste. Around 120 individual barrels are married in each batch to produce a top-quality whisky. On the nose, mainly dried fruit, smoky wood, gentle sherry notes and a little honey sweetness, which are also reflected in the taste.

Highland Park Single Malt Whisky 14 Years Loyalty of the Wolf 1.0L 42.3% The secret of the distillery The exceptional location and the harsh climate that prevails there ensure that each Highland Park becomes a special drop. Peat generally consists of plant parts that have decomposed over thousands of years, most of which come from trees. The type of vegetation in the north of Scotland, however, differs considerably from that of a normal peat bog. Due to the strong and cold winds that prevail there, only a few trees manage to survive there and so the peat here consists primarily of semi-decomposed heather plants. If the peat is dried and then burned, different aromas are created by the released phenols that depend on the compacted plant parts. Peat bog, for example, is smokier because it contains more organic compounds from trees, whereas Islay peat contains more marine plant parts and releases aromatic compounds that are reminiscent of tar. The Orkney peat, on the other hand, brings with it its very own aromatic image. As it consists mainly of peat moss and heather, there are only slightly smoky notes here, but these come across as much more aromatic. Viking Soul Loyalty of the Wolf shows a fine balance and a contrasting aroma, reflecting the character of the wolf. The Vikings always felt an immense attraction to the wolf, and so it always played a special role in their lives. The wolf is a loyal and cooperative member of a pack, but also a fearless and determined hunter. Man and animal are particularly close in one thing: Both are out to protect their families and their kingdom by any means necessary. Taste profile. The whisky matures in old sherry-seasoned oak barrels and ex-bourbon barrels, which give it its golden brown color. Here, courage, determination and solidarity are celebrated in one bottle. Loyalty of the Wolf is a rather sweet whisky, but it still does not lack a complex play of aromas. The connoisseur is offered a fine balance between peaty and fruity whisky. In addition to the peat aroma typical of Highland Park whiskies, the taste is characterized by vanilla and baked apple.

Highland Park Single Malt Whisky 16 Years Wings of the Eagle 0.7L 44.5% Highland Park Distillery The location of the Highland Park distillery gives the whiskey produced there a unique touch. Highland Park is the northernmost distillery in Scotland and is located between the capital of the Orkney island of Kirkwall and the small town of Holm. A special feature in the production of the whiskeys is the water used. This comes from a nearby spring that has very hard water. Soft water is usually used, which is the best for distilling. A second special factor is the peat from Orkney. Due to the harsh climate and strong storms, hardly any trees grow there. That is why Orkney peat consists mostly of compacted and decomposed heather plants. Wings of the Eagle The eagle that stands on the sacred tree Yggdrasil stands for wisdom and knowledge in Viking legends and the beating of its mighty wings creates the wind that sweeps over the earth. Orkney has exactly these powerful winds. In the winter months they reach top speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. Trees cannot survive these strong winds and that is why the moorland there is 'forestless', i.e. without trees. However, the soil there is particularly rich in heather. This represents the characteristic, aromatic peaty smokiness of the Highland Park whiskies. Wings of the Eagle also represents the wild climate that prevails on the island group. Nosing-Tasting-Finish The typical Highland Park taste of the smoky peat is of course not lost here either. It is a spicy whisky with a strong character and reveals a harmonious combination of aromas that are 'as complexly layered as the wings of an eagle'. Nose: The smoky aroma is definitely in the foreground here, but then you also notice slightly floral aromas. After a short time, the harmonious and complex smell of the 16-year-old Wings of the Eagle is completed with fruity notes of apricot, strawberry and orange. Palate: In the taste, the smoky aromas are somewhat milder but are then completed with the aroma of fruity, fresh apricot and figs as well as almond and marzipan. This taste combination is by no means intrusive, but rather mature, elegantly restrained. Woody and smoky notes linger for a while in the finish.

Highland Park Single Malt Whisky Triskelion Special Edition 0.7L 45.1% This special edition was bottled on the occasion of the event "100 years of shared whisky knowledge". It is a creation by the current whisky maker Gordon Motion and two former master distillers of the distillery. They are Max McFarlane and John Ramsay. It is a whisky blend from different barrels, that is to say: whisky from Spanish oak barrels first filled with sherry, American oak barrels first filled with sherry, first filled bourbon barrels and a small amount from refill barrels. The symbol that can be seen on the bottle label also has a special meaning, as always with Highland Park. It comes from Nordic/Viking symbolism and stands for wisdom and inspiration, thus fitting here with the distillery's many years of experience. More than 100 years of experience This centuries-long experience is clearly reflected in the tasting. In terms of taste, the Triselion reflects a full-bodied and complex aroma. This consists of notes of Seville oranges, raisins and apricots. The taste is rounded off with notes of crème brûlee refined with vanilla. Notes of honey and spices such as coriander, which is rather unusual for whisky, round off the taste profile. The peaty part known for Highland Park is not neglected here either. The character of this edition also reflects the diverse characters of the three whisky distillers; it is lively, expressive and soft at the same time.
