The rum that was produced at that time was not only for enjoyment, but also fulfilled an important medical function. The British Navy received barrels of high-proof rum to disinfect the drinking water on board. Since the water spoiled quickly on long sea voyages, it could be kept germ-free by adding rum. Each sailor therefore received a daily ration of 0.5 liters of rum. To supply this enormous quantity, up to 300 distilleries in Guyana provided supplies. But the excessive consumption of rum was by no means beneficial to the health of the sailors, which is why rum rations were gradually reduced and ultimately abolished when alternative methods of preserving water on long voyages were developed.

El Dorado Rum The Last Casks 2000/2022 Diamond Coffey Still aged in Uitvlugt Casks 0.7L 54.4% was distilled in the Diamond Coffey Still and matured for 22 years in former oak barrels used in the closed Uitvlugt Distillery. This rum is bottled at cask strength and presented without cold filtration in a warm amber tone. A sweet and spicy bouquet unfolds on the nose with notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, caramel, a hint of walnut and liquorice. On the palate, sweet vanilla, molasses and honey combine with a fine nuance of nutmeg. The finish is long-lasting and full-bodied.
