The rum produced at that time not only served the purpose of enjoyment, but also had an important medical function. The British Navy received barrels of high-proof rum to disinfect the drinking water on board. On long sea voyages, where water spoiled quickly, it was kept germ-free by adding rum. Each sailor therefore received a daily ration of 0.5 liters (!) of rum. To cope with this enormous amount, up to 300 distilleries in Guyana provided supplies. However, the excessive consumption of rum was by no means beneficial to the health of the sailors. For this reason, rum rations were gradually reduced and eventually eliminated when alternative methods of preserving water on long voyages were developed.

El Dorado Rum The Last Casks 1998/2022 Tri-Canada/Port Mourant/Enmore embodies the centuries-old tradition, craftsmanship and rich heritage of Demerara rum making. This unique El Dorado Rum consists of carefully selected rums distilled in the Port Mourant Double Wooden Pot Still, the Enmore Wooden Coffey Still and the now closed Tri-Canada Still. All components were distilled in 1998, then married and aged for 24 years in former bourbon barrels under the tropical climate of Guyana.

This limited edition El Dorado Rum The Last Casks is bottled at cask strength and presented without chill filtering in a warm amber tone. An earthy, smoky aroma unfolds on the nose with sweet notes of dried fruit, raisins, plums and a hint of spicy cinnamon, paired with subtle wood nuances. On the palate, the rum is dry, spicy and sweet at the same time, with aromas of dark chocolate, caramel, honey and orange peel. The finish is long-lasting and leaves a lasting impression.
