The Great Buffalo Trace

In ancient times, when millions of bison roamed the steppes of North America, they left behind huge trails that sometimes stretched hundreds of kilometers across the entire country. One of these trails led to the Kentucky River and was called "The Great Buffalo Trace."

The young man Hankock Lee once walked this trail and, together with a small group of settlers, founded what is now Frankfort (Kentucky) on the Kentucky River. The area was characterized by crystal-clear spring water and fertile farmland, and so Lee began growing corn and distilling bourbon whiskey.

New start for the whiskey industry after Prohibition

The quality of his spirits quickly spread throughout the country and Lee was able to invest in new techniques and built the distillery into one of the most modern in the entire country. When Prohibition was sealed in the United States in 1919, this meant the end for many distilleries, although the distillery founded by Lee, along with only three others, was allowed to continue producing neutral alcohol for medicinal purposes.

Moonshine and White Dog - unaged whiskey

With this history in mind, the distillery now known as Buffalo Trace produces this White Dog, which is intended to be reminiscent of the often illegally distilled, unaged whiskey that was available during Prohibition. White Dog, as the Americans call it, is nothing other than the new make or new spirit known from Scotland, i.e. unaged, freshly distilled whisky.

In contrast to the moonshiners during Prohibition, this whisky is of course 100% of the highest quality and its taste is incredibly complex and clear despite the clearly noticeable spiciness. Exciting!
