A "mayor" in the port wine trade

Mayor - Not exactly a word that one associates with good port wine. And yet one of the most famous port wine houses in the world, Burmester, owes its name to him. Burmester was founded in 1730 by Henry Burmester and John Nash as a grain trading company. Henry Burmester's family came from the Schleswig-Holstein town of Mölln and their name is derived from the spelling "Burgmeester" that was common at the time.

A few years after its founding, the company moved to the famous trading town of Vila Nova de Gaia. Vila Nova de Gaia was THE main trading point for port wine for several centuries. Until the 1980s, port wine even had to be shipped via Vila Nova de Gaia by law, which forced small port wine houses that had no property there to sell their goods to larger companies.

In 1750, Burmester finally began shipping port wine to the British Isles and the rest of Europe. Presumably in order to concentrate entirely on trading in high-quality port wine, Burmester & Nash was dissolved at the beginning of the 18th century and Henry Burmester and his two sons founded a pure port wine trading company: H. Burmester & Sons.

Burmester Tawny Port 10 years

Over the decades, Burmester has made a name for itself with one style of port wine in particular - Tawny Port. Tawny Port matures longer in barrels than Ruby Port and thus loses its bright red color. After a few years, it takes on a color called "Tawny", which is reminiscent of amber. Tawny is one of the most popular port wine styles and is often enjoyed as an aperitif.

The Burmester Tawny Port 10 years is one of the best known and most respected Tawny Ports on the market. It is made from grapes from old vines and carefully matures in small oak barrels. In the more than 250 years since the company was founded, Burmester has perfected the art of blending individual barrels and the Burmester Tawny Port 10 years is one of the best examples of this!

Williams & Humbert Sherry Lacave Oloroso 0,75L 18%
Williams & Humbert Sherry Lacave Oloroso 0.75L 18% Brandy or sherry? Basically, they are one and the same product. The small but very subtle difference that allows a brandy to be called sherry lies in its origin. If it is a sherry, it will always come from the province of Cadiz in Andalusia, specifically between the triangle of cities Jerez de la Frontera, Sanlucar de Barramenda and Puerto de Santa Maria. Only brandies produced here can officially bear this name. Another special feature of sherry is the grape variety used. Only three special varieties may be used for this: Palomino, Pedro Ximenez and Moscatel. Sherry Lacave Oloroso There is a crucial difference in the preparation of the Oloroso variant compared to, for example, the Fino variant. While the Fino has the so-called flor layer, a foam-like layer that forms during the fermentation process due to the added yeast and thus prevents contact with air, this is deliberately omitted from the strong Oloroso. The aim here is to allow oxidation with oxygen as much as possible in order to increase the formation of acid. Distinctive taste Sherry Lacave Oloroso surprisingly impresses with a finely balanced combination of softness and a youthful touch. The aroma is dominated by fruity dried fruit notes. A certain tartness comes from the walnuts. The two distinctive aromas are also retained in the taste, complemented by further fruity notes of apple. It is ideal for beginners, as the aftertaste is comparatively light and smooth and not too overwhelming.

Burmester LBV 2013 Port 0,375L 20%
Burmester LBV 2013 Port 0.375L 20% Burmester Port Wines The port wines of the Burmester brand are produced in the Douro Valley in Portugal with a lot of love and dedication. The grape varieties most commonly used to produce port wine are Touriga Nacional or Tinta Roriz, although very special, old grape varieties are also used for special bottlings. LBV (Late Bottled Vintage) 2013 In contrast to a classic 'vintage' bottling, which is usually only stored in barrels for a good 2 years and then matured in bottles, the maturation of the Late Bottled Vintage is handled somewhat differently. This port matures for 4-6 years in barrels before being bottled. This has the advantage that the port wine can be tasted directly in the year it is bottled and no further maturation in the barrels is required.

Burmester Extra Dry Wine Port 0,75L 19,5%
Burmester Extra Dry Wine Port 0.75L 19.5% Burmester Port wines from the Burmester brand are one of the most popular brands for the country's typical spirits throughout Portugal. The brand is mainly known for the so-called 'Twany Port'. The name goes back primarily to the color of the port wine, which is described as 'tan' or 'barrel-colored' in comparison to classic port wine. This is essentially due to the longer storage in wooden barrels. Extra Dry White Port Burmester Extra Dry White Port is made exclusively from white grapes and is blended after being stored for 3 years. In the glass it has a fresh citrus-straw color and exudes aromas of citrus and tropical fruits. The palate also reveals a fresh aroma with balanced acidity and a certain dryness. Fruity notes are reminiscent of melon and peach.

Burmester Tawny Port 0.75L 19.5% Burmester Port Wine Although the company 'Burmester' is now based in Portugal, the company's original roots go back to Germany, where the whole thing was based in the town of Mölln. When the company was sold, production was also relocated and so Burmester can now be found in Portugal. Port wine from Burmester is so popular that its barrels are now sold to rum or whisky producers for a variety of finishings. If you would like to enjoy a first-class port wine, we warmly recommend the Tawny Port wine. Burmester Tawny Port The classic Tawny Port is stored in oak barrels for a good four years, which gives the port wine its strong, reddish-brown color. The aroma is also influenced by this maturation and the Tawny Port wine has strong notes of roasted nuts, oak wood and a hint of orange.

Andresen Colheita Port Special Selection 1991/2021 0,5L 20%
Andresen Colheita Port Special Selection 1991/2021 0.5L 20% The port wine is named after the old port city of Porto in Portugal. Authentic port wine always comes from the surrounding picturesque Douro region, which has been growing wine for over 2000 years. The terraced slate slopes there characterize the landscape and provide the ideal breeding ground for the grapes. The JH Andresen winery in Porto is one of the few port wine producers that is 100% family-owned and thus maintains its independence. The small but fine family business was founded in 1845 and offers an impressive selection of old Colheita ports, some even dating back to the 19th century. Today, Carlos Flores dos Santos, the current owner of JH Andresen, continues the legacy of his predecessor with great respect. The careful production and maturation in large wooden barrels turns the precious port wines into true treasures. The grapes come from the Quinta das Aranhas, a vineyard near the Tua River, which offers optimal conditions for the production of premium ports. The special production method of the port, in which fermentation is stopped by adding brandy, gives the wine its natural sweetness and unique taste. A visit to the historic cellars of JH Andresen is a journey into the past and provides an insight into the traditional art of port wine production. The Andresen Colheita Port Special Selection 1991/2021 impresses with its golden brown color and unfolds a beguiling bouquet of dried figs and a delicate nutty note, surrounded by ripe fruit. Every nuance reveals a maximum of elegance and power, accompanied by an exceptional length on the tongue. Perfectly balanced, this port shows a fine, delicate acidity and a remarkable complexity that enchants every connoisseur.
