Old Pulteney

Pulteney is the most northerly Scottish single malt whisky distillery on the Scottish mainland. The distillery, built in 1826, is located in the small village of Wick, which was once designed by Thomas Telford and Sir William Pulteney as the ideal fishing port. It was during this opening phase that the town experienced a real herring boom, which was of course perfect for James Henderson, the founder of the distillery, and the sale of his whisky. Shortly afterwards, however, the Wick town council had to impose an alcohol ban and turn the town into a 'dry town' in order to curb the amount of alcohol consumed.
For a long time, whisky from the Pulteney distillery was only available through independent bottlers such as Gordon & MacPhail, which is of course different today. But even today you can find bottlings from Gordon & MacPhail as well as Cadenheads and Duncan Taylor.
The distillery's core range includes a 12-, 15-, 18- and 25-year-old. In addition to these, there are also a few special bottlings with 'special' names, such as "Floatilla", "Duncansby Head" or "Noss Head".

Old Pulteney 16 Year Old Malt Whisky

For an even more intense and, above all, more complex taste, the Pulteney matures in two different types of barrels, followed by a blend of the two barrels. American bourbon barrels and Spanish sherry barrels are used for the maturation period.
Notes of honey, vanilla and a pleasant aroma of smoky oak wood spread on the nose. Nevertheless, you have to give the 16-year-old some time in the glass to fully develop. But if you give it that time, every second of waiting will be worth it.
The taste is initially a little reserved, then a more intense, sharper spiciness follows. Then, just like on the nose, vanilla, honey and oak.

Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky 12 Years, 0,7 L, 40%
Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch Whisky 12 years 0.7L 40% The history of Old Pulteney The Pulteney Distillery is located in Wick on the northern tip of Scotland and was founded in 1826 by James Henderson. The distillery is the northernmost on the Scottish mainland and is called simply Pulteney, while it calls its whisky Old Pulteney. The adjective is not intended to refer to the whisky's great age, but rather to the fact that it matures particularly quickly. For a long time, Old Pulteney whiskies were only available from independent bottlers. Since 1997, however, it has also been available in distillery bottlings and since around 2008 Old Pulteney has experienced a significant upswing and is very popular with enthusiasts. Because of its sherry flavor and its slightly salty and dry taste, Old Pulteney is often referred to as the "Manzanilla of the North." The production of Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky 12 Years The water used to produce Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky 12 Years comes from the nearby Loch of Yarrows and is relatively peaty. However, the malt for Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky 12 Years is not peated, which is why the whisky only has a subtle peat note. The distillery's six cast-iron fermentation tanks (wash backs) each hold 24,000 liters and are lined with stainless steel. After the mash has fermented, it is first distilled in a wash still and then in a 17,300 liter spirit still. The resulting alcohol vapors are passed through a T-shaped, slightly sloping pipe (lyne arm) into a stainless steel condenser (worm tub), which is rarely found in this form these days. After condensation, the fresh distillate is filled into barrels made of the best oak wood to mature in them for over 12 years. The taste of the Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky 12 years The golden-colored Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky 12 years clearly shows the maritime character on the nose, which is also promised by the manufacturer. On the palate, the Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky 12 years seems a little dry at first, but then shows wonderful aromas of roasted hazelnuts and a clearly floral character. The aftertaste of the Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky 12 years is a little sweeter than expected and impresses with fruity aromas of passion fruit and mango. Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky 12 years is definitely one of the best whiskies in its class!

The Old Pulteney 1989 Vintage was released in September 2015 and caused a stir shortly afterwards. The distillate was stored for a total of 26 years in former bourbon barrels made of American white oak. At first glance, this does not seem to be particularly groundbreaking. What is special, however, is that before filling at the Pulteney distillery, an intensely smoky single malt whisky was also stored in the barrels, which gives the Old Pulteney 1989 Vintage a delicate, pleasantly sweet smokiness. Bottled with 46% alcohol by volume, with no added coloring and not chill-filtered, this single malt whisky develops an incredible complexity and sophistication that is rarely seen. Taste of the Old Pulteney 1989 Vintage: The Old Pulteney 1989 Vintage shimmers amber in the glass and offers an intense, fruity bouquet. Green apples, pears and citrus fruits are initially surrounded by warm wood smoke. Oriental herbs and spices also emerge, giving the Old Pulteney 1989 Vintage a wonderfully fresh impression. Vanilla, caramel and honey round off the exceptionally harmonious aroma in the background. The quality and outstanding composition of this single malt whisky is impressively demonstrated even before the first sip. The Old Pulteney 1989 Vintage is full and intense in taste. Dark fruits, spicy oak and gentle peat smoke are present. Becoming sweeter over time, butter biscuits, toffee and freshly baked sponge cake come to the fore. Hints of coconut, leather, coffee and tart orange marmalade round off the taste impression. The finish of the Old Pulteney 1989 Vintage seems almost endless. Peat smoke, tobacco and notes of citrus fruits form the finale and remain on the tongue for a long time. With the Old Pulteney 1989 Vintage, the connoisseur can expect a wonderfully balanced composition of distillery character, barrel aromas and elegant smokiness, perfectly balanced and extremely versatile. This makes the Old Pulteney 1989 Vintage a truly exceptional whisky.
