Iron Balls Gin is a very unusual gin from Thailand. Ashley Sutton, a native of Australia, is the founder of the gin brand. He grew up in a family of sailors and therefore describes himself as a kind of 'modern pirate' with a penchant for exclusive design. Sutton is actually known for a number of impressive bar designs in Asia, but in 2015 he was attracted by the idea of his own gin in Thailand. He chose Bangkok as the place where his gin was produced and wanted to capture the spirit of the Thai capital in it.
The base alcohol was already made differently than with classic gins. The base alcohol of the gin is distilled from pineapples and coconuts, which were previously fermented. This means that the base alcohol already has fruity, sweet notes. Then there are the secret botanicals, which macerate in alcohol for a few hours before the second distillation takes place. The mixture is then reduced with drinking water to a pleasant drinking strength of 40% vol. and bottled, which is another special feature of Iron Balls Gin. The distinctive bottle is reminiscent of a cannonball with a detonator.
On the bottom of the bottle, a skull is embossed into the glass, which also underlines the 'pirate fantasy', along with other skulls on the cork and the label.
