With the aim of producing a variety of particularly fresh and fruity gins using local products, the Clark family founded the Wessex Distillery in 2017. The family, especially Jonathan Clark, is no stranger to the gin world; he founded and ran the City of London Distillery until the Wessex Distillery was founded.
Alfred the Great Gin
The name of the gin, as well as the ingredients it contains, allude to the time of Alfred the Great, King of Wessex. Historical research was used to find out which herbs, spices and plants were grown in the capital at that time.
When tasting, it is clear that Wessex Alfred the Great is a very balanced and smooth gin. At first it is very close to nature, with juniper and earthy angelica notes. Pine juniper stands for Alfred's battles against the Vikings. This is accompanied by spicy notes of coriander and some fresh notes of lemon. This represents his appreciation of learning and scholarship as well as his close connection to Rome. And at the end, slightly floral aromas are recognizable, leading to a sophisticated, balanced finish.
