History and production of the Togouchi Premium Japanese Blended Whisky:

The Togouchi Premium Japanese Blended Whisky is produced by the Chugoku Jozo distillery near the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Originally known for rice wine (sake) and various liqueur variations, the distillery has now also added whisky to its portfolio. The whiskies released under the Togouchi brand all have an interesting background story. The whiskies are not produced in Japan but in Scotland and Canada and then blended together by the master blender of the Chugoku Jozo distillery to create a full, intense aroma and rich taste. The fine distillates are then stored in a disused railway tunnel high up in the Japanese mountains. This means that the temperature and humidity are constant all year round.

The Togouchi Premium Japanese Blended Whisky is the entry-level variant from Chugoku Jozo. It uses an 8-year-old single malt whisky from Scotland and a grain whisky of unknown age from Canada. After the two distillates have been blended according to the company's own ideas, they are stored for another five years in former sherry casks to further increase the complexity of the resulting whisky and to add fruity, sweet notes.

Tasting the Togouchi Premium Japanese Blended Whisky:

The straw-yellow Togouchi Premium Japanese Blended Whisky shows a combination of fruitiness, pleasant sweetness and subtle spiciness on the nose. Notes of honey, toffees, roasted nuts, candied oranges, lemon peel, grain and baked bread emerge. A delicate smoky note can also be detected in the background.

On the tongue, the Togouchi Premium Japanese Blended Whisky is extremely strong. It has a brisk start that leads to a full, characterful body. The taste buds signal notes of raisins, dried dates and figs, as well as sherry and roasted nuts again. A pleasant sweetness is achieved through hints of milk chocolate, malt and heather honey.

In the finish, the Togouchi Premium Japanese Blended Whisky is on the spicy side. It shows notes of oak, coffee and herbs, framed by the smokiness that was already apparent in the nosing.
