Jack Daniel's Whiskey is probably the best known whiskey in the world. Many people simply call Jack Daniel's Bourbon, although it is by no means one. According to the label, and the company is particularly proud of this, Jack Daniel's Whiskey is a Tennessee Sour Mash. This name was used to create a separate genre in 1941. However, one should not confuse the fact that it is the 'sour mash' production method that led to this name, but rather the origin of the state of Tennessee. Likewise a process in which the whisky slowly seeps over charcoal before it is filled into barrels (called charcoal mellowing, leaching or the Lincoln Country Process). This exact method was invented and used by Alfred Eaton in the place where the distillery was first located. The Single Barrel is bottled at (American) 100 proof, which means it has an alcohol content of a good 50% and is also a Bottled in Bond whisky. This in turn is a quality designation and means that it was bottled under customs supervision and must therefore have an alcohol content of at least 50% vol. The new Jack Daniel's reveals an excellent aroma of toasted wood, maple syrup and fruity, sweet bananas. There is also a hint of smoke, caramel and dark chocolate. At the end you can also smell nuts and nuances of spices. In the finish, the Jack Daniel's gains a little more expressiveness and is accompanied by warm, slightly sharper spices with notes of burnt wood. This 'Bottled in Bond' is intended to commemorate the year 1897. At that time, the US government passed the so-called 'Bottled-in-Bond Act'. In the 19th century, whisky was not usually bottled, which meant that many shop owners who wanted to sell it added additives or diluted the whisky after purchasing it from the distilleries in order to make more profit. Jack Daniels was one of the first companies to start bottling whisky in 1895. This was to ensure that no one could subsequently change anything in the whisky. The Botteld in Bond Act set certain requirements for the whisky to ensure its quality. One of these was, for example, bottling as 100 proof (for us that means 50% vol.) or the whisky could only come from one distillery in order to receive the quality award.
