History and production of Warninks Advocaat:

The history of Advocaat (some spellings also include Advokaat) begins in the 17th century. In 1624, Dutch colonialists conquered the Portuguese-founded settlement of Bahia in Brazil. There they discovered a creamy, unusual drink that was originally invented by the South American natives. They used the soft flesh of the avocados cultivated there to prepare a rich drink. The Portuguese mixed the viscous liquid with cane sugar and an early form of rum and enjoyed the exhilarating substance in large quantities.

Enthusiastic about the combination, the Dutch took not only the recipe but also a large number of avocado plants back to their homeland. Unfortunately, the avocado trees did not grow as planned and the dream of producing their own avocado drink was shattered. However, resourceful engineers soon invented a more than equivalent substitute. A mixture of egg yolk, sugar and brandy, stirred under heat, produced a similar consistency and a delicious, full-bodied taste. In reference to the original recipe, the new drink was called Advocaat.

Many years have passed since then, but Advocaat still plays a major role in Europe, and not just at Christmas or Easter. Today, production is regulated by the European Spirits Regulation. Each liter must contain at least 140 g of egg yolk and 150 g of sugar. The alcohol content must be at least 14% vol.

Warninks Advocaat is made by De Kuyper according to a traditional, well-kept family recipe and using the best eggs. It is rightly one of the most popular egg liqueurs in the world. With a total alcohol content of 17.2% vol., Warninks Advocaat also considerably exceeds European standards. The creamy, vanilla sweetness also contributes to its worldwide success.

Warninks Advocaat is a real treat on its own, but can also be a hit as a cocktail ingredient. Traditionally, it is mixed with cherry liqueur and then topped up with orange juice. This combination, which seems unusual at first glance, is extremely popular in the Netherlands.

Tasting the Warninks Advocaat:

Warninks Advocaat has a bright yellow color and a thick, creamy consistency. On the nose, it shows rich aromas of freshly beaten egg yolk, honey and vanilla, as well as butter biscuits and sponge cake.

On the tongue, Warninks Advocaat is very soft and mild. The entire mouth is moistened and leaves a pleasant sweetness. Once again, notes of pastries, egg yolk, vanilla and caramel are present.
