Savanna Distillery La Réunion
The distillery on the island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean has existed since 1870. In the years that followed, various owners ran the sugar factory and the associated distillery until the post-war period. There was one man in the history of the distillery who is probably most associated with the name Savanna: Émile Hugot (1904- 1993). After training as a chemist on the French mainland, he returned to the sugar factory and took care of the factory's energy supply. In 1932, however, he became managing director of the Adam de Villiers Sugar Company in La Mare in the west. After the Second World War, however, as everywhere else, the economic situation was initially very bad and he considered how he could counteract this. He took several of the local factories over to the Bourbon Sugar Company. These included La Mare, Savanna and Grand-Bois, as well as the properties of La Convenance and l'Eperon. Savanna, however, remained an independent distillery under this merger. In 1992, the distillery was relocated to another location on the island, further northeast to Bois-Rouge, near the sugar factory.

Traditionnel Single Cask 18 Years

This single cask bottling is made from Rhum 'Traditionnel'. Rhum Traditionnel is also often used in French to describe Rhum Industriel and, unlike Rum Agricole, which is made from sugar cane juice, is distilled from molasses. It matured for an impressive 18 years in a former cognac barrel and is also very limited to only around 800 bottles.
Due to the storage in the cognac barrel, the Savanna Traditionnel Single Cask 1999/2018 has a distinctive copper tone. The storage in the ex-cognac barrel is also noticeable in the aroma. A very multifaceted rum, on the palate it is very soft with spicy, woody notes and a pleasant sweetness that emanates from almonds, ripe bananas and other fruits. A hint of vanilla rounds off the taste.
