The name of the valley translates as "next to the woman" and comes from the mountain relief of the Guazapa Mountains nearby, which has the shape of a sleeping woman. This woman is a Mayan goddess who watches over the region and at night always looks for the brightest star in the sky, Xaman, the god of the North Star. It is said that she asks him for wisdom and prosperity for the inhabitants of the Cihuatán Valley. In response, Xaman is said to settle on a ceiba tree, the Mayan tree of life, to fulfill her wish.
