As payment and to boost morale, marines on board the Royal Navy were given a rum ration (called tot) every day at 12 noon sharp, which consisted of a total of 70 ml of rum with an alcohol content of 54.5% vol. Depending on military rank, the rum was handed out neat or diluted with water. The tradition of daily tots continued until July 31, 1970.
