The tradition of rum production on Antigua dates back to the early 19th century, when local farm owners used simple pot stills to produce relatively light and elegant rums for their own use. With the demise of private rum production in the early 20th century, rum traders began to create their own blends and sell them under catchy names such as Red Cock, House and Silver Leaf. In 1932, some of the most successful rum traders finally joined forces and founded the Antigua Distillery Company. After selling two different types of rum and an aged rum called "Caballero Rum" in the early days of the company, several sugar cane farms and a sugar factory were acquired in 1934 and the company began producing its own molasses and muscovado sugar.
