In the 18th century, the three colonies of Demerara, Essequibo and Berbice in Guyana were owned by the Dutch crown. After a slave revolt in 1763, however, their ownership changed hands between the French, Dutch and British. The British were the ones who built the first sugar cane plantations to produce spirits.
