Ardmore Single Malt Whisky Portwood Finish 12 Years 0.7L 46% History and production of the Ardmore Portwood 12 Years: The Ardmore Distillery is inextricably linked with a Scottish whisky blend called Teacher's Highland Cream. This goes back to William Teacher and his sons Adam and William Jr., who played a leading role in the whisky market in the mid-19th century. The family's blend quickly became very popular in Glasgow and the surrounding area. In order to meet the growing demand, Adam Teacher decided to set up his own distillery in 1898 and produce the "leading malt" for Teacher's Highland Cream there; the Ardmore Distillery was born. With an annual production volume of more than 5 million liters of whisky, the company has now become one of the highest-producing distilleries in Scotland. Even if the majority of its products are still blended, Ardmore can impress with a veritable selection of first-class single malt whiskies. In addition to the Ardmore Triple Wood and the Ardmore Legacy, whisky fans should pay particular attention to the newly released Ardmore Portwood 12 years. As Ardmore's whiskies are considered to be the smokiest in Speyside, it is no surprise that 100% "peated malt" - barley malt dried over peat smoke - is used for the Ardmore Portwood 12 years. The smoke content is a pleasant 12 ppm. Overall, the Ardmore Portwood is an impressive twelve years old. It was matured in two different types of barrels. First, it was stored in former bourbon barrels made of American white oak, before being intensively finished in port wine barrels made of European oak. Not chill-filtered and bottled with a strong 46% alcohol by volume, the Ardmore Portwood 12 years is an absolute must for fans of smoky single malt whiskies who still want to be pampered with a pleasant sweetness and great fruitiness. Tasting the Ardmore Portwood 12 years: The Ardmore Portwood 12 years has a deep, dark, golden-brown color with a reddish shimmer in the glass. The fruity, beguiling port wine note immediately comes to the fore on the nose, which, in addition to strawberries, cranberries, fully ripe red apples and orange peel, also has light hints of cinnamon, vanilla and honey. Compared to other single malts from the distillery, the Ardmore Portwood 12 years has a much more delicate, far more balanced smokiness, which clearly speaks for longer maturation. Over time, the phenolic aromas are gradually converted, thereby reducing the smoke. As a result, the Ardmore Portwood 12 years is wonderfully complex and highly aromatic, the smoky note is perfectly integrated and ensures that the fruity components are strengthened. On the tongue, the Ardmore Portwood 12 years also has a lasting impact. A strong, voluminous start with intense fruitiness, which is characterized by notes of juicy blood oranges, strawberries, blueberries and plums and is accompanied by a light, final peppery note. There are also notes of dark chocolate, port wine and oak. The finish is sweet and full-bodied, the light smokiness known from the aroma gradually comes to the fore and lingers on the tongue for a long time. To make it clear: the Ardmore Portwood 12 years is, without exaggeration, a masterpiece. This incredible combination of sweetness, fruitiness, spice and smoke is so harmonious and complex that it is difficult to name a comparable whisky. Unreservedly recommended.
