A look at the history of rum

The history of rum is as rich and fascinating as the spirit itself. First mentioned in documents in the 17th century, rum has its roots in the Caribbean and South America, where sugar cane plantations and the resulting molasses provided the perfect basis for rum production. It is even said that the first rum-like drinks came with the sailors from South Asia. There it was called arrack, a drink made from pure palm juice or sugar cane. But it is impossible to say for sure.

At the time, Caribbean rum was more commonly known as rum bullion, a product made from boiled sugar cane. Rum quickly became popular not only with plantation workers, but also with pirates and sailors, which led to its spread and popularity in Europe.

Over the years, different regions developed their own unique methods of rum production, resulting in a remarkable variety of rum styles. Today, rum is appreciated worldwide and produced in many countries, with each style offering its own characteristic flavors and production methods.

The production of rum had another purpose, however, because the high-proof "firewater" was used to sterilize the water supplies on board the British Navy. At that time, every sailor was entitled to a daily portion of 0.5 litres of rum per day (!) to make their drinking water germ-free. In this way, up to 300 distilleries in Guyana ensured sufficient supplies of rum. Due to the discoveries of Louis Pasteur and other scientists, the rum rations for the sailors were steadily reduced and finally abolished altogether. This also meant the demise of the rum industry in Guyana. Of the hundreds of distilleries that once existed, only one remains today, and this is also responsible for the El Dorado Rum 12 Years: Demerara Distillers! At that time, however, there was a law that prevented them from selling rum directly to the end consumer. So they had to find a way around this. It was Reginald Leon Seals who came up with the idea of founding a trading network in Bridgetown, and the RL Seale company was born. Today, the company is run by Richard Seals, the fifth generation. Empery 14 Years Rum The Barbados distillery presents a limited single blend with its Empery 14 YO Rum. It contains distillates that were distilled in both pot stills and column stills and matured in two different types of barrels, namely ex-bourbon and ex-sherry barrels, for a total of 14 years. In 2018, the different rums were then married and bottled at cask strength, again without coloring and without chill filtration. This has resulted in a complex rum that has spicy, fruity and subtly sweet notes. The aromas can be described as dried fruit, dark chocolate, roasted nuts and oak spice.

From 1964 onwards, the Domaine de Courcelles distillery produced exclusively molasses rum. His equipment went to the Sainte Marthe distillery, which was also owned by him. Excellent rum barrels were stored there until the Domaine de Courcelles distillery was finally closed. To crown the history of the Courcelles distillery, a special rum was once again produced. The Courcelles 1972 was produced in the same year it closed, but was then allowed to store in French oak barrels for almost 40 years and thus develop a rich bouquet, as it was only bottled in 2014. Many different aromas can be seen on the nose. Wood, plum, flambéed bananas and cinnamon, to name just a few. Other notes are added on the palate. These are primarily menthol notes and fine sweet, fruity aromas of strawberries and mangos. The finish of the vintage rum is extremely long and complex, as it has already proven before.

For Dos Maderas, rum from Barbados and Guyana is mixed. The first maturation phase of Dos Maderas rum takes place in the home country in a tropical climate. After this first phase, the rum is transported to Europe to be further processed by the company Bodegas William & Humbert. They are actually responsible for Spanish sherry and brandy and this is exactly what is used for the further resting period of the rum. It is now allowed to mature further in old sherry and brandy barrels. Sometimes there can even be a third decanting into a different type of barrel. With the Dos Maderas Seleccion Rum, as always, a very special gem from Bodegas William & Humbert is coming onto the market. For the Dos Maderas Rum Seleccion, a blend from the Dos Maderas collection is produced. The basis is the Dos Maderas 5+5 PX, from which certain barrels are selected. This is then married with various other blends of rum from Barbados and Guyana. In the Solera process, the rum is also allowed to mature for a decade in ex-bourbon barrels made of American white oak. The Ocean's Rum Atlantic Edition 1997 The Ocean's Rum Atlantic Edition 1997 is the flagship product from Ocean's Rum. It is the first rum in a series of three very limited special bottlings, with the other two rums - Ocean's Rum Pacific Edition and Ocean's Rum Indian Edition - not due to be released until 2015 and 2016 respectively. These special bottlings are named after the three great oceans, with each blend reflecting the character of the rum varieties produced there. The Atlantic bottling contains rums from Barbados, Belize, Guyana, Jamaica, Martinique and Trinidad. All high-quality Caribbean and South American rums! The storage time was between 16 and 21 years and 5432 liters of Ocean's Rum Atlantic Edition 1997 were bottled from a total of 16 barrels, each with 43% vol. The taste of Ocean's Rum Atlantic Edition 1997 This mahogany-colored rum is remarkably complex, full-bodied and balanced. Despite the relatively long storage time, the wood note does not dominate, but is wonderfully integrated into other aromas of nuts, bananas, spices and sweetness.
