Calvados - The best apple brandy from France and the USA
Calvados is a brandy from Normandy that is distilled from cider. More precisely, Calvados is an apple brandy. Calvados is divided into two categories: Calvados Controlée (Calvados with a legally regulated designation of origin) and the more famous Calvados du Pays d'Auge (Calvados with a controlled designation of origin). While young Calvados has a strong apple aroma, the taste of older Calvados is more reminiscent of a good cognac or brandy. However, in addition to the French, other nations also produce brandies from apples, which are then referred to as apple brandy. Calvados is traditionally enjoyed as a digestif, but it can also be used wonderfully in cocktails such as the Jack Rose, Applejack or Calvados Sour. Well-known Calvados and Apple Brandy brands are Daron, Dauphin, Château du Breuil, Papidoux and Laird's.
