Clark family

The founders of the Wessex distillery are members of the Clark family. Jonathan Clark, founder and responsible for production at the City of London Distillery for several years, founded the new distillery together with his family in 2017. Initially it was just a 'lifestyle distillery', but Jonathan aspired to more and saw the potential in the Wessex distillery to build a good reputation on the gin market.
Initially the distillery presented itself at regional markets, and in 2019 the first bottle of Wessex Gin was sold at the Surrey County Show and the story took its course. Many orders came in and the order situation already looked very good for the Christmas season, but there were still many discussions with potential customers, wine merchants and farm shops to be had.
Today, the Wessex distillery's range includes five products.

Wessex English Sloe Gin

For the Sloe Gin, only sloe berries are sourced from the English countryside. Together with sugar, a sweet mixture of berries and juice is created, which is then macerated for seven months. The spicy notes of the juniper, which forms the basis of the London Dry Gin, take a back seat and allow the fruity, sweet taste of the sloe berries to take precedence.

This type of gin is special; it is characterized by its dark red color, which comes from the use of sloes. Hernö Sloe Gin Bio is based on Hernö Gin and is refined with organic sloe berries and local honey. Hernö Gin matures for a total of three months together with the sloe berries, is then pressed and bottled in the distillery's characteristic bottles. A fruity taste that is somehow reminiscent of jam, but which harmonizes perfectly with the typical juniper notes and could not have been better balanced. Fruity and nutty aromas remind you of this special Sloegin from Sweden for quite a while.

Alfred the Great Gin The name of the gin, as well as the ingredients it contains, allude to the time of Alfred the Great, King of Wessex. Historical research was used to find out which herbs, spices and plants were grown in the capital at that time. When tasting, it is clear that Wessex Alfred the Great is a very balanced and smooth gin. At first it is very close to nature, with juniper and earthy angelica notes. Wessex Wyvern's Spiced Gin 0.7L 40.3% Roots in the Middle Ages The Wessex distillery has devoted itself entirely to the time when Wessex was founded. Much of it revolves around the time around 871 AD, when Alfred the Great was King of Wessex. They deal with the variety of aromas at that time and research the plant world of that time. What was primarily grown in the region and which botanicals were said to have which effects? All of this is knowledge from the Anglo-Saxon manuscript called the 'Herbarium'. Exotic Gin The Spiced Gin 'Wyvern' from the Wessex distillery is a thoroughly exotic representative of this category. It is based on the myths of the Arthurian legend of old England and is a completely new interpretation of a classic London Dry Gin. The bottle design has also been adapted for each individual gin. Here it shows the Wyvern, a two-legged dragon that symbolizes Wessex. The strong and full-bodied gin impresses with a balanced mixture of herbs that were added for 12 hours before distillation.

Wessex Saxon Garden Gin 0.7L 40.3% Special design Before the release of the new Wessex products, the distillery teamed up with a design company to design the bottle. Boundless Brand Design convinced them the most and together they created a bottle that stands out from all the others on the already overloaded gin shelves. The shape of the bottles is reminiscent of old apothecary bottles and each label is designed slightly differently. And another special feature of the Wessex Gin bottles is the bottle neck, which came from a reproduced silver penny coin from the time of Alfred the Great, who was the first King of Wessex in 871 AD. Delicate floral notes Wessex Saxon Garden is the perfect gin for long summer evenings. In addition to the main ingredient juniper, it was distilled from extracts of rose petals, hibiscus flowers and aromatic lavender. Wessex Sicilian Lemon and Ginger Gin 0.7L 40.3% For the British Wessex distillery, it is particularly important to use plants, flowers and herbs that reflect Wessex in medieval times. Wessex Wyverns Classic Gin 0.7L 47% Wessex Gin The Wessex Distillery was founded with the idea of passing on a piece of Wessex to the world. This took a lot of time and they experimented back and forth to find out which herbs, plants, fruits and berries were already present in medieval Wessex and how they could authentically convey this taste. A so-called 'herbarium', a collection of dried plants or plant parts that come from different centuries for special scientific purposes, was a great help. This enabled the employees to find out more quickly what was mainly grown in Wessex at that time. Wyvern's Classic Gin For the new Wyverns Classic Gin, the selected botanicals are macerated for over 12 hours to create a wonderfully balanced aroma. Distillation then takes place and a spicy, fiery gin is created. One speculates whether this is a nod to the non-fire-breathing dragons depicted on the label that once roamed through Wessex. But there are no limits to your imagination. Juniper is clearly the focus here, and liquorice notes are also noticeable and develop into sweet overtones reminiscent of delicate honey.
