The history of Wenneker

The history of the Dutch spirits and liqueur manufacturer Wenneker can be traced back to February 16, 1693. This makes the company even older than the world-famous liqueur manufacturer De Kuyper, which is also based in the Netherlands. At that time, Hendrick Steeman acquired the license to use two stills to produce brandy. Centuries later, more precisely in 1812, Joannes Wenneker bought the distillery and finally gave it its name. His great-grandson Franciscus Wenneker sold the distillery to Johannes Cornelis van der Tuijn. The Wenneker distillery is still owned by the van der Tuijn family today and is now run as a family business in the fourth generation. Under the leadership of the van der Tuijn family, Wenneker made a name for itself at home and abroad, particularly through the high quality of the genever distilled there. In addition to genever, Wenneker also produces numerous other products, such as liqueurs, syrups, whisky, rum, vodka and gin. Due to the introduction of numerous new and very well thought-out products, demand for Wenneker spirits and liqueurs is unbroken and the company is able to report increasing sales figures every year.

The Wenneker Genever Islay Cask Finish

The basis for the Wenneker Genever Islay Cask Finish is of course the finest genever, which is then matured in a barrel that formerly contained smoky whisky from the Scottish island of Islay. The starting product for the genever is the best grain, which is then flavored with juniper, among other things. After distillation, the genever is filled into regular oak barrels for a short time before being transferred to small hogshead barrels that previously contained Islay single malt Scotch whisky for eight years.

The taste of the Wenneker Genever Islay Cask Finish

Due to the strong and smoky aromas of the Islay whisky, the genever also takes on this unmistakable aroma. This creates a taste that is completely unexpected in the genever sector, the intensity of the smoky aroma varying slightly depending on the batch. This bottling of the Wenneker Genever Islay Cask Finish is a strong gold in color. On the nose and palate, in addition to the aromas of smoke and peat, nuances of hazelnuts and freshly cut grass can be perceived. The aftertaste shows aromas of citrus fruits and almonds. An intense taste experience that challenges even experienced connoisseurs and tasters.

Wenneker Elderflower Dry Gin, 0.7L 40% The history of Wenneker The Wenneker distillery is one of the oldest family-run companies in the Netherlands. The Wenneker distillery was founded in 1693. Now, over 320 years later, Wenneker is still considered one of the most innovative companies in the Dutch spirits industry. Initially operating as a brandy producer, Wenneker has steadily expanded its portfolio and has been able to establish itself firmly on the market, and not just in the genever segment. Wenneker's genevers, liqueurs and even whiskeys are now available in over 50 countries around the world and are enjoying ever-increasing popularity. The Wenneker Elderflower Dry Gin Genever is considered the original gin. The product from which today's gin ultimately emerged. It's no wonder, then, that Wenneker is not only an expert at producing genever, but also gin. The newest product in the well-known distillery's portfolio is Wenneker Elderflower Dry Gin. This special gin, which is based on a classic dry gin, is made from six different distillates. The individual distillates are each flavored with a different botanical. These are juniper berries, linden blossoms, lemons, oranges, coriander and of course the component that gives the gin its name - elderflowers. Together, the individual distillates create a wonderfully harmonious and intense gin. The nose of Wenneker Elderflower Dry Gin is very classic. Aromas of juniper, coriander and a light citrus note dominate. The fine, fruity smell of elderflowers can also be detected in the background. On the palate, the Wenneker Elderflower Dry Gin is very mouth-filling and the aromas of elderflowers clearly dominate. The aftertaste is surprisingly long for a gin and a wide range of nuances of citrus peel, juniper and coriander remain perceptible. An excellent gin that is ideal for modern cocktails. The price/performance ratio of the Wenneker Elderflower Dry Gin speaks for itself when you look at the sometimes horrendous prices of some competing products, which are also often bottled in 0.5 liter bottles. A lot of gin for little money.

About the history of the Wenneker distillery and Genever The Wenneker distillery was founded in 1693, making it one of the oldest family-run businesses in the Netherlands. While Wenneker was still producing brandy in the early years, the company specialized in the production of Genever in the decades and centuries that followed. The production of Genever, sometimes also written Jenever, has a long tradition in the Netherlands. The name of Genever is derived from the French ("genévrier" or "genièvre"), which means juniper. Juniper is probably the most important ingredient in Genever and is also primarily responsible for its taste. Originally developed for medicinal purposes, the Dutch increasingly developed a taste for Genever and it established itself as a kind of popular drink. The English also appreciated the taste of a good Genever and brought it back to their homeland. The word Genever was shortened to Gin, which was much easier for the British to pronounce, and the recipe was adapted. The gin as we know it today is a direct result of Genever, which also explains why Wenneker is an excellent gin maker alongside Genever. The Wenneker distillery has therefore recently started offering various gins that sensibly expand the traditional distillery's portfolio and reflect current trends in the spirits industry. The Wenneker Dry Gin The Wenneker Dry Gin is a very classic gin and is based on an old family recipe that is several centuries old. Unlike many other manufacturers, Wenneker does not use special botanicals or numerous cocktail recipes, but simply recommends enjoying the Wenneker Dry Gin neat or "on the rocks". A clear statement that the focus is solely on the quality of the gin and not on marketing slogans. On the nose and palate, the Wenneker Dry Gin has strong juniper notes and typical citrus aromas. A simple and ingenious gin that simply makes you want another glass. Clearly recommended!
