Corn Whiskey

When you think of American whiskey, bourbon whiskey and rye whiskey spring to mind. Corn whiskey, which makes up a considerable proportion of the whiskeys produced in the USA, is far too often overlooked.

Corn whiskey is a whiskey whose mash must contain at least 80% corn and which is distilled to a maximum of 80% ABV. In contrast to moonshine, which is also well known in this country thanks to a TV series, corn whiskey is subjected to a completely regular mashing process and of course must also be officially taxed.

In contrast to other American whiskeys, corn whiskey does not have to be stored in wooden barrels. If it is, then already used or uncharred barrels are used, which means it retains its light and fruity taste.

Although corn whiskey makes up a large part of the annual whiskey production in the USA, it is rarely sold as a regular bottling. This is because a large part of the corn whiskey production is used for American Blended Whiskey, a mixture of corn and bourbon whiskey, which is particularly popular in the USA.

The Platte Valley Corn Whiskey

The Platte Valley is one of the few corn whiskeys that is also sold as such. In contrast to the majority of production, the Platte Valley is stored in oak barrels for 30 months and can therefore be called straight corn whiskey - the prerequisite for this is at least 24 months of storage, which is significantly exceeded here. Furthermore, its mash consists of 100% corn, although only 80% is specified.

In terms of color, the Platte Valley Corn Whiskey is very light and somewhat reminiscent of white wine. The nose reveals slightly fruity aromas and a fine sweetness. The sweetness can also be clearly perceived on the palate, where the Platte Valley is slightly oily but not unpleasant. The aftertaste is characterized by fine peppery notes and is rather short. The Platte Valley is an exciting whiskey, especially if you want to discover new flavors, and thanks to the stone mug bottle, it is also a great gift for any whiskey lover!

Abasolo El Whisky de Mexico 0.7L 43% El Whisky De Mexico A whisky from Mexico is a rarity in the already broad whisky market, but should not be underestimated. The Destilería Abasolo is located on a property that was originally used to grow and dry corn. In order to keep the tradition of the property and the centuries-old Mexican tradition of growing corn alive, a corn whisky was created. For more than 200 years, a special type of corn, 'Cacahuazintle corn', has been grown by local farmers in Mexico and the knowledge about it has been passed down from generation to generation. Cacahuazintale corn is a white corn and has an extraordinary taste. The production of the whisky also draws on a tradition that is thousands of years old, the so-called 'nixtamalization', which has always been considered a classic preparation for corn and serves to prevent malnutrition. For this, alkaline substances (e.g. slaked lime or wood ash) are dissolved in water, the washed corn kernels are boiled in it and cooked for three to four hours. The whole thing is then taken off the heat and left to swell overnight. The taste of Abasolo whisky is very different from classic European whisky varieties. El Whisky de Mexico has notes of roasted corn, honey and vanilla as well as black tea and a hint of leather.
